Reaction: So close! Westerns generally don't set the box office on fire, and this one is an extremely dark, expensive western. We're glad we didn't lose too much on it, but more than anything we're glad that this amazing book has finally hit the big screen.
"Filled with beauty and brutality, Jeremy Saulnier's translation of Cormac McCarthy's supposedly unfilmable words paints a vivid picture across the widescreen. He is aided by a talented and committed cast - every actor completely disappearing into their roles." - Charles Yost, The Oregonian
"The story starts with misery and just gets deeper and deeper with torture, rape, stunningly vicious beatings, and mass murder all looming into the picture. It felt grim in the '50s when a lawman won a fight but lost his hope. Here, everyone starts with no hope and goes on to lose their souls and their lives, usually in that order." - Paul Onkean, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"Cormac McCarthy fans have long waited for this film to happen with their fingers crossed. Well, I can assure them that Jeremy Saulnier's film is just as violent and beautiful and brutal and thought-provoking as the novel. There has long been concern on how Judge Holden would be portrayed on the big screen, but Russell Crowe (and the make-up department) completely nail the look, the feel, the menace of the character." - Glenn Howard, Total Film
