The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 20 Golden Reel Awards Edition)

This season's nominations were dominated by the four Best Picture nominees, but that doesn't mean we can't be in for some surprised. For this awards-centric edition of The Roundup, I will go through each category and tell you who I think should win the award, who I think actually will win the award, and who I think has no chance to win - followed by a brief thought on the category this season.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Who Should Win: Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Risico
No Chance: Observance

Thought(s): As much as I loved Observance, it's probably too simple in its story and design to take home this award. I think Wish You Were Here deserves to win here, but I'd put my money on Risico due to its popularity.

BEST SOUNDTRACK

Who Should Win: Y: The Last Man - Part 2
Who Will Win: Sinatra
No Chance: Wish You Were Here

Thought(s): Y: The Last Man - Part 2 had an awesome soundtrack filled with 70s and 80s rock songs. The fun quotient alone earns it my vote. That said, music biopics have a strong track record in this category, so don't be surprised to see Sinatra take this one home.

MOST WANTED SEQUEL
Who Should Win: Risico
Who Will Win: Risico
No Chance: Everyone Else

Thought(s): How could anyone not want to see the next Bond adventure from writer John Malone and star Dan Stevens?

BEST ENSEMBLE CAST

Who Should Win: Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Sinatra
No Chance: Justice League Unlimited

Thought(s): I think Sinatra will probably win for its cast of famous names and it is fresh on the memories of audiences, but Wish You Were Here should win this one since it is entirely dependent on its ensemble whereas Sinatra is more of a star vehicle.

BEST STARRING COUPLE
Who Should Win: Idris Elba & Gugu Mbatha-Raw - Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Samuel L. Jackson & Denzel Washington - Boys of the Bayou
No Chance: Brian Cox & Roman Griffin-Davis - The Grenade

Thought(s): This category might be one of the toughest to get a read on. I'd put my money on Jackson and Washington winning due to the film relying entirely on their dynamic. I'd like to see Elba and Mbatha-Raw win though for how good their performances were.

BEST VILLAIN
Who Should Win: Tom Ellis - Risico
Who Will Win: James Spader - Stepford
No Chance: Anne Hathaway - INFINITY

Thought(s): As the first Bond villain in the Stevens/Malone Bond era, I'd like to see Ellis win. He was a good match for Bond as a fellow MI6 agent. Spader was pretty great in Stepford, and since I see that film missing out in most categories I will not be surprised to see an award for the film here. Hathaway has no chance though. INFINITY will be remembered for its ridiculousness, not her over-the-top performance.

BEST ADAPTATION
Who Should Win: Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Risico
No Chance: Justice League Unlimited

Thought(s): JLU doesn't have a chance in my mind, and Stepford probably won't win because of its experimental writing process. That leaves WYWH and Risico for me. People really loved Risico, so it will probably win, but WYWH is probably my favorite film of the season.

BEST ORIGINAL STORY
Who Should Win: Observance
Who Will Win: Sinatra
No Chance: Boys of the Bayou and Antarctica

Thought(s):People eat up the grand, ambitious biopics like Sinatra, so I'd bet on it to win. That said, I really appreciated that Observance did something unique and didn't require on any time-tested formulas to be compelling.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Nathalie Emmanuel - Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Nathalie Emmanuel - Wish You Were Here
No Chance: Gemma Arterton - Sinatra

Thought(s): I'd bet my life savings on Emmanuel taking this award home. She has to run the gamut of emotions in Wish You Were Here in what could be a star-making performance.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Who Should Win: Wyatt Russell - Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Brian Cox - The Grenade
No Chance: Richard E. Grant - Risico

Thought(s): This category isn't quite as impressive this season as it normally is. I don't think Grant had enough screen time to win, even though he was great as dryer version of M in Risico. My money's on Brian Cox. The Grenade simply would not have worked without how good his performance is and it was singled out by critics and audiences alike. That said, I'd like to see Wyatt Russell win. He showed sides of his talents that he hasn't been able to show before.

BEST ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Margaret Qualley - Observance
Who Will Win: Margaret Qualley - Observance
No Chance: Emma Roberts - Photographs

Thought(s): Much like she did in Season 11 for The Stand, Emma Roberts wound up with a nomination due to a very weak category in the season. Qualley was left on an island in Observance and she nailed it. She deserves it.

BEST ACTOR
Who Should Win: Idris Elba - Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Leonardo DiCaprio - Sinatra
No Chance: Denzel Washington - Boys of the Bayou

Thought(s): Denzel has no shot here, no matter how big a star he is. I think you'd have to crazy to bet against Leo for Best Actor, even if I don't think he necessarily deserves it this time around. Elba gave the best performance of the season, so I want him to win (probably won't happen though).

BEST DIRECTOR
Who Should Win: Christopher Nolan - Risico
Who Will Win: Martin Scorsese - Sinatra
No Chance: Yorgos Lanthimos - Stepford

Thought(s): Nolan helped Malone and Stevens reinvent Bond for a new audience, so I think it would be good for him to win here. Stepford doesn't appear to have a ton of buzz despite all its nominations, so think Lanthimos will be sitting this one out. Given his age and lack of work for the studio, this may Scorsese's only chance to win the Best Director Award, so I can see the voters giving him this one.

BEST PICTURE
Who Should Win: Wish You Were Here
Who Will Win: Risico
No Chance: Stepford

Thought(s): Like I said with my previous thought, Stepford just doesn't have the buzz here. I think the voters will send a message here that genre films can win this award and give it to Risico.
