Interview: APJ
In this edition of Interview, Last Resort Films president Phil Dolan sits down for an interview with writer and DC Comics Universe overseer APJ (Hawkworld, Uncharted 3) to discuss his latest film, The Birds, as well as the future of the studio's DC Comics Universe slate....
PD: A Hitchcockian horror remake is probably not what audiences were expecting for your latest film. Why the change of pace?
APJ: Believe it or not, I never set out to be the DC Comics guy or the video game adaptation guy. My first film was not either of those types, but I find that the DC adaptations take me so long to write, that it just become my main focus. I decided to go a season without a DC Comics Universe film so that I could do something else, and a remake of The Birds was always something I wanted to tackle.
PD: So why remake The Birds?
APJ: I have a strong appreciation for what Hitchcock accomplished with his original film, but it now feels much more dated than most of his filmography. Films like North by Northwest, Vertigo or Psycho are still just as exciting and thrilling as they ever were, but for whatever reason The Birds doesn't share that quality. It has a bit of a cheese factor now that I highly doubt Hitchcock ever intended.
PD: With Giovanni Garcia's The Flash in theaters, does that mean we'll ever see something like Flashpoint?
APJ: I would strongly say no to that. Not only does that appear to be what Warner Bros. is doing with the character, but myself and many of the other writers to work on films in the DC Comics Universe have strived to make sure that the films are of a shared universe. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a multi-verse in LRF's DC Comics Universe.
PD: What's next for you?
APJ: Next season I have a couple DC projects that I'm excited about. One being a team-up of some of the more supernatural characters in the DC Comics Universe (Justice League Dark), and the other being a film featuring the Green Lantern Corps that I'm hoping will up the cosmic quotient in the Universe. After that you can expect to see new films featuring Green Arrow and Plastic Man. There will also of course be a fourth Uncharted film sooner rather than later.
