Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.
Writer Clive Steinbeck finally made his long-awaited return to LRF audiences with Bigfoot earlier this season - his first film since Season 10's Jersey Devil. This made me decide to take "a second look" back at that film. When it was released back in Season 10, I recall it being a fun, schlocky horror film of the great B-movie variety in line with director Kevin Smith's work on Tusk and Red State. I didn't adore it, but I certainly didn't hate it.
Taking a second look now, I have to stand by my original stance of the film being an entertaining B-movie - but an even better version of that that I had remembered. I had forgotten just how stacked the cast was: John Goodman, Christopher Walken, Frank Grillo, etc. Character development can be a little spotty, but the strong casting makes up for a lot of that. Jersey Devil should be a cult favorite by now with its mix of absurdity and gore.
