The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 20 Round 9)

Believe it or not, we only have one round and three more films left in Season 20. For the second to last time this season (not counting the awards edition), here's The Roundup....

3. If We Know the Right Way
While I did not care much about there characters in this (and honestly had trouble remembering who was who at a few spots), If We Know the Right Way is a well-plotted story. Meirad Tako's script is able to milk the tension and anticipation of what we all know will happen pretty well.

2. The Case Against 8
I have to give Alex Conn credit for avoiding most of the things that drive me crazy about so many of his films. While we still had scenes of people reading emails for some inexplicable reason, at least there was no social media and chain restaurant product placement or scenes of people watching some other Hollywood movie.

1. Y: The Last Man
I didn't like this one as much as the first one, but it was still a strong film. It has the same problems as other multi-part series, where none of the stories really feel complete (because they're not), but the filmmakers keep things fun with a good cast and a fun soundtrack.
3. Profits
Profits weren't great this round despite two out of the three films making money. This round actually has the lowest profits so far in the second half of this season (and with the new Justice League due out next round, it is likely to stay that way).

2. If We Know the Right Way
Like I said above, this story was well-plotted and told. It does however earn a place on the bottom three as well because the ending felt telegraphed early on and the characters weren't very likable.

1. The Case Against 8
The biggest flaw with this film is that the characters never actually feel like characters. This led to the film often feeling like more of a dramatic re-enactment of transcripts than an actual story with real characters. While it can be difficult to turn a documentary into a narrative feature, it's certainly possible. Look no further than Cocaine Cowboys, which is well-regarded for its lively, energetic characters. The Case Against 8 could have used some of that energy with its characters. Screw the facts, tell an interesting story with interesting characters.
