Plot: In 2012 A 19 year old is in a for profit at John University a for profit art school. She is studying game design and animation. She is bored and smoking pot and drinking constantly in her dorm. Her name is Jaimie (Saoirse Ronan).
One day Jaimie is going to class one of her friends Tara (Beanie Feldstein) talks to her about this YouTuber named Tom (Alex Wolff) that has only 1 thousand followers but according to Tara is really cool. After class she is in her Snuggie on her computer watching his YouTube channel and laughing and finds him on Facebook and friends him. Tom Skypes her and plays her the song he wrote for her. Tara swoons and thinks it’s so cute. They then talk basically everyday and Tom writes her poems and in term Jamie starts writing some herself but she is afraid to show them to Tom. Tom also reveals that he is making a movie it’s called The Guitar Player and it’s starring him. Jaimie asks if she can be in it but he says he’s shooting in Brooklyn. Jaimie reveals to Tom on a Skype call saying that her mom has Huntington’s Disease and that she may have Huntington’s disease and she is afraid to get tested.
Jaimie is at her game design class and she gets a text from him and it’s a picture of him shooting the movie with a small crew. It is the last class of the year and everyone is going on summer break and she goes to stay with her dad (Jamey Sheridan) in his two floor apartment in Kansas City. She is going to bed one night and her father and his friend George are smoking crystal meth and she hides under her pillow to make sure she doesn’t get second hand smoke.
She texts Tom and he asks whether he’s done with the film yet and he’s editing it and she’s excited to see it and he promises to send it to her soon. She is about to get tested for Huntington’s disease but she gets scared and doesn’t do it. Jaimie goes to text Tom and Tom says she won’t talk to her anymore if she doesn’t get tested.
Jaimie gets tested for Huntington’s disease and she waits patiently for the results and she gets it and she moves to New York with Tom and Tom and Jaimie makeout passionately when she gets off the airplane. They go back to his apartment and they talk about movies and they talk about life. Jaimie gets a job at the local movie theater. Jaimie and Tom go to a vegan dinner.
5 years later...
Jaimie is doing camera operation on a web series they are doing called Making out with Tom Johnson. The film then cuts to Jaimie saying fuck you to her dad who wants her back in Kansas City on the phone.
Jaimie is living with Tom. Tom is in his most creative time in his life. He is on his computer on Final Draft writing his next movie and she is writing her 2nd poetry book. Jaimie comes up with an idea for a screenplay but is scared to tell Tom. She starts writing it and it’s about a relationship. Tom is going on Backstage and finding actors for his movie. At the same time Andrew (Ellar Coltrane), an aspiring poet moves into the same apartment building.
Jaimie falls in love with Andrew she has dreamy eyes all the time. She fantasizes about kissing and having sex with him. Andrew and Tom talk about Andrew doing the camera operating for Toms film that he is working on. Jaimie has googly eyes when she sees this. Jaimie secretly asks Andrew for his number. Jaimie and Andrew text all night like she did with Tom and they do phone sex like Jaimie and Tom used to do.
Jaimie and Tom are having dinner and are going to the movies and they have a nice dinner and they have sex that night. Jaimie and Tom have breakfast and they are talking about the movie they are going to be making and Tom discussing this nice Airbnb they are going to be renting this weekend to shoot the film. Andrew and Jaimie talk on the phone and Jaimie tries to explain to Andrew what Jaimie finds so interesting about Tom and she recounts how they fell in love and how Tara showed Jaimie the videos of Tom. Tom wakes up and decides that Andrew and Jaimie should play the two lovers which they accept.
The film then cuts to the shooting days and everybody is staying at the Airbnb. Everyone does their scenes for the day and they go to sleep but Andrew and Jaimie who are awake and text each other and they have sex and they try to do it quietly but Tom still sees them. Tom yells at Andrew and asks Jaimie to see him alone and she does. Tom yells and says wasn’t I not enough and she apologizes and he accepts. There is a montage of the shoot and Tom and Jaimie eventually go back to Toms apartment and it is awkward for the first few days after. Jaimie tries to call her father but he doesn’t pick up. The film ends with Tom and Jaimie making out with Under Your Spell by Desire playing again then the film cuts to black.
