With the long-awaited sequel to Namor the Sub-Mariner finally due out in theaters, I decided to take the opportunity to take a second look at the first film. My memory of the first Namor film is that it was one of the better LRF superhero films, with big action and a unique take on a superhero character. The film is still one of the only superhero projects to win a writing award (Best Adaptation) and receive a Best Picture nomination.
Looking at the film now, it still holds up as a really good superhero action story. It does have a few faults that I maybe didn't notice as much the first time around. The film is definitely a bit too long at times. This is something that writer John Malone has gotten better at over the seasons since. In addition to that, the supporting characters never really get a chance to stand out and shine, aside from maybe Tom Hanks' extended cameo, and the Atlantean culture felt a little vague at times. It's still really good (for all the same reasons), but I don't think I can give it quite as high of a score this time around.
