LRF Comic-Con (Season 21)

Welcome to the 4th Official Last Resort Films Comic-Con! This season, we have exclusive news and behind-the-scenes information on four upcoming LRF releases for Season 20....

Round 2 - Red Wolf
Early in Season 21, we will see a film based on a little-known Marvel character known as Red Wolf. The film based on the Native American hero is going for a realistic action film vibe rather than a traditional superhero film. "Nez Perce" scene-stealer Tatanka Means (Once Upon a River, "The Son") has already been announced as the title character with Billy Bob Thornton (Maple Leaf, Skin Tight) as the film's villain. Red Wolf is directed by Native American filmmaker Sterlin Harjo (Mekko, "Reservation Dogs") and adapted by writers Jimmy Ellis (The Grenade, The World: Done to Death) and Dwight Gallo (X-Men: The Cure, Cocaine Cowboys) in their first collaboration. Here is an early look at the complete poster for the soon-to-be-released film.

Round 5 - Wonder Woman
It has been oft-rumored that Wonder Woman could potentially make her way to LRF DC Comics Universe, and it looks like Season 21 will finally see it happen. Kathryn Bigelow (Mr. Big, October Crisis) has agreed to direct the film after signed a contract that would make her one of the highest paid female directors in Hollywood history (and certainly in LRF history). D.R. Cobb (Constantine: The Hellblazer, Spider-Man) penned the film, which will reportedly feature a more modern spin on the character. After a long and secretive search, the film has also cast its title character, with Alexandra Daddario (Urban Cowboy, The Creature: The Beginning) coming away with the role. She reportedly became the filmmakers' favored choice due to her genre flexibility and her resemblance to Lynda Carter, star of the 1970s "Wonder Woman" TV series.

Round 7 - Atlantis
There have been some rumblings on social media about LRF's DC Comics Universe taking the plunge down to Atlantis, but we can finally be sure now that the season is almost upon us. The upcoming film, Atlantis, will cover an Atlantean power struggle as young Arthur Curry and his half-brother come into adulthood. No cast or director have been officially announced by the studio, but we do now have word that film legend Steven Spielberg (Circumstances of Time, Hiroshima) will serve as a producer on the film.

Round 8 - Ghost Rider
As the studio's Marvel Universe continues expanding, it was only a matter of time until they got around to some of the more supernatural characters the comics have to offer. This season will see a film based around the Ghost Rider character. Aaron Paul (Outlaw Country, Life of a Champion Part 2) has been officially cast to play Danny Ketch, who becomes the supernaturally-powered "spirit of vengeance". No word on director yet, but the film has been written by LRF Marvel Universe regular Mark Newton (The Fantastic Four, Gears of War).

Round 10 - Supergirl
Chloe Grace Moretz (Superman: The Las Son of Krypton, Fear of the Dark) already briefly appeared as Kara Zor-El in Superman: The Last Son of Krypton, but now that Superman is away from Earth (minor spoiler for that film) she will be getting her own film. Here she is as the character in the first promotional art for the film. John Malone (Risico, Superman: The Last Son of Krypton) is returning as the writer of the film, which is reportedly looking for an A-List director to tackle his vision.

Season 20 Golden Reel Awards

Welcome to the Season 20 Golden Reel Awards, celebrating the best Last Resort Films releases of the studio's historic 20th season. Tonight there are 14 films vying for the 14 prestigious awards on the line this evening. The nominees are led by Wish You Were Here, with a record-setting 11 nominations on the night.

Before we get into the regular awards, we have a little special business to get into. During the season, the Last Resort Films Board of Directors asked the academy of writers for their nominations for the 4th Golden Reel of Achievement, a special award to recognize an individual talent's contribution to the growth, sustainability and success of the studio. This award is only given out every 5th season. The past winners of the award are Tom Cruise in Season 5, Mo Buck in Season 10 and John Malone and Chad Taylor who shared the award in Season 15.

The 4th Golden Reel of Achievement is hereby award to..... Christina Hendricks.

The star was nominated for her exemplary filmography with the studio dating all the way back to its first season. In addition to starring in one of the studio's first superhero franchises, The Question, she has managed to rack up 5 GRA trophies and 7 additional nominations. Here's to Christina Hendricks and all of her achievements!

AND NOW FOR THE AWARDS....

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Risico came into the ceremony with 9 nominations and it is off to a good start winning the night's first trophy. Wish You Were Here entered the evening with the most nominations (11), so it still has 10 chances to win some gold. This is the third Best Production Design win for a film written by John Malone and the second for a film directed by Christopher Nolan - they both worked on The Prisoner, which won in Season 3.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Sinatra becomes the second music-related biopic to win Best Soundtrack after becoming the 7th to garner a nomination. This is the 4th Best Soundtrack win for writer Lon Charles, giving him the all-time lead after passing Chad Taylor and Roy Horne (both have 3 wins in the category).

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Risico is off to a hot start, winning two out of two possible awards already. It has nominations in 7 more categories, including Best Picture. This marks the 3rd Most Wanted Sequel victory for writer John Malone, following Superman: The Man of Tomorrow and Namor the Sub-Mariner. Risico is also the first non-superhero film wot win the award since Mass Effect 3 - Part 1 back in Season 11.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Wish You Were Here finally wins one. The film entered the evening with the most nominations - setting a record with 11 - but had been shut out in its first couple categories. This Best Ensemble Cast win is the second in a row for writer Roy Horne who also wrote last season's winner, Cecil.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Boys of the Bayou picks up its first award of the night after being previously nominated for Best Soundtrack. The film still has 3 more nominations, including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Washington and Jackson, respectively.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

James Spader takes home the Best Villain trophy after a previous nomination back in Season 11 for Don't Hang Up. After going 0-for-3 in the first handful of categories, Stepford - which came into the ceremony tied with Risico for the second most nominations (9) - finally wins one. INFINITY officially struck out in its only nomination of the evening.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Risico continued racking up the awards, already winning its third of the evening. At 3-for-4, the film still has 5 more chances for more accolades, including Best Picture. The Justice League is done for the evening, failing to win in any of its 4 chances. This marks John Malone's whopping 6th win for Best
Adaptation, which is double of the writer with the second most wins in the category (Mo Buck with 3).

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Sinatra wins its second trophy of the night after previously winning Best Soundtrack. This is surprisingly writer Lon Charles' first win in the Best Original Story category, although he has been previously nominated 5 times. The night is officially over for Antarctica and writer Wyatt Allen, who found himself with a Best Original Story nominated with just his second film for the studio.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Wish You Were Here came into the ceremony with a record-setting 11 nominations, but this is just its 2nd win on the evening. It is nominated for all 5 remaining awards. This is the first nomination and the first win for Nathalie Emmanuel. All of the nominees in this category were first time nominees.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Brian Cox's performance garnered two nominations for The Grenade, so it is no surprise that he takes the trophy home tonight. It is his first nomination and first win. The ceremony is complete for The Grenade, going 1-for-2.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Margaret Qualley wins her first Golden Reel Award (she was previously nominated as part of the ensemble cast of Paradise Lost in Season 1), continuing the trend of first-time winners in the acting categories tonight. The ceremony is done for Observance, winning in one of its three nominated categories. Photographs' night is also done, unsurprisingly being shut out in its one surprise nomination. The loss here for Gugu Mbatha-Raw continues the surprisingly poor night for Wish You Were Here, now winning in just 2 out of 8 categories so far.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Idris Elba helps save the night for Wish You Were Here with a win in Best Actor. This marks the first time that Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated for Best Actor and failed to win, having previously gone 3-for-3 in the category.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Christopher Nolan wins the GRA for Best Director, making it his third win in the category out of three nominations (he previously won for The Prisoner and Caesar). He is now tied with Nicolas Winding Refn for the most Best Director awards. Risico will go into the final category of the evening with the most wins (4) on the night.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Risico takes home the final and biggest award of the night! It becomes the first action movie to win the award in the studio's 20 seasons. Risico ends the evening with the most wins of the season with 5. Risico becomes the 5th Best Picture win for a John Malone-penned film.

Congratulations to all of the winners! That's a wrap on the 20th (!) season in the world of Last Resort Films and Hollywood Movie Studio. The 5th LRF Comic-Con will be on October 31st (Halloween), while Season 21 itself will begin one week later on November 7th. In the meantime, stay tuned for a special GRA-edition of The Numbers on Monday.
