Reaction: Writer Ben Collins is officially on a bit of a cold streak at the box office with four films in a row failing to turn a profit - and it may be no coincidence that two were period romance films.

"A tour de force behind the camera for director Garth Davis as his skillful direction helps his very talented cast, led by Kiernan Shipka and Joseph Quin, through what honestly felt like a quite sluggishly paced (at times) and simply overly-dramatic film." - Jason Helm, New York Observer

"Love Death Revolution is an ambitious historical romance that aims for sweeping grandeur but ultimately overstays its welcome. The film drags with numerous scenes reiterating the same emotional beats, particularly in the second half when Stephanie and Pierre's romance becomes increasingly melodramatic. The film somehow manages to feel super-long, but also feels like it rushes through important plot beats." - David Boorman, Film Threat

"I'm not sure how exciting the French Revolution could ever really be on the big screen, but the decision to focus entirely on fictional characters rather than engaging with real historical figures robs the story of authenticity, making the revolution feel more like a backdrop than an organic force shaping the drama. The lack of any French actors in major roles also felt like misstep, as the film's all British and American cast can feel out of place at times. Despite some striking visuals and a decent love story at the center, Love, Death, Revolution feels like a bit of a dud that could have benefitted from tighter plotting and a more authentic angle." - Joseph Goodrich, Salt Lake Tribune

Rated R for violence, strong thematic material, and some sexual content/nudity
