Well, now that was quite the ceremony. I have to say that I have really enjoyed officially joining the Last Resort Films community this past season and am looking forward to a full season of The Roundup for Season 7. For this final Season 6 edition, I'm going to be doing a Season Review Roundup. Anything that happened last season is game to appear, even topics I've covered in other editions.
5. Original Sci-Fi Films
This season featured a slew of big budget original sci-fi projects from the writers of Last Resort Films. Mo Buck, James Morgan, Chad Taylor, John Malone and Meirad Tako all wrote original sci-fi film, granted they varied greatly in terms of quality, from the great Scion to the misguided The Two Souls.
4. Roy Horne
The rookie writer made his debut in Season 6 with Perfect Blue, starring Best Actress winner Elle Fanning. I don't have any numbers in front of me to prove this, but I'm pretty sure it must have the most nominations for a debut film. Once again, I did not fact check that, so don't complain if I'm wrong.
3. Alden Ehrenreich
I thought Alden Ehrenreich deserved to win Best Actor for his work in To the White Sea back in Season 5, but he took home the award this season for his haunting turn in Death Dream. He absolutely earned it.
2. Elle Fanning
This young beauty had a hell of a season. She not only starred in the second highest grossing film of the season (Made in Abyss), but she also won the Golden Reel for Best Actress for her stellar work in Perfect Blue.
1. Lon Charles and John Malone
The films from these two absolutely dominated the Golden Reel Awards, especially in terms of nominations with a whopping 25 nominations. They were also writers of all four of the Best Picture nominees. Their dominance in Season 6 is completely unprecedented, and unlikely to ever be repeated.
5. Pete Davidson
Have I mentioned that I hate Pete Davidson? How dare Chad Taylor and a couple of the Lonely Island guys subject us to that colossal douche bag!
4. The Grind's Best Production Design Win
You guys asked for it... While I'm not upset that The Grind took home a Golden Reel Award, I am baffled. As a mere critic, and not a screenwriter, I don't have any real vested interest in who wins, but of the four films nominated for the award, I had The Grind ranked last. It's the only win from the ceremony that caught me completely off-guard.
3. High Society controversy
It's really a shame that such an innocuous remark about the casting of a film led to such fallout. And it's an even bigger shame that some people refuse to let it die even though all the parties that were actually involved are clearly seeking to leave it behind.
2. Jack Ryder
Speaking of which, Jack Ryder earns a spot on my Bottom 5 for Season 6 for purposely trying to stir the pot in order to attract an audience to his podcast.
1. Season 6 Box Office
The season ended on a high note thanks to films like Scion and Made in Abyss, but if the numbers in front of me are accurate, Season 6 was a rough on at the box office: with all-time lows for the studio in Domestic Box Office, Worldwide Box Office and Profit. Only the Foreign Box Office wasn't the lowest in the history of the studio.
Well, that's a wrap on The Roundup for Season 6! See everyone in Season 7...
