The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 27 Round 7)

The rocky box office continues a bit in Round 7, although things may be looking up going forward. Here's The Roundup....

3. Box Office
This round didn't really have a blockbuster release, but at least two of the three films made a profit. With three superhero films spread out over the final three rounds of the season, things are looking up though.

2. Anastasia
I feel like this film was the best possible live action adaptation of the animated film that could be made while still keeping the film mostly safe for family audiences. It was nice to see Kiernan Shipka finally get a star vehicle that utilizes her charm - plus a good female leading role is always a welcome sight in LRF.

1. Territory
Territory might be my favorite film of the season so far. I was actually surprised that it didn't earn a higher Metascore than 83 (I was expecting 85-90). Maybe other audiences are still getting used to the gruffer, serious Vince Vaughn, but I was already sold long ago. His collaborations with director S. Craig Zahler are all great and each show different sides of Vaughn's talents - Territory included. If you haven't seen it already, do yourself a favor and check it out.

2. Profits
The box office is still in a bit of a rut even with two of the three films this round turning a profit. The films that are losing money aren't just losing a few million, they're losing tens of millions. This round the losses of The Maid nearly completely cancelled out the success of Anastasia.

1. The Maid
Aside from a couple of decent casting choices, I found The Maid to be pretty much a complete misfire. The characters, the plotting, the central mystery - none of it worked for a film in my opinion. The concept is good (murder in a hotel and the maid becomes a suspect), but clearly this is a novel that needed to be reworked in order to be a successful movie, and that didn't happen in pre-production or filming here.
