A Second Look: Alex + Ada

Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.

For this installment, I will be taking a look at Alex + Ada, which hailed from writer H.G. Hansen and director Ava DuVernay. Based on the comic series of the same name, the film told the story of a man played by Donald Glover and his life-like robot played by Sofia Boutella. The pair won the Best Starring Couple GRA, and is still the only film written by Hansen to win any of the acting awards. I recall giving the film a mostly positive review. I considered it the best film written by Hansen - granted I had disliked most of his prior films, so the competition in my mind wasn't particularly steep.

Looking at the film now, it is insufferably long. It is full of tangents and side-characters that have nothing to the with the plot. And speaking of the plot, it's hard to even spot amongst the ridiculous running time. The film meanders way too much. You could cut two hours out of this move (AT LEAST) and you wouldn't miss anything important to the overall plot (if you can dissect the film enough to recognize the plot in most scenes). I feel I was way too generous with my original review. Outside of the lead performances and the basic premise, there isn't much going on to like (or rather there is too much extra going on that it becomes too slow and unfocused).
