Plot: The movie begins in the past, in a coastal town where we see a series of men being executed following violent robberies and murders. It is seen that these men are burned his eyes and then hanged.The screams will say that one day they will come back to torment humanity.
We then move on to our days,there are two girls in the sea, Kathy and Lorena Kay, on a boat while they sunbathe in costume and talk about love problems. Suddenly a great cold and a dense fog seems to wrap the boat and a big sailing ship is approaching them.
Then the scene moves in a photographic studio. A girl, Naomi (Samara Weaving), is in agitation over the disappearance of her roommate and best friend Kathy (Ashley Rickards). Noemi turns to Vanda (Alexandra Daddario), a young heiress and wealthy owner of a fashion atelier where Kathy worked as a model. Vanda reports to Naomi that Kathy has recently signed a contract that will allow her to work for some commercials but, this, provided that this work takes place in an atmosphere of maximum reserve. According to Vanda, Kathy's removal and unavailability are due to this work opportunity. To convince Noemi of the veracity of what was reported, Vanda, connects the girl with Tucker (Garrett Hedlund), the eccentric responsible for the advertising company that Kathy would work for. The man tells Noemi that Kathy is currently isolated on the high seas along with another fashion star, such Lorena Kay (Bella Thorne). The stupid idea was to make a publicity stunt pretending that the girls were lost at sea and find them after a while. Tucker says that the two models would keep Tucker in communication via radio.Noemi, confused and angry at the stupidity begins to shout at Tucker. At that moment Tucker receives a disturbed audio message from Lorena Kay, says that for some time a thick fog has engulfed their boat and that Kathy seems to have vanished into thin air. Furthermore, Lorena says there is a huge old vessel that is cutting them off. From that moment the radio contact is lost leaving the three characters dismayed, especially Naomi. Naomi says that it will cause a scandal and is imprisoned in a room by Jeff (Garret Dillahunt), Tucker's assistant, a bad and unscrupulous man who he also tries to rape Naomi before being stopped by Vanda.
Lorena Kay hears a cry coming from inside the ship and after a moment of hesitation decides to enter inside. The environment is old, rotten and smelly and almost immediately finds Kathy's body horribly disfigured and to which it has been taken away. eyes. Lorena Kay is in shock, and next to Kathy's body is a wooden chest that suddenly starts to move. Inside the case there's a horrible hooded skeleton that starts moving. Scared, she tries to get back to her boat but she is attacked by some figures in the shadows. Another shot shows many other open crates. Meanwhile Tucker's assistant, Jeff, has been sent by helicopter to the area where they should be girls.
Meanwhile, Vanda tells Tucker to meet a professor, a famous expert on ancient boats and marine legends. The professor shows hesitant, but despite Vanda's pressure, he agrees to help Tucker find the two girls again. Meanwhile, Jeff arrives in the fog and after saying the coordinates to his boss his helicopter no longer responds to commands and crashes into the sea.
Tucker, Vanda, Naomi, Prof. Gruber and a student of Gruber, Sergio (Max Irons), get into the sea and reach the established coordinates. They see the debris of Jeff's helicopter and meanwhile the nautical instruments and the compass begin to stop working as they penetrate the fog until they reach the ship. When the mysterious ship is reached, the characters get on the ship and almost immediately, Vanda and Naomi find some pieces of Kathy's clothing and various bloodstains. The group is undecided about what to do and decide to go back, but they seem to no longer find the way.The corridor seems very long and the doors seem a lot. So they discover that the ship seems to travel in a parallel dimension and realize that they are prisoners of a kind of a phantom ship, out of time and space and from which it seems impossible to escape. The ship, in fact, seems a huge place and the characters can no longer find their way back to their boat. Sergio, meanwhile, hears a voice behind a door and is stabbed in the chest.The group notices the lack of Sergio, but the group of survivors suffers the attack of an immense group of rats that flee.The group flees and splits .
Professor Gruber and Tucker find the ship's navigational diary. From this it appears that several years ago the ship was owned by a Dutch man and numerous satanic rites were consumed on board during which various human sacrifices were made. Naomi and Vanda, now separated from the two men, discover that the ship is haunted by skeletons of ghosts' skin that are resurrected from their graves stored in an area in the ship's hold. The two women are surrounded and Naomi succumbs under the enemies who are tearing her apart.
Gruber discovers that inside the ship there is also a great treasure and that the enemies are protecting it. Previously Tucker had found a precious coin and put it in his pocket. Vanda finds an old gun and tries to shoot at the skeletons but can not kill them and runs away causing a fire by setting the fire with its lighter to a barrel of liquor. The fire seems to slow down the enemy and makes Tucker and Gruber find the survivor.
The fire spreads and the old ship begins to crumble and tilt and many skeletons sink into the sea. The ship is sinking and the survivors dive into the sea and the Gruber dies drowned because a skeleton takes it and takes it with him to the depths of the sea. The two sight a small island and begin to swim. Arrived there, exhausted, they are on the beach. Suddenly the fog absorbs the landscape and Tucker sees the open wooden crates carried by the sea on the beach. The two do not have time to get up and are slaughtered by their enemies. Then the camera shows many skeletons that are coming to the small island.
