Reaction: The history of sports films in LRF is spotty at best, but we were hoping that the casting of multiple popular stars could help the film find a bigger audience than it managed.
"Tomato Can felt like a by the books boxing film, until the mid-way point where it turned into a story of grief and guilt. While some characters play out as caricatures, Alicia Vikander’s Jenny was great. The real standout for me in this film however, is Derek Cianfrance’s direction, the fight scenes were great, but the quieter more nuanced scenes are where he shined. Jenna Ortega continues with her good performances. Tomato Can is a good film with more layers than meets the eye." - Sam Nestera, The Daily Telegraph
"The latest offering by duo Mo Buck and Derek Cianfrance, in top-notch fashion, packs an emotional punch in their film. With impeccable craftsmanship and pacing, Vikander shines and proves her worth as a great actress worth watching. The supporting cast impresses, including notable performances by Jenna Ortega, Jharrel Jerome, and the exceptional Nicolas Cage." - Hope Williamson, The Age (Australia)
"Tomato Can has some elements that work: the script is well-plotted, Derek Cianfrance directs the film deftly, and Alicia Vikander brings a lot of vulnerable intensity to her role. However, the film is almost completely hampered by the complete miscasting of Jenna Ortega, who simply is not capable at this point in her career to play a mother/boxer. I found this issue so distracting that I really had a difficult time with the project as a whole." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press
Rated PG-13 for boxing violence, language and thematic material
