Reaction: The numbers are more than we expected, but the split is exactly as expected. We always expected a soccer-centric film would perform better overseas than in the US.
"Standing Back is a frustrating film. There are plenty of positives, like Vinnie Jones playing a serious role and the lead performance from Garfield, but then it continually shoots itself in the foot with decisions like having famous TV doctors play the various doctors in the film. It's a film that takes one step forward and two steps back at every turn." - Richard Park, Globe and Mail
"After the disappointing (but high-grossing) Jack the Ripper, Tom Hooper wisely returns to something a bit more in his wheelhouse. While not as strong an effort as his 2009 film The Damned United, Hooper is adept at making films that are dramatic, but not too dramatic." - Shawn Moseby, Fresno Bee
"I was surprised with the story Standing Back decided to tell. I was fully expecting another sports film where athlete comes back from an injury and leads his team to victory on the field/court. By making it more about Andrew Garfield's transition within the sport from the field to behind the scenes, it added a fresh angle to the material." - Adam Carpenter, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
