Reaction: Writer Jimmy Ellis hasn't had great luck at the box office this season, with all three of his films losing money at the box office so far. He still has one more chance to turn around things financially with Marvel Universe film Black Widow x Hawkeye due out in Round 9.
"Jim Sheridan’s The Beauty is a poignant drama exploring themes of love, loss, and artistic rebirth. Ralph Fiennes excels in the lead role as Jimmy Ellis' script blends past memories with his present despair. Despite occasional slow pacing, Sheridan’s direction imbues each scene with depth. The Beauty is a heartfelt exploration of the transformative power of art and human connection." - Charlie Sage, HBC-TV
"The Beauty aims for prestige status as a film about artistic suffering, but fell a bit short of the mark of 'great' to me. There's some good stuff in there, but the film simply can't find a way to sustain it for more than just small moments. That said, the casting was impeccable, with all involved delivering strong, naturalistic performances. Jimmy Ellis' script and Jim Sheridan's direction also does manage to capture some impressive moments of raw humanity, but it's not quite as profound as it could have been." - Gregory Fletcher, Los Angeles Times-Journal
"The Beauty uses that natural beauty of its setting to great effect. Ralph Fiennes is great as usual, but his character feels designed to win awards rather than entertain viewers. Director Jim Sheridan's craftsmanship is evident in the film, but the film feels less like a masterpiece and more like a polished imitation hanging in a gallery of GRA hopefuls." - Stephen Ridley, Boston Globe
Rated R for thematic elements, sexual content, and brief strong language
