Reaction: This ended up probably too niche of a project to break the studio's run of box office bombs for animated films. With that in mind, we did try to keep the costs as low as possible, with the film being our least expensive animated film to date. It was also a rare PG-13 animated film, which have a notoriously poor record at the box office (9, Beowulf, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Eight Crazy Nights, Cool World, etc.).
"I'm not sure about the audience for this film. It's too dark and um... French, for younger audiences, while probably not dark enough for most adult audiences. There were clearly good intentions behind the scenes, but the film seems to have cornered itself with its ambitions." - Brian Edelstein, Time Out
"A great deal of care clearly went into developing the characters and the world of the film, even if it feels too long at points. The result being a more adult-oriented animated adventure that may be too demanding for most audiences, but I certainly enjoyed it." - Lisa Winger, Newsday
"Tim Burton's latest animated feature struggles with its pacing at times and probably won't be of much interest to children, but for those adults who enjoy animated films this one should hit the mark." - Glenn Howard, Total Film
Rated PG-13 for violence and thematic material
