Welcome to A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! This segment may evolve a bit as it goes along, and I am open to suggestions, but the general idea is to take a second look at an older LRF film with a fresh set of eyes.
For the first segment, I will use those fresh set of eyes to take A Second Look at Girl/Girl, written by Chad Taylor and directed by Elizabeth Hittman. Girl/Girl, released in Season 6, tells the story of a young woman (Grace Van Patten) in college who enters the world of camgirls to earn some extra money. In that world she begins a relationship of sorts with a more experienced camgirl (Ana de Armas). Alden Ehrenreich had a meaty supporting role as de Armas' abusive boyfriend, in his lone supporting role in an LRF production.
Reviews for the film were mixed at best with some praise going to the cast and the glimpse at the camgirl world, but some critics also felt that the film became to a bit too cute and convenient by the end. Taking a second look at Girl/Girl now, I will say that the film is definitely better than I remembered. The film features a trio of interesting performances from Ehrenreich, Van Patten and De Armas. The trio are all very believable in their roles. On the negative side, I do have to agree with the original thought that the film ends very neatly and there isn't a lot of conflict in the relationship between Van Patten and De Armas (outside of external conflict from Ehrenreich's character).
Now, at the end of each second look I will provide my original grade for the film, and a new grade (it it's changed at all).
Original Grade: C-
New Grade: B
