This past round saw Made in Abyss light up the box office with its exciting world building, but it also subjected audiences to Liam James. Here's the roundup...
5. Round 9 Box Office
The box office numbers were pretty solid for Last Resort Films during this past round. Each of the three films made a profit while Made in Abyss became one of the studio's highest grossers.
4. Bel Powley as Monica Lewinsky
Not only do I love that they decided to go with a lesser known actress for the role of Monica Lewinsky in Stained (as much as I love her, not every movie needs to star Elizabeth Olsen), but Bel Powley is also a very talented young actress who I expect to do a great job in the role opposite Matthew McConaughey's Bill Clinton.
3. Made in Abyss
The movie set the box office on fire without the help of a super well-known IP (I had never heard of the source material before the film) or big stars.
2. Peter Jackson
Speaking of Made in Abyss, the film's director Peter Jackson is back in strong form after several disappointing films in a row (don't get me started on those needlessly long Hobbit movies or The Lovely Bones, which I contend is one of the worst movies I've ever seen).
1. Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake "The Steak" Gyllenhaal provides further evidence that he is arguably the most talented actor of his generation with another strong performance in Heavy Rain.
5. Adam Wingard
I've been a fan of his since You're Next, and The Guest is one of my favorite films of the last decade. That said, I expected better work from him on Heavy Rain.
4. Evan Rachel Wood
She is not likable enough to be a movie star. Quit trying to shove her down our throats, Hollywood. She's been in two films this season: Reality and High Society. I didn't like her in either.
3. Andy Muschietti
Similar to Adam Wingard and Heavy Rain, Andy Muscietti is a filmmaker who should be an asset to a production. He didn't seem to do anything with Reality that a lesser filmmaker couldn't have done.
2. Peter Jackson's Salary
Yes, Peter Jackson delivered his best film since the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, but no way did he do over $40 million worth of work on Made in Abyss.
1. Liam James
How he secured a co-starring role in such a large production like Made in Abyss is baffling to me. Nothing on his resume would indicate towards him being capable of such a prominent role. The kid has no charisma and makes Kristen Stewart look downright cheery. You'd think he'd be able to successfully play a robot, but you'd be wrong.
