The box office was much better this round after a couple major flops in Round 2. Here's The Roundup....
3. Box OfficeAfter the rough box office of last round (aside from Batgirl), the bigger box office in Round 4 was a nice sight.
2. Man Made Machine
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II felt a bit too cold and stoic for his lead role in Man Made Machine. This led to moments where he and the much more energetic Margot Robbie didn't really feel like a great big-screen pair. Man Made Machine is not without its fair share of problems, but the script and direction help make everything effortlessly entertaining. I look forward to an inevitable sequel.
1. Skin
I was surprised by Skin. Some could argue that it moved too slowly and didn't have enough of a payoff. I understand why many may feel that way, but Langford and Peters sell their roles so well that those issues didn't bother me at all.
3. Soundtracks
Only one soundtrack so far - and none this round. I believe the season will be more soundtrack heavy in the second half, but it may be a weak crowd.
2. Survive the Night
The story itself of Survive the Night wasn't terrible, and the casting of the leads was good, but the film completely fell apart when it was revealed that Rosario Dawson is supposed to be the GRANDMOTHER of Anya Chalotra's character. The details need to work in a thriller if the film is going to ultimately work. I'm also not sure about the inclusion of Noir in the genre. There wasn't really anything noirish about this one.
1. Novel Adaptation Curse
Two novel flops already this season (adding on to the three in a row that ended last season, making five novel adaptation flops in a row currently), and there are still a whopping SIX novel adaptations still on the schedule for this season - No Promises in the Wind, Troll Mountain, Bunny, Revival, Nineteen Minutes & The Watsons Go To Birmingham - so things might get worse before they get better as there don't appear to be any obvious hits in that bunch.
