Reaction: It's always nice to start off a season with a solid hit - especially when the film is not of the blockbuster variety.

"The Big One is a very intriguing mix of its obvious influences, using them in ways that still allows this film to keep some originality (for the most part). The cast is stacked with strong performances. There isn't a single performance that feels weak or out-of-place."- Robert Avery, San Jose Mercury

"Paul Thomas Anderson feels like the natural choice to lead this breezy amalgamation of The Truman Show, The Village, and Pleasantville. While the supporting cast boasts big names in Murray, Norton, and Adams, this is the Sadie Sink show and she delivers with a worthy follow-up from her GRA-nominated performance in Tumor."- Gregory Fletcher, Los Angeles Times-Journal

"The Big is an obvious hybrid of The Village and Pleasantville. Even though it is too obvious at times with these influences, the story still completely works. Sadie Sink delivers yet another strong performance that has her knocking on the door to join other young LRF stars like Elle Fanning, Sydney Sweeney and Mackenzie Foy. She may not be up there yet, but a few more films like this and she could be. Sink's not the only one giving a great performance, as she is joined by Bill Murray giving what is probably his best LRF performance to date."- Charlie Sage, HBC-TV

The Big One
Genre: Drama/Mystery
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Cast: Sadie Sink, Amy Adams, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Fred Hechinger, H. Jon Benjamin, Bella Heathcote, Jake Lacy

Plot: Judy Everett (Sadie Sink) sits in her 1950s civics classroom as her teacher, Mr. Worley (H. Jon Benjamin), describes the recent fall of fascism in Europe. Judy is drawing doodles on her notebook of her crush, Robby Canton (Fred Hechinger), who is sitting in the row in front of her. Judy is passed a note by her best friend, Marcia Mansfield (Daisy Edgar-Jones), trying to goad her into talking to Robby. Suddenly a deafeningly loud siren blares. All of the students in the class uniformly ducks under their desks and cover their heads. After a moment, Mr. Worley announces that everyone can get back up as it was only a drill. Judy raises her hand and asks Mr. Worley if he really thinks that their small town could be hit by one of Russia's nuclear missiles. Mr. Worley ponders the question before warning the class to never underestimate enemies of freedom. The school bell then rings, marking the end of the school day. As they walk down the hall and out of the building, Judy chastises Marcia for passing her notes about Robby during class as Mr. Worley - or even worse, Robby - could easily intercept the note.

Judy and Marcia get on their bikes and begin riding home, they reach an intersection with Marcia turning left and Judy turning right. Judy arrives home and takes her bike around the back placing it in the garage. She walks in through the back door, immediately met by her mother, Carol Everett (Amy Adams) baking cookies. Judy tries to grab one but Carol slaps her hand telling her to wait. She instead grabs an apple from the kitchen bench. Her father, David Everett (Edward Norton) sits at the table reading the newspaper, as Judy walks past she gives him a kiss on the cheek. He reminds her that her grandfather is expecting her this afternoon. Judy complains that she was with him last night, however David tells her that she might not have long left with him, she should make the most of it. Judy goes into her room and turns on the radio lays on her bed and moves her head and taps her feet to the music.

The music blends in with Wallace Everett (Bill Murray) dancing with Donna Anderson (Bella Heathcote). As the song finishes Wallace thanks her, he adds that he loves these daily dancing sessions, it makes him feel young again. She smiles and leaves the office. A beat after she leaves Judy enters asking if he enjoyed his daily dance. He laughs at his granddaughter saying it was the best part of his day. And now her visit is number one. The camera showcases newspapers on the wall showcasing that Wallace has been Mayor for the past 30 years, they just can’t seem to get rid of him. Judy asks him what he wants to do today. Wallace says he wants to beat her in a game of chess again. Judy jokes around with her grandfather saying that his win last time was a fluke. The two of them sit down and begin to play chess.

Back at home in her room, Judy is getting ready to go out to the diner with Marcia. She listens to music on the radio while she dances. She grabs some clothes out of the closet. Suddenly the radio transmission is interrupted with a distressed voice. A call of mayday is heard. Judy gets closer to the radio, the mayday call can be heard repeatedly. The mayday call then cuts out as the music turns back on. Moments after Judy hears a thunderous crash, she runs over to her window and looks out seeing a plume of smoke in the distance. She forgets about getting ready and runs out of the house. Carol and David look at each other with a sense of panic.

Judy rides her bike to the diner and rushes inside. Everyone is going about their day. She goes over to Marcia, who greets her like normal. Judy is freaking out, she asks if Marcia heard the crash too. Marcia has no idea what she is talking about. Feeling like she is going crazy, Judy stands up on the counter and yells to everyone asking if anyone heard the crash. They all look at her obliviously, Marcia pulls her down from the counter and takes her outside, she asks if everything is okay. Judy says that she heard a loud crash and saw smoke near the edge of town. The two ride their bikes toward where Judy saw the smoke, but are stopped down the road by Fairfield Police Deputy Kevin Reddick (Jake Lacy), who tells them that he can't let anyone down the road. Judy asks why, and Kevin admits that he doesn't really know why but that he needs to follow the orders given to him by the Sheriff and the Mayor.

When Judy gets back home, her parents are both waiting for her in the living room. She asks them if they heard the crash earlier. David tells Judy that he did hear a crash, he even went to help her grandfather check everything out. Carol then tells Judy that her grandfather has called a town meeting to explain everything to everyone in town. The Everett family walks down the street to Fairfield Town Hall where Wallace is about to address everyone. Wallace calls for everyone's attention and everyone quickly quiets down. Judy is anxious to find out what happened. Wallace explains that earlier that day some people in Fairfield may have heard a loud crash and seen a plume of smoke. He assures everyone that there is nothing to worry about - it was simply an errant weather balloon that crashed down. Wallace then informs everyone that the crash has already been cleaned up and taken care of.

The next morning in school, Judy whispers to Marcia during civics class that she doesn't believe the story her grandfather told the town. Marcia asks why, and Judy confesses that she heard some sort of distress call over the radio right before she heard the crash. Marcia says that she must have picked up a radio play or something since weather balloons don't have pilots. Mr. Worley tells everyone to quiet down so that he may begin class. Suddenly the town siren blares, and everyone gets under their desks for yet another duck and cover drill.

Outside of school, just as Judy and Marcia are about to ride off, they are approached by Robby. He admits that he was eavesdropping on their conversation in class. He is intrigued by what Judy was saying. He says he wants to hear more. Judy looks to them telling her she will show him instead. Marcia tells her that there is no use going back there Deputy Reddick will just be there to stop them again. She tells Marcia that they will find a way.

The three of them get to the crash site again. Deputy Reddick is still hanging around kicking a rock on the ground. The three of them easily sneak around him to get a better look. They see David and Wallace standing around talking as they watch some workers throwing pieces of scrap metal into the back of a truck. Judy looks to the others saying that something isn’t right, it all seems suspicious. Robby seems interested, however Marcia doesn’t and suggests that the three of them head out to the diner for milkshakes. Robby then looks to Judy saying he could really go for a milkshake.

While at the diner Robby continues to ask questions about what Judy heard on the radio, admitting that he is a bit of an electronics aficionado. Judy asks him if he could increase the signal strength on a radio. He says he could theoretically. Judy announces that she has an idea and asks Robby and Marcia to come to her house. Robby is excited, but Marcia is less enthused but begrudgingly tags along.

They arrive at Judy’s house where Carol is sewing in the living room. She quickly stands and asks the kids if they want cookies and milk. Judy says no and leads her friends up to her bedroom. She shows Robby her radio and he begins taking it apart. He asks her for a clothes hanger, which she quickly supplies. Robby affixes the hanger onto the radio’s antenna and begins turning the radio’s dial until they begin to hear a low music signal featuring a loud, aggressive guitar sound none of them have ever heard before. After several seconds of trying to understand the almost otherworldly music, the radio loses the signal and returns to the sounds of static. The three of them look at each other, asking what that was. Judy says she doesn’t know, but she intends to find out.

Judy waits at home for her father to return. When he does she asks how work went. He is confused as she never really cares. He tells her it was a great day. She then asks what he does again. Once more he is confused, she knows what he does. Slightly taken aback, David reminds Judy that he is in charge of the Fairfield sanitation department. Carol chimes in, telling Judy that David oversees the overall cleanliness of the town. Judy then reveals that she saw him on the edge of town looking over the clean-up of the crash. She also adds that what they were cleaning up looked nothing like a weather balloon. All she wants to know is what is really going on. David and Carol look at each other. David suggests they all go and have a talk with her grandfather.

Donna cheerfully greets the family and escorts David, Carol and Judy into Wallace’s office at Town Hall. She inquires if they want any iced tea, but Wallace tells her that they need some privacy for “that talk”. Donna nods and leaves the office. Wallace then explains that he concocted the idea of Fairfield back in the 1970's when he lived in New York City, which was rampant with drugs, crime and violence and proved to be an unfit place to raise a family. Together with his late wife, they longed for the era they had grown up in, so they decided to create a place where that era would never end. David reveals to his daughter that he too discovered his father's ruse when he was around her age, but chose to stay and raise a family in Fairfield with Carol rather than subject them to the risks and dangers of the outside world. Carol puts her hand on her daughter's shoulder and tells her that now that she knows the truth, she has to make a decision: commit to staying in Fairfield and living with the ruse, or leave Fairfield and promise to never reveal it to the outside world. David encourages Judy to stay in the community, but Wallace suggests she think it over and make whatever decision she feels is best in her heart as he will support whatever she chooses.

Judy wanders the streets of Fairfield, wrestling with her decision. She goes to Marcia's house and reveals the truth of Fairfield to her. Marcia isn't bothered by it though, saying she's happy so she doesn't care. Judy is bothered by her best friend's willful ignorance and tells Marcia that she is leaning towards leaving Fairfield to see the outside world.

Judy comes home to find her parents and grandfather waiting for her. She tells them that she has decided to leave Fairfield and see what else is out there. Carol breaks down crying while David tries to comfort her. Wallace accepts Judy’s decision. Holding back tears, Judy goes upstairs and packs a bag. As she leaves the house, Wallace slips an envelope of money into her bag.

Judy walks down the road, crossing the boundaries of Fairfield for the first time in her life. She continues walking until she reaches a highway where she is startled by the giant trucks speeding by. Judy takes a deep breath and continues walking down the side of the road toward the unknown.

Plot: Dashiel “Dash” Bad Horse (Martin Sensmeier) sits in a rundown road house just outside the boundaries of the Prairie Rose Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He insults one of the other patrons, who promptly attacks Dash. Always ready for a fight, Dash throws the man through the front window of the establishment. Dash then sits back down with his back to the other patrons. The hulking Shunka (Geno Segers) enters the building and everyone points to Dash. Shunka asks Dash if he knows what “rez” he is on. Dash says of course he does, he was born there. Dash takes another drink, then gets up and says that if anyone wants a fight, they ought to make it a fair one - no guns. Shunka smiles and nods, instructing everyone to keep their guns holstered. Three men charge at Dash. He dodges a few punches before grabbing one of their heads and slamming it into the bar. Dash grabs a bottle of whiskey and smashes it over the head of another attacker. The third man pulls a knife and lunges at Dash, but Dash expertly breaks the man’s arm and throws him to the bar floor. Shunka gets in a cheap shot, hitting Dash over the head with his gun, knocking him out.

A convoy of SUVs pull up to the currently under construction Crazy Horse Casino. The men get out of the trucks. Shunka drags a barely conscious Dash out through the unfinished building and into an office. Dash is forced into a seat in front of Chief Lincoln Red Crow (Wes Studi) - the “big man” on the reservation. Red Crow refers to Dash by name, catching Dash by surprise, stating that he was surprised that the man causing all that trouble down at the watering hole was the long lost son of the Prairie Rose Reservation. Dash doesn’t seem interested in catching up, so Red Crow places a bloody knife on top of his desk. He reminds Dash that his old “Uncle” Red Crow is not one to be fucked with. Dash starts to reply, but Red Crow tells him to shut up and listen. He gets up and grabs Dash by the head. Red Crow traces the knife along Dash’s forehead, telling him that he never forgot how to take a knife and slice someone from forehead and all the way back to the base of the skull. Red Crow then pushes the handcuffed Dash onto the floor, where a dead, scalped body lays in a pool of blood. Dash asks if Red Crow still runs amok of the law just to spend time with some sissy boys behind bars. Red Crow laughs and informs Dash that he is the law on reservation these days, not that he expected Dash to know after 15 years away from Prairie Rose. Red Crow informs Dash that he is now the Chief of the Tribal Police and the president of the Oglala Tribal Council. Dash asks Red Crow what exactly he wants with him. Red Crow smiles and offers Dash a job with the tribal police - he could use someone like Dash.

Shunka and Dash stand across a field from a house in shambles. Shunka gives Dash a hard slap on the back, saying it would be a real shame if he died on his first day on the job. They are joined by another member of the tribal police, Officer Franklin Falls Down (Eddie Spears), who informs them that it should be a simple meth lab raid. Dash nods. The three officers kick down the door, all armed with shotguns. One of the meth cooks charges at Dash, but he quickly knocks the man out with the butt of his shotgun. They round up all the cooks in the house and bring them down to the station. As soon as they throw everyone into a holding cell, a call comes over the police radio about a protest down at the casino construction site. Shunka says he’ll stay at the station. He has no interest in dealing with protesters right now. Franklin tells Dash to come with him to help calm things down at the casino. On the drive over, Franklin tells Dash that he hopes he will be an honest cop on the reservation - he’s the only one currently. Dash tells Franklin that he hasn’t decided what kind of cop he wants to be yet.

Arriving at the protest, Dash and Franklin find that the protestors have begun throwing rocks at the building. Dash gets out of the patrol car and quickly jumps into the fray. After he is hit with one of the flying rocks, Dash gets out his billy club and begins shoving the protestors back with it. A woman fights through the crowd and spits at Dash and Franklin. After a moment of recognition, Dash realizes that the protestor is his own mother, Gina Bad Horse (Tantoo Cardinal). He grabs her by the throat and asks her to give him a reason not to arrest her. Diesel (Kevin Gage) emerges and holds a knife to Dash’s neck. He tells Dash to let Gina go before he slices his jugular. Dash lets go of his mother’s throat. Franklin fires a shotgun blast into the air, telling everyone that the protest is over and everyone needs to go home now. Dash watches in anger as his mother walks away with Diesel’s arm around her.

Red Crow emerges from the building and thanks Dash and Franklin for breaking things up. He then tells Dash that he wants to give him a tour of the rez as it has been 15 years since Dash has been around. Red Crow points out the poverty that most of the tribe lives in. He then gives a short speech about how it is his hope that the casino can help change all of that. Soon they arrive in White Haven, a town bordering the Prairie Rose Reservation. The two of them walk into a store. A woman, Carol (Jessica Matten), bumps into them and begins berating Red Crow, who surprisingly brushes off the altercation without incident. Dash watches Carol as she walks away. He clearly likes what he sees. Red Crow tells Dash to keep his eyes off his daughter - she’s more trouble than she would be worth to him anyway. Red Crow purchases a couple of beers from the store. Dash and Red Crow sit in front of the store and drink their beers.

Late at night, Dash drives out to the middle of nowhere. He parks and sits on the hood of his car. Shortly after another car pulls up next to his. Earl Nitz (Jeff Fahey) gets out and asks, “Agent Bad Horse, how are things back in hell?”

"This does everything a pilot needs to do: establish the setting, introduce the characters, expose the dynamics, and grab your attention. And just when I was thinking I’d like to know more about Dash, that ending indicates that things are about to get a whole lot more complicated." - Tim Givens, Lexington Ledger

"Scalped looks like it could be nice, gritty crime series to kick everything off with. While Martin Sensmeier does play the main character as particularly likable, the aggression his character uses keeps the character highly watchable. My interest is definitely grabbed." - Sam Morris, Oregonian

"The pilot episode of Scaled is brutally efficient. It starts with a bang and then intricately introduces the setting, main players and the themes the series is sure to tackle. Martin Sensmeier is obviously the protagonist, or lead anti-hero, but Wes Studi exudes power and charisma as the reservation's chief and likely series villain." - Lois Reeves, Dodge City Daily Globe

LRF NOW Original Series: Scalped - Season 1 Episode 2

Jeff Fahey .... Agent Earl Nitz (Regular)
Geno Segers .... Shunka (Recurring)

Plot: Dash (Martin Sensmeier) and Agent Nitz (Jeff Fahey) are still out in the middle of nowhere discussing the case against Chief Red Crow. Nitz brings up Red Crow's past time as a militant Native activist alongside Dash's mother. Just the mention of his mother causes Dash to tense up. He bristles and tells Nitz that he already is aware of the Dog Soldier Society, the name of the activist organization. Nitz then reminds Dash that one of the Dog Soldiers murdered and scalped two FBI agents 30 years prior. Dash points out that he thought that the feds convicted someone of those murders decades ago. Nitz says they did, but he doesn't buy it and the scalps have still never been recovered. Before they part ways, Nitz tells Dash to continue getting close to Red Crow - if they can get their hands on those scalps they might be able to take Red Crow down.

In need of some positive press after the protest outside of the casino, Chief Red Crow (Wes Studi) sends Dash and Officer Franklin Falls Down (Eddie Spears) to break up another meth lab. When the two officers arrive at the location, they stake out the barn the lab is reportedly in. After a while, Franklin calls over the radio to ask where their backup is. Dash gets out of the car and begins walking toward the barn, shotgun in hand. He tells Franklin that there's no point in waiting for backup and that they might as well just go in and get the raid over with. Franklin jokes that Dash must have a death wish and hopes he isn't around when it goes down. Franklin counts down and busts open the door. Dash and Franklin find the meth dealers waiting for them. Heavily out-numbered, Franklin is hit in the vest by a few bullets. Dash fires off every shell in his shotgun, before turning the empty gun into a blunt weapon, taking out a couple more thugs with it in brutal fashion. Dash takes cover and pulls out two pistols. Dash runs and slides across a table, shooting in both directions.

Once the gunshots finally stop and the clouds of dust and meth have settled, Dash begins clearly the building when he finds a young man cowering in a corner, Dino Poor Bear (Kiowa Gordon). Dash knows the family name and tells Dino to hurry home to "Granny". Before Dino leaves, Dash stops him for a moment and tells him that this is his one and only chance - if he catches Dino in another meth lab, he'll kill him like all the others. Dino looks around at the half dozen bodies lying dead on the floor. He quickly nods his head and runs away from the barn. Dash hears Franklin coughing and struggling for breath nearby and goes to check on him. Franklin asks if Dash caught any bullets in his vest too. Dash unbuttons his shirt, revealing that he didn't bother wearing one. Dash calls for an ambulance for Franklin over the radio. Dash says that he already knows why Red Crow would want him dead, but asks Franklin if he's on Red Crow's "shit list" as well. Franklin painfully laughs, telling Dash that honest cops don't last long on the rez - Red Crow makes sure of it.

Dash is at a bar watching Carol Red Crow (Jessica Matten) aggressively flirt with a biker. Unbeknownst to Dash, Shunka is watching him from a booth across the bar. Carol excuses herself to use the restroom. As soon as she is out of sight, Dash storms over and slams the biker's head into the bar. Before the biker can even hit the floor, Dash grabs his arm and snaps it behind his back, breaking his arm. Dash tells the biker to get lost before he breaks his other arm as well. Shunka chuckles to himself and pulls out his phone to call Red Crow. Shunka informs his boss that Dash clearly has eyes for Carol. When Carol comes out of the restroom, with a little white powder showing just under her nose, she looks around, confused as to where her date went.

Plot: In his office at the Crazy Horse Casino, Chief Red Crow (Wes Studi) is paid a visit by the other members of the Oglala Tribal Council. They let him know that they have some rather large concerns about current matters on the Prairie Rose Reservation. When he inquires what they have an issue with, they mention that they are not thrilled that he has hired Gina Bad Horse's son to be an officer with the tribal police. As if on queue, Dash Bad Horse (Martin Sensmeier) bursts into the room, pissed about not having any backup at the latest meth lab bust where Officer Falls Down was nearly killed. Red Crow asks the council if they can continue their conversation some other time. As soon as they leave, Dash holds a gun to Red Crow's head and demands to know why he set them up to die in that meth lab. Red Crow laughs it off, insisting that he likes Dash, but that if he aims a gun at him again he better be ready to pull the trigger.

Dash storms out of the casino, smashing a window on the way out. He gets into his car and speeds off as he lights a cigarette. A coyote crosses the road causing an oncoming car to swerve toward Dash's car. He narrowly avoid being hit and slams on his breaks. The other car has stopped in the middle of the road. Dash gets out of his car with his nightstick and charges over to the other vehicle. When he sees that the other driver is Carol Red Crow (Jessica Matten) he lowers his nightstick, instead beginning to yell at her, asking if she is trying to kill the both of them with her terrible driving. She mentions there was a coyote in the road. He asks her if the life of a coyote is worth more than her own. She doesn't answer his question. Dash then notices that Carol is trying to hide a black eye she has. Dash grabs her by the chin to get a better look and demands to know who hit her so he can give the son of a bitch a matching black eye. Carol refuses to answer. Dash loses his patience and tells Carol to just hit the coyote next time. He gets back into his car and drives away.

Dash meets up with Agent Nitz (Jeff Fahey) at their usual spot for a progress report. Dash tells Nitz about his confrontation with Red Crow and the meth lab bust. Nitz is annoyed that Dash would confront Red Crow like that until Dash mentions that the tribal council was there when it happened and they did not look too happy with him. This makes Nitz smile a bit. Dash then describes how he feels he was set up to be killed at the meth lab. Nitz disagrees with Dash's assessment though, instead suggesting that the assailants were more likely gunning Falls Down, being the honest cop he is, and Dash just got in the way. As Dash turns to walk back toward his car, Nitz tells Dash to keep his distance from Red Crow's daughter - no pussy is worth fucking the investigation - and to stop whining and get back to work.

That night Dash gets drunk and breaks into the lone library on the rez. He pulls every newspaper article he can find about the FBI incident from 30 years prior at Standing Rock. He reads one about the four leading members of the Dog Soldier Society - Lincoln Red Crow, Gina Bad Horse, Arthur "Catcher" Pendergrass and Lawrence Belcourt. The most recent article in the stack is about Belcourt confessing to the two murders. Dash takes the articles and leaves the library. He leaves the articles on the doorstep of his mother, Gina Bad Horse. He then throws a rock through her front window before driving off. Gina (Tantoo Cardinal) wakes up from the noise of broken glass. She shakes Diesel (Kevin Gage) in bed next to her until he wakes up too. She asks him to take a look to make sure they are safe. Diesel groggily rises from the bed. He grabs a baseball bat and takes a swig of warm beer. He finds the broken window. He opens the front door to look around, but only finds the articles on the steps.

Plot: Chief Lincoln Red Crow (Wes Studi) arrives home after a long day at the casino accompanied by a prostitute. The woman begins going down on him at the front door when she trips over something. Red Crow looks at the ground and finds a large stack of copies of the articles about the Standing Rock FBI murders on his door step. Red Crow tells the prostitute to leave. She reminds Red Crow that he drove her there. Red Crow throws a $100 bill at her and tells her to call herself a taxi or something.

Gina Bad Horse (Tantoo Cardinal) wakes up in the middle of the night for a glass of water. She drops the glass when she finds Red Crow sitting in her living room looking at old family photo albums. He calmly pleads with Gina to stop protesting his soon-to-be-opened casino. She sits down across from him and asks him if he remembers Lawrence Belcourt. Red Crow sets some of the articles on the table, saying that if he didn't he certainly does now. Gina tells Red Crow that she has decided to visit Lawrence in prison in Kansas. Red Crow wishes her luck with that and leaves the house.

Dash (Martin Sensmeier) sits in a tribal police patrol car on top of a hill overlooking a junkyard. He pulls out some binoculars and looks through them. In the junkyard, Carol Red Crow (Jessica Matten) is having sex with a man on the hood of a demolished old car. Dash continues watching as the man finishes. Carol then walks away. Dash gets out of the car and walks toward the junkyard, nightstick in-hand. Carol has already left and the man is trying to get his car to start as Dash approaches. Dash asks the man if needs a hand, then smashes the driver-side window with the nightstick. Dash pulls the man through the shattered window and begins beating on him until he is unconscious. With the man beaten to a bloody pulp, Dash is satisfied and walks away.

Meanwhile, Diesel (Kevin Gage) is having sex with a prostitute in a motel room, repeatedly calling her Gina. The prostitute points out that her name isn't Gina. Diesel tells her he doesn't care and continues until he finishes. As he lays on the bed, his phone begins to ring. He looks at the caller ID, which says Gina.

Dash is driving toward the casino when he sees Dino Poor Bear (Kiowa Gordon) walking along the side of the road. Dash drives past, but decides to stop and pull up next to Dino. Dash asks Dino is he's been staying away from meth and his former crew. Dino confirms that he has. Dash then asks how Dino is making money these days. Dino shrugs and says he isn't. Dash tells Dino to get in the car. They drive to the casino and go inside. Dash leads Dino towards Red Crow's office, but are stopped outside by Shunka (Geno Segers), who asks if they have an appointment. Dash brushes past him and enters the office. Red Crow, sitting behind his desk, asks Dash what he wants. Dash then pulls Dino into the room and demands that Red Crow give Dino an honest job at the casino. Red Crow agrees and tells Dino to show up for a janitorial job next week when the casino finally opens. Dino thanks Red Crow profusely. Dash and Dino then leave the office. Shunka closes the door behind them and returns to standing guard outside the office. The prostitute comes out from under Red Crow's desk and wipes her mouth. Red Crow pays her and she leaves.

Tantoo Cardinal .... Gina Bad Horse (Regular)
Jessica Matten .... Carol Red Crow (Regular)

Plot: The night of the Crazy Horse Casino's grand opening is ongoing. Chief Lincoln Red Crow (Wes Studi) walks around the buzzing casino with a smile on his face, shaking hands with people of importance. He sees a woman in the distance standing on a table, yelling in protest. He apologizes to the man he was greeting and walks over to the table with Shunka (Geno Segers). When he gets closer he realizes it is Gina Bad Horse (Tantoo Cardinal). He pulls Shunka close asking how she got in here, Shunka shrugs. Red Crow orders him to get her the fuck out of there before the press can turn their cameras onto her. Shunka pulls her down from the table and drags her by her hair, leading to people to return to their gambling and celebrating. Once outside, Shunka assures her that he only hasn’t killed her because Red Crow said not to, but if that ever changes, he will gladly do the deed. Gina spits in Shunka's face. He wipes the spit off with his hand and licks it up. Gina is disturbed by this act and begrudgingly walks away. Shunka goes back inside where Red Crow asks him to keep an eye on the door for Gina or any other protestors.

Gina walks to a car in the parking lot where Diesel (Kevin Gage) is waiting for her. He can tell right away that Red Crow had her roughed up. He gets out of the car, gets a machete out of the trunk and marches toward the casino. Gina goes after him, but Diesel angrily tells her to get back in the car and let him take care of things now. Gina tells Diesel to watch out for Shunka as he is surely on the lookout for any trouble now. Diesel gives Gina a quick kiss and tells her he'll use the back door. He then slaps her on the ass. Gina smiles and goes back to the car. She pulls out her phone and tries to call Dash.

Dash Bad Horse (Martin Sensmeier) sits at the bar, while the noise of the casino lingers in the background. His phone begins ringing. He pulls it out, but turns it off when he sees the call is from his mother. In a drunken stupor he begins to tell the disinterested bartender about his mother. She was always more interested in fighting for her causes rather than fighting for and raising him. That’s why he left town all those years back. The bartender continues pouring the alcohol, clearly not bothered by his story, hearing it time and again. Dash stands after his last shot and walks away. He tries to start his car, but he is too drunk to even get the key into the ignition. He eventually gives up, leaving the keys and the car behind as he stumbles toward the main road.

Dash walks along the side of the road, no end in sight, staggering as he does. He simply keeps walking until he sees something that piques his interest: a trailer, surrounded by motorbikes and a car. Dash instantly recognizes the car as Carol Red Crow's. Dash walks up to the trailer door and tries to listen in. He hears some nondescript moaning or groaning. He pulls out his gun and kicks the door open. Inside he finds Carol Red Crow (Jessica Matten), naked and high, surrounded by a bunch of naked bikers. One of the men lunge toward Dash, who pistol whip him and throws him out of the trailer. Another charges him, but Dash throws him through a window. Finally one scrambles for a gun, but Dash grabs his hand, forcing the shot through the trailer's ceiling. Dash orders the rest of the men to leave on their own before he decides to use deadly force. The bikers quickly put their pants back on, scurry outside, and ride their motorcycles away from the trailer. Carol gets up and slaps Dash across the face. Angered, Dash slaps her back, sending her stumbling a bit. Carol tells Dash that she knows he's the one running off all her fuck-buddies. She sits down and lights a cigarette. She explains that at first she though it was her father, but she realized that he doesn't care enough about her to go through all that effort. Carol asks Dash what his end-game is with her. Dash says he just didn't like that she ended up being a cheap whore after all the years he spent away and idealizing her. Carol yells at Dash and throws an ashtray at him. Dash pushes her down into a laying position. Carol flicks her cigarette onto the floor and pulls down Dash's pants. The two begin having sex, trashing the trailer in the process.

Plot: After watching the floor of the Crazy Horse Casino during the casino's opening night, Chief Lincoln Red Crow (Wes Studi) decides to retire to his office. He instructs Shunka (Geno Segers) to keep an eye on things in the meantime. When Red Crow enters his office he finds it trashed and his guard dogs murdered and decapitated. He goes to his safe and finds it empty. Red Crow gets on the phone with Dash Bad Horse (Martin Sensmeier), who has just arrived back at the casino. Red Crow tells Dash to be on the look out for anyone covered in dog blood. Dash is confused by this instruction until he sees Diesel (Kevin Gage) covered in blood exiting the casino.

Dash gives chase after Diesel throughout the parking lot of the casino. Dash finally catches up with Diesel as he cuts through a nearby debilitated rodeo bull pit. Dash tackles Diesel to the dirt in the middle of the pit. The two struggle and fight. Dash gets the upperhand thanks to his speed, but Diesel manages to stab Dash in the arm with his knife and pushes him away. Dash gets up and hits Diesel over the head with a rock, knocking him out. Dash drags Diesel all the way back to his car and takes him to the tribal police station, leaving him in the care of Officer Franklin Falls Down (Eddie Spears). Dash leaves, saying he's going to go tell Red Crow in person that he caught him.

Gina Bad Horse (Tantoo Cardinal) sits in the car still waiting for Diesel to return when her phone rings. On the other end is Catcher (Raoul Trujillo), another of her former Dog Soldier co-horts. He tells her that he has seen Dash's totem and it is a spider. Gina tries to ask what exactly Catcher is trying to explain, but Catcher suddenly hangs up the phone before answering. Gina looks at the time and decides to leave the parking lot, driving back home. She writes a note, leaving it on the front door, that says she will be back in a few days. She then drives away, heading south.

Diesel sits in the cell of the tribal police station when FBI Agent Earl Nitz (Jeff Fahey) arrives and orders Officer Falls Down to turn Diesel over to him as he is a federal fugitive. Falls Down states that he knows that the FBI has no jurisdiction on the rez. Nitz asks for a few minutes of time with the prisoner then in private. Officer Falls Down agrees and goes outside for a cigarette break. Nitz thanks Diesel for acquiring the package for him from Red Crow's office, calling him "Agent Fillenworth". Diesel asks how long until he can get out of jail, and Nitz says his office will be working on it as he can't very well leave an undercover agent like him behind bars.

Gina drives straight through Nebraska without stopping before crossing the border into Kansas. As she continues down the highway, signs for the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary begin popping up on the side of the road. She takes a deep breath as she pulls her car to a stop in front of the massive federal prison complex.

Plot: Gina Bad Horse (Tantoo Cardinal) arrives at Leavenworth Federal Prison in Kansas to visit Lawrence Belcourt (Graham Greene), her fellow Dog Soldier who has been in prison for the murder of the FBI agent for all these years. He explains that he is pleasantly surprised to see her as he doesn't really have much contact with the other former Dog Soldiers outside of the occasional talk or letter with Lincoln Red Crow. This revelation surprises Gina, and Lawrence explains that Red Crow pays for him to be protected in the prison by one of the black gangs. Gina breaks down crying, profusely apologizing for never really trying to get him out of prison. Lawrence admits that it was hard for a while to be behind bars for a crime he only witnessed, but he has now accepted it as his lot in life. Gina laments that if she had the courage to pull the trigger herself all those years ago, everything could have turned out differently for them.

Chief Lincoln Red Crow (Wes Studi) receives a phone call in his office while Dino Poor Bear (Kiowa Gordon) is cleaning up all the dog blood. On the phone is Johnny Tongue (Jason Scott Lee), a notorious Minnesota Hmong gangster who has helped Red Crow finance the Crazy Horse Casino. Johnny mentions that he has already begun to hear some troubling news about what has been going on at the new casino. Red Crow tries to reassure Johnny that everything is already fine, but Johnny tells him that he is going to send one of his best men, Mr. Brass, down to the reservation to help take care of the threats to the casino. Before Red Crow can interject, Johnny has already hung up the phone.

Dashiell "Dash" Bad Horse (Martin Sensmeier) is driving toward the casino when he finally looks at his arm and realizes just how much blood he is losing. He decides to go to Carol Red Crow's (Jessica Matten) trailer to see her. When she sees the blood, she insists he sit down. She pours some liquor over the wound and begins stitching it up with dental floss. When she's done, she asks how it feels. Dash replies that it feels minty. Carol then realizes that she used the minty floss and laughs. To help with the pain, she offers him some meth. Dash hesitates, but decides to try it.

Granny Poor Bear (Geraldine Keams) is sweeping a prairie rattlesnake away from her front door when she notices Catcher (Raoul Trujillo) approaching the house. She asks him what he wants since he usually isn't seen this close to civilization unless it's for liquor. He tells her that he has been trying to find Gina Bad Horse. Granny says that she hasn't seen Gina. Catcher is disappointed and promptly turns around and walks away from the house. Granny is confused by the exchange.

Gina is still crying in her car as she drives back into South Dakota. Lawrence Belcourt calls the casino. Red Crow answers, still angry from his conversation with Johnny Tongue. Lawrence tells Red Crow that he doesn't want him to waste his money paying for his protection anymore after his visit with Gina. Red Crow is curious about the visit. Lawrence tells Red Crow to relax, he didn't give her any information she didn't already have.

Wes Studi .... Chief Lincoln Red Crow (Regular)
Tantoo Cardinal .... Gina Bad Horse (Regular)
Jeff Fahey .... Agent Earl Nitz (Regular)
Jessica Matten .... Carol Red Crow (Regular)

Plot: One morning, Lawrence Belcourt (Graham Greene) goes through his daily prison routine. He gets dressed, brushes his teeth, and leaves his cell for breakfast. As he is in line for breakfast, he is shivved several times by the very black gang that used to be paid to protect him. Belcourt collapses to the floor. A pool of blood surrounds Belcourt as he slowly dies.

Meanwhile, Agent Earl Nitz (Jeff Fahey) recovers a package - the one stolen from Lincoln Red Crow's safe by Diesel - that is stashed in the parking lot of the casino. He takes it into his car and opens it, revealing two old, dried out scalps.

Gina Bad Horse (Tantoo Cardinal) returns to the Prairie Rose Indian Reservation, heading straight to the Crazy Horse Casino. She once again goes to confront Chief Lincoln Red Crow (Wes Studi). She tells him that she went to see Belcourt. Red Crow says that he knows and grabs Gina by the neck, asking why she did it. Gina tells Red Crow that she feels bad about how it all went down and that Belcourt doesn't deserve to spend his entire life behind bars. Gina gives Red Crow a kiss, referring to it as a goodbye kiss. Cather (Raoul Trujillo) watches this from across the casino floor.

Dashiel "Dash" Bad Horse (Martin Sensmeier) wakes up in a haze next to a naked Carol Red Crow (Jessica Matten). They are both recovering from a night of sex and meth abuse. Carol reminds Dash that they actually had their first sort-of sexual experience together. Dash is confused and hungover, admitting that he doesn't remember. She says that when they were in middle school, she saw him peeking into the girl's bathroom. She purposely left her stall open so that he could watch her urinate. Dash suddenly remembers and laughs about it. Dash then realizes that he has left Diesel (Kevin Gage) in the jail cell. Dash goes back to the station, deciding to release Diesel without notifying Chief Red Crow.

Diesel is picked up by Nitz, who offers to take Diesel to a safehouse just off of the reservation. Nitz calls Dash and tells him to meet him at the safehouse as well. Nitz explains to Dash that Diesel has secretly been working for the FBI as well to get close to Gina to learn more about her role in the murder over 30 years prior. Dash is angry that Diesel has been deceiving his mother and asks Nitz why he asked him to come to the safehouse. Nitz hands Dash a gun and orders him to kill "Diesel". Dash asks when things will end now that Nitz has the scalps of the agents. Nitz tells Dash that the mission will end when the killer of the FBI agents pays for their crime. Dash grabs the gun, shoots Diesel, and leaves the building.

After a long few days of slowly cleaning up dog blood and other messes from the casino's opening weekend, Dino Poor Bear (Kiowa Gordon) walks along the side of the road toward Granny's house. He takes a shortcut when he notices something in the grass. He walks up to the object, only to be horrified to find the murdered and scalped body of Gina Bad Horse.

As the sun sets, the crime scene surrounding Gina Bad Horse's body is filled with the flashing blue and red lights of police cars. Dash pulls up and walks toward the crime scene. Officer Franklin Falls Down (Eddie Spears) tries to hold Dash back, but once Dash realizes that the body is his mother's, he charges through the barrier. He breaks down crying next to his mother's body.

“I have to commend this season for having continued forward momentum, even if the finale felt a bit lackluster until its final few scenes. Instead, the real highlight of the season is its penultimate episode. 'Leavenworth' was a stellar showcase for the show’s older actors (Tantoo Cardinal, guest Graham Greene, and series MVP Wes Studi)” - Tim Givens, Lexington Ledger

"The plot of Scalped definitely loses its way at times to the point that when the two FBI agent scalps finally come back into the series, they have been long forgotten by viewers. While no episodes are completely bad, there is some definite padding in the middle episodes. Writers Ellis and Gallo use eight episodes when six could have easily sufficed." - Sam Morris, Oregonian

"There are a few great episodes in the first season of Scalped, but there are just as many episodes that felt dull and slow. The last couple episodes did manage to bring back some of the interest that had been lost in the middle of the season, but it might have been too little, too late." - Lois Reeves, Dodge City Daily Globe
