Reaction: Very solid numbers for such a film. This was the biggest budget Refn has had outside of The Question series - by a lot, so there was a decent amount of risk here. Ultimately, we trusted in the script and in Hardy being a big enough box office draw at this point to bring in audiences.

"Yet another tour-de-force performance from Tom Hardy. He gets to act all over the place with this role, and director Nicolas Winding Refn wisely doesn't reel him in, instead letting Hardy loose."  - Pearce Chayka, Daily Telegraph

"Has there ever been a more award-friendly role in recent memory than that of Tom Hardy as occultist Aleister Crowley. Big name actor? Check. Controversial historical figure? Check. Hip, stylish director? Check."  - Samuel O'Brien, Sight and Sound Magazine

"I honestly wanted to like this one. I've enjoyed much of the work of director Refn, writer Charles and star Hardy, but this one just came across as a bit bland for those involved." - Mark Brown, Austin American-Statesman
