Reaction: Not only was this sequel more expensive than the first film due to talent contracts, but it then grossed drastically less both at both the domestic and foreign box office. Honestly, with that big of a box office drop, we're lucky the film didn't lose more money.

"While the music is once again good in this sequel, the plot itself pales in comparison to first film. The actions of the characters are completely baffling at times, and the highlight of the first film - Luke Evans as The Phantom - doesn't even feel like the same character this time around." - Brian Edelstein, Time Out

"Every once in a while, a sequel comes along that completely flops when trying to recreate the magic that made the first film work. You can now count Mask of the Phantom on that list.  The musical is nonsensical at its best and ridiculous at its worst. To be fair to the filmmakers, the musical this film is based on wasn't particularly well-received either, so they were clearly trying to ice-skate uphill with this one." - Glenn Howard, Total Film

"The drama of the story doesn't particularly work, but the cast perform their roles well and the music is good. At least this film film isn't littered by seemingly stunt casting like Seth MacFarlane and Tom Jones." - Clark Davis, JoBlo.com

Rated PG-13 for some violence and thematic material
