Interview: Giovanni Garcia

In this edition of Interview, Last Resort Films president Phil Dolan sits down with one of the studio's newer writers, Giovanni Garcia (Dragon Ball: The Wrath of the Demon King, The Mask), to discuss his latest film, Zombielove, and his experience working with the studio so far.

PD: Last season you received your first Golden Reel nomination with Dragon Ball: Wrath of the Demon King for Most Wanted Sequel. Are there plans for a sequel?

GG:  First of all I just wanted to say I am very excited and humbled to have my first interview on LRF. There are definite plans for a sequel and further films. Dragon Ball is one of my all-time favorite Television shows, and to be able to work in this amazing sandbox of characters and worlds and to be able to do the show justice is truly amazing. I am currently working on the sequel at the moment and I hope to address and fix the criticisms that the first film received and make a better film in the process that will be accessible to both hardcore fans and the average filmgoer.

PD: You are one of the newer writers at the studio, with Zombielove being just your fourth film. How have you enjoyed working with LRF so far?

GG: I have loved my time working in LRF so far. I especially love the creative freedom that LRF gives me to run wild with my stories no matter how crazy or ridiculous they are. I also love the fact that everyone in LRF gives each other feedback and thoughts on their stories and ideas both positive and negative, and from Writers, Critics, and LRF head people alike.

PD: Zombielove is a bit of a genre departure from your previous films. What inspired you to write the film?

GG: I wanted to write a much smaller scale story than my previous movies which have all been very effects and action-heavy without focusing too much on the characters themselves and I wanted to work on my main weakness as a writer. I am a big fan of films like Shaun of the Dead and the Zombieland series, and I love the way that those films balance comedy, horror, and a tiny sprinkle of drama with ease and style. I wrote the film when I was in a very confusing and somewhat dark place in my life and all though the genre and tone of the film are very over the top I strongly relate to the character of Andrew and his loneliness and feeling of not belonging in a crazy world.

PD: So far you have an 50/50 split between original stories and adaptations, are there any properties out there that you want to adapt next?

GG: Outside of my Dragon Ball series, I do not really have any adaption ideas lined up at the moment, as I am focusing on more original ideas, but I would love to do something inside the Grand Theft Auto series or do a DCU Movie one day.

PD: Since a lot of the audience doesn't know very well yet, what are some of your favorite LRF releases?
GG: I love the Booster Gold series that Chad Taylor has done, they have such a fun energy to them and are easily some of the most genuinely fun in not artificial way movies I have come across. I also enjoy Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Flash Gordon, Time Passages and Nobody.
