In Development


Faster, Higher, Stronger: Tony Hale ("Veep", Bad Education), Diogo Morgado ("The Messengers", Son of God), Stephan James (A Following, Tenth Circle) and Jovan Adepo (Scion 3, Overlord) have signed on to join star Matt Damon in the sports comedy from Steven Soderbergh depicting the comically inept 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis. Adepo and James will play human models from the local history museum who decide to enter the marathon, Hale will play an American entrant, while Morgado will play a Latin competitor. Mo Buck penned the script.

No Laughing Matter: Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep", Downhill), Marisa Tomei (The Raven, Nobody) and Billie Lourd (Every Secret Thing, Booksmart) have joined the latest dark comedy from directors Joel & Ethan Coen and writer Chad Taylor. Louis-Dreyfus will play the wife of Jason Bateman's character. Tomei will play the love interest of Glenn Howerton's character. Lourd will play the rebellious daughter of Bateman and Louis-Dreyfus.

Zatanna: After weeks of media speculation and very public hints on social media, it is offical that Aubrey Plaza (Drugstore Perfume, Buried Memories) has been cast as DC Comics heroine Zatanna Zatara. Plaza's deal reportedly includes potential sequels as well as other DC Comics Universe projects. Niki Caro (Mulan, The Hazel Wood) has been tapped to direct the project, which was written by Jimmy Ellis (Should've Been Here, Lady Red).

Alien: Out of the Shadows: The first film of Season 17 is going to be a big one, with the latest edition of the Alien anthology series. This one will have a star-studded cast led by Claire Foy (Asylum, God of War), Luke Evans (The Birds, The Phantom of the Opera), Sylvia Hoeks (Tail, The Girl in the Spider's Web) and Karl Urban (Hunter, Skyrim). In a decision that may prove controversial, the film brings back the character of Ellen Ripley, this time played by Claire Foy, as the film reportedly is set shortly after the events of the first Alien film. Evans will play the chief officer of a mining ship that Ripley finds herself on. Hoeks will play the ship's medical officer and Urban will play the ship's pilot. The film is written by Carl Flimmer (Resident Evil 3, Aliens vs. Predator: The First Hunt) and directed by Rupert Wyatt (Star Trek: Enterprise, The Last of Us) in his first film for the studio since Season 4.

A Life: Also due out in the first round of next season will be the smaller drama, A Life. The film is set to star Jesse Eisenberg (Bright Neon Lights, High Society) and Jonah Hill (Missoula, Bright Neon Lights). Eisenberg will play a teacher and aspiring playwright, while Hill will play will play his best friend. Ang Lee (The Great Beyond, The Secret History) has been set as director. The film is based on a script by Alex Conn (Heights, Morrissey and Marr).

The King of Hearts:
The first round of Season 17 will also see the historical pairing of legendary movie stars Tom Cruise (Heights, The Andromeda Strain) and Tom Hanks (Cold, Hiroshima). The film will focus on the professional relationship and rivalry between two innovative heart surgeons. It is based on the true story of Dr. Denton Cooley, played by Cruise, who is credited as performing the first artificial heart replacement surgery. Bennett Miller (Pressing Luck, Shake Hands with the Devil) has been hired to direct the film based on a script by Chad Taylor (Oklahoma!, Gambit and Rogue).
