Another round, another three films released. It was an interesting round that featured some interesting, albeit flawed, films.
1. Life on Mars Soundtrack
The film itself had some serious flaws, but its sweet 70s soundtrack was not one of them. Not only are all the songs themselves awesome, but they also capture the tone and mood perfectly.
2. Doppelganger
Just looking at the numbers for this one do it's level of success a huge diservice. This was an original big budget sci-fi thriller (not action - THRILLER) that made a profit of over $80 million. That's HUGE - especially in a season that has not always had the easiest time at the box office.
3. Scoot McNairy
He has had supporting roles in three highly acclaimed films this season. While some of the roles aren't especially big or interesting, he has done a good job at keeping his exposure up after the hit of Booster Gold. It would be nice to see him in a leading role eventually.
4. Lon Charles
The writer is beginning to be known for his unique films based on true stories. This season has seen featured two of his strongest scripts, both of which have to be considered serious awards contenders.
5. The Cast of Bad Education
Lon Charles and J.C. Chandor's true story drama Bad Education might feature the most eclectic and outside of the box cast imaginable. The creative casting really helps build the characters with the minimal backstory given. The outside-the-group really inhabited their characters completely.
5. Millie Bobby Brown
Easily the worst part of Doppelganger. She has managed to ride her over-hyped on the overrated "Stranger Things" into a fledgling film career that we now must unfortunately suffer through.
4. Life on Mars' Box Office
I would have pegged this one as a sure thing, but I would have been dead wrong. The failure of Life on Mars at the box office poses many questions, the biggest being: is Bradley Cooper a box office draw?
3. The Ending of Doppelganger
I feel like Doppelganger's ending left something to be desired. In fact, I don't feel like it really even had an ending - just a cliffhanger building up to an obviously desired sequel. That may fly at the end of a season of a TV show, but it's a cop out when it comes to the cinema.
2. Life on Mars
I had really high hopes for this one, obviously, but the story was all over the map. Just when a plot line started getting good, it was pushed away for something else. Clearly, director Doug Liman and writer John Malone had trouble figuring out what the primary story line should be.
1. Bradley Cooper's Box Office Appeal
I mentioned it in regards to Life on Mars' performance, but looking back he hasn't had a hit that wasn't part of an established franchise (Mass Effect: Cerberus) since Season 1's Paradise Lost. True West made a tiny profit, but Ringer and Life on Mars both lost money for the studio. It will be very interesting to see if he can turn it around with his next star vehicle.
