Reaction: Letters puts an end to Billy Cruder's streak of profitable films at three, becoming his first flop since He Kills in Season 17. Letters is also now the 7th film this season to lose money at the box office (out of 14 films).

"Letters feels like an idea that isn't fully realized - more like the first half of a horror story. We don't see the monster until the final moments, with Billy Cruder's script teasing the audience throughout. But by ending with it, completely robs the story of its possible payoff." - Stephen Ridley, Boston Globe

"Writer Billy Cruder has a premise without a complete story with Letters. It takes so long for the scares to start coming that I had given up. It was too little, too late. The story needed to give us more, earlier on. The rules of the mailbox and the story are also a bit too vague. Some tighter pacing could have helped a lot, as things move far too slowly." - Matt Carson, Arizona Republic

"McKenzie continues her case as a solid lead with Tomei helping carry what is a weak script. I think the idea is something to work with, but it's not scary enough to go with it. If the movie was tense enough, it'd be a new version of a haunted house film without the played-out twist, which ruins everything. But what we get is something that seems to be the new typical horror that, while avoiding jump scenes, suffers the worst sin a horror movie could do... being dull." - Alexis Gladwyn, San Jose Mercury News

Rated R for violence, frightening images and thematic material
