Before and After
Genre: Drama/Fantasy/Romance
Director: David O. Russell
Writer: Jack Slipter
Cast: Miles Teller, Karen Gillan, Dan Stevens, Bill Skarsgard, Jane Levy
Plot: The film starts at a party at the home of a boy named Kevin in which the timid and unlucky Mark (Miles Teller) and his best friend Tom (Bill Skarsgard) feel a little out of place. At some point, while being mocked quite heavily by other guys, they decide to leave. As they leave, Mark's gaze crosses with that of a red-haired girl in a green dress being poured out to drink, Julie (Karen Gillan). For Mark, it's love at first sight. At this point, Tom sees that his friend is stunned and pushes him making him stumble right in front of the girl and the two begin to utter embarrassing words and sentences. After a while the two go out to a quiet place in the garden and with a drink in their hand they lie down on the lawn to look at the stars and talk. At a certain point the eyes meet and while the mouths approach to kiss, the two have a vision equal to a few seconds. In the vision there are the same Mark and Julie dressed in old elegant clothes from the 800 sitting on a lawn that you are looking at with a sweet look. After a few seconds everything returns to normal. After a moment of bewilderment they realize that the two had the same vision, Mark is almost excited, he says that he believes in the paranormal he says he always believed in reincarnation. That night they both realized that they had already loved each other in a past life. Julie, unlike Mark, seemed a little confused by the situation initially. The two, however, continue to resolve themselves continuously, they already seem in love. Soon after Tom arrives and starts joking with them. At the end of the evening the two give another appointment. The next evening they go to a park, even this evening is made up of long silences and many looks. At a certain point, like the previous evening, the two have a vision in which they walk hand in hand in the middle of an avenue with peach trees in bloom. At the end of the happy and sweet vision, the two finally kiss.
Months go by and the two are more and more in love and united, no big quarrels and no problems. Meanwhile, Tom has embarked on a love affair with Julie's sister, a nice and kind girl who works in a flower shop named Catherine (Jane Levy). The visions of Mark and Julie of their past love are regular and they decided not to reveal them to anyone, they would all take them for crazy. One evening during a dinner on Catherine's birthday, Mark and Julie tried to delve a little into the subject with Catherine and Tom without much success.
On a sunday sunday, during a long trip near a lake, the couple is walking hand in hand. Julie looks a little thoughtful and strange while Mark tries to make jokes to raise them to morals, without success. The girl says that it still seems absurd that they managed to find each other and Mark mentions a Chinese legend that says "all people are united with their soul mate by a red thread since birth, all these people are destined to meet". Julie smiles and looks calmer. As the couple embraces, a man named James (Dan Stevens) approaches with a visibly altered mood to the girl with phrases that say "Why did you do it?" "Why did you kill me?" As soon as Julie sees that the man gets stuck, she seems to have a deja-vu. Meanwhile, Mark tries to calm the man, taking him for a drunken fool. The man continues to say that Julie killed him with a dagger on his back. The girl screams the name "James" and the man stops and begins to apologize saying he is sick or sometimes he says things he does not think and runs away. Mark is confused as Julie says with a tear on her face that she wants to go home. The couple takes the car and returns home. Julie doesn't say words for the whole trip. Once at home, Julie says that in a past life she and James had married, he beat her and she killed him with a knife on his back. Mark was angry and says that nothing happens by chance and that the matter will have to be resolved. Julie, almost with a different personality, says they will have to go back to the same place tomorrow, James will be there. Despite the bad premonition, Mark accompanies his girlfriend where the meeting had taken place the day before. Initially there is no one and Mark tries to convince Julie to leave that place and as long as they discuss the meaning of destiny, James arrives. James says he will have to talk to Julie alone, otherwise it will be difficult to reveal the inner part of himself. Mark objects, but Julie says with a firm voice that she has everything under control and asks Mark to go and sit on a bench a hundred yards away. Mark reluctantly starts at the bench and then watches James and Julie talk and gesticulate for almost an hour. At one point the two greeted each other and Julie returned to Mark in a calmer mood and headed home. The next day, Mark, while he's at work, receives a call from Catherine who says that Julie seems to have disappeared, has not made an appointment and cannot contact her. After taking the car and making several turns around the city, at a certain point a strange force inside him leads him to an old abandoned building on the periphery. Mark rushes in, there is a terrifying silence. The only sounds are heard only behind a closed door. Mark tries to knock and starts yelling Julie's name. After a while, James opens a crack in the door, initially saying that the girl is not there. Mark, angry, starts a fight with James. At one point, James claims to have given another appointment to clarify the situation and that now everything is over and that what had happened in the past was not right. Mark rushes in, there is a terrifying silence. At this point Mark draws a gun and points it at James. James says in tears that he was forced and that he had to end up like this. Finally he says it's downstairs. The two go down the stairs, Julie is lying on the floor with a knife on her back (as she had done with James in a past life). As soon as he sees Julie lying on the ground and shouting his name, Mark turns to the murderer and shoots myriad bullets at James, killing him. Mark kneels and cries near the poor girl. After a while the boy sits on a corner and is about to shoot himself in the head when he hears Julie's voice saying he has to go and goes on to say sweetly that if he kills himself he will have to make amends in later lives and after a long talk they meet in the next life. He says that from now on, Mark will be an extraordinary person who will have the task of helping souls pass into the afterlife. With tears in his eyes, with the advice of Julie's voice, he sets the crime scene by removing everything that can be connected to him and moves away from that place.
Some months pass and Mark seems to start accepting the loss of his beloved, even with the help of Catherine and Tom. From time to time Julie went to see Mark in his dreams and this comforted him. Furthermore, Mark's life has changed, since then he has seen supernatural presences and has tried to help the various souls trapped in the earth. The years pass and we see aged Mark being on a hospital bed as he thinks back to his life with an old photo of Julie. Mark is now exhaling his last breaths and the screen slowly turns white as Mark smiles.
The film ends in a not so distant future in which we see that a boy talks with a futuristic phone and lightly hits the car of a girl who was standing at a traffic light. The camera is a little out of focus and you can see that they get out of their cars and look at each other with a smile.
