After a shaky Round 6, things are looking back on track for the studio in the 7th round. Here's The Roundup....
3. Gears of WarThe Gears of War video game franchise has a rich, complicated backstory (often overly-complicated), and I felt that writer Mark Newton and director Zack Snyder did about as well as I can imagine. A movie like this was never going to be the next Saving Private Ryan, but I think they managed to make a fun sci-fi war film that handles its insane amounts of exposition without slowing things down too much. Zack Snyder was also probably the perfect choice as director as his style suits this (I wouldn't be surprised if his style had an impact on the video game creators).
2. Stepford
Stepford did a really good job of remaking a classic. It gave the fans of the original the scenes they would want, but it also manages to still feel fresh. That's not an easy task. The cast and crew were also uniformly strong choices for their jobs. While the season has been hit or miss critically, this one should have a good shot at some nominations.
1. Box Office
Nothing to complain about in terms of box office this round. Every film made a profit, and Gears of War ended up being a legitimate blockbuster.
3. Awards Races
Stepford should come into play here, but I would still say that most GRA categories are still relatively wide open. Right now it would appear that Wish You Were Here, Stepford and Risico should be the favorites based on critical reception, but things can still change a lot over the final three rounds of Season 20.
2. That Was Then, This Is Now
This film just felt a bit dry or lifeless to me. For the chaotic events that happen to the two leads, it all came across as far too milquetoast.
1. Tom Holland
Yes, Holland is having some decent luck at the box office as a lead, but I still don't buy him as a leading man - probably never will. He has a punchable face, making me check out of pretty much any film he is in.
