Reaction: Definitely a letdown at the box office. The subject matter isn't particularly marketable, while the film's lengthy running time lessened the number of showings the film could have each day.

"There is strong writing on the screen, and Taylor Sheridan shows that he is a legitimate director, not just a writer, but the film has one fatal flaw. It's hard to feel the necessary sympathy for the characters due to their actions and just how unlikable every character is." - Sean Sullivan, Financial Times

"The plotting of the film is pretty well done, even if there's a lot of extra material that probably should have ended up on the cutting room floor. It still works though because of the direction and the strong work from the actors on-screen, especially Mortensen and Bernthal." - Samuel O'Brien, Sight and Sound Magazine

"Despite the extra subplots and characters, H.G. Hansen has delivered a fairly moving script that doesn't judge its characters, but rather lets the audience make up their own mind about them." - Janelle Arbor, Vogue
