Reaction: This one was always going to be a risky bet: a film with no big name actors about a celebrity nobody likes. We tried to minimize the risk by keeping the budget small and focusing the marketing budget on internet ads instead of the more costly television ads. In the end it wasn't quite enough to make it work financially though.
"The William Hung Story is an ill-conceived project that does not seem to have a point as we never learn anything of importance about William Hung that couldn't be gleamed from a cursory glance at Wikipedia." - Mark Rawls, Seattle Times
"William Hung once embarrassed himself on national television. That's his entire claim to fame. Not only is that moment glossed over pretty quickly in this film, but just about everything is glossed over with a lack of detail." - Clark Davis, JoBlo.com
"The William Hung Story is barely a story. There don't ever seem to be any stakes for Hung as a character, and the film tries frame Hung's farce of a musical career as an inspirational story, complete with an entirely fictional suicide contemplation scene." - Michael Wilmington, Rolling Stone
Rated PG-13 for some language and brief thematic material.
