The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 8 Round 1)

Well, we're into Season 8 now. Not much to say yet on the season, but it is definitely primed to be an exciting ones with yet another new writer joining the fray, as well as new entries in some of our favorite franchises. Now here's The Roundup...
3. Jeremy Davies
I'm a long-time fan of Davies' acting. I've followed his career since David O. Russell's debut film Spanking the Monkey. Getting to see him featured prominently in a film, even a fairly silly horror story like this.

2. Life of a Champion
While the film is not without its issues, it was a solid debut for writer Alex Conn. Most writers don't start out their careers at the studio with an original piece, so that was interesting. I also especially dug the switching of the protagonists - reminded me a lot of the switch after the first act in Psycho.

1. LRF 100
I don't know about you guys, but I am loving the slow reveal of the LRF 100. It's really exciting to see which films have really stuck with the LRF screenwriting community. And aside from the Mackenzie Foy inclusion, I'm not too bothered by the outcomes so far...
3. The Banded Ants 3 - Showdown
The quality of the film isn't what landed it in the bottom three (it's probably the best of the series), but the box office, while strong, wasn't exactly encouraging. It's rarely a good sign if the third film in a series grosses less than the second, especially as budgets tend to grow as a series goes on, which will seriously cut into the potential profits of hypothetical future installments.

2. Dane DeHaan
He's a talented actor - when in the right type of role. The role of a wrestling hanger-on/drug dealer/murderer is not that type of role. He simply lacks the physicality to be an intimidating presence - especially when surrounded by actors like Miles Teller and Dave Franco, who were already bigger than DeHaan, but have clearly done some weight training for their roles. This may have worked if DeHaan's henchman was intimidating, but they went ahead and cast Will Poulter, who may actually be less intimidating than DeHaan.

1. Jack Ryder
Less than one round into the season, and Jack Ryder was already talking out of his ass, complaining about my dislike of his soundtrack choices. Touchy much? He also seems to have never seen a Martin Scorsese movie...
