Reaction: While we were worried about the relative obscurity of the source material, we felt comfortable giving the film a relatively high budget due to the involvement of star Taron Egerton and director Joss Whedon. Between this and Robin Hood, Taron Egerton's ability to open a film now has to be considered iffy at best. The film performed really well overseas, but unfortunately the studio gets a smaller percentage of the ticket sales from foreign theaters.
"Taron Egerton is solid in the lead role, even if it is under-developed, but the rest of the cast does not fair so well. Elijah Wood feels terribly miscast as the mecha-piloting Subject Y, while the usually solid Malin Akerman has the thankless role of Egerton's love interest (with their age difference being slightly distracting)." - Stephen Ridley, Boston Globe
"This is a film I wanted to like. Joss Whedon usually delivers entertaining films, but this one was hard to follow and seemed more interested in having Taron Egerton fighting aliens than actually telling a story." - Tim Greer, L.A. Weekly
"Evangelion is loaded with action, some good, some bad. The premise has potential, but is probably a bit too generic at this point without better world-building." - Glenn Howard, Total Film
