Reaction: Just when it was looking like only superhero films were going to make any money this season, we now have two surprise blockbusters in a row with The Birds and Oklahoma! Clearly audiences were interested in these new takes on such old properties and both seem to have benefited from strong word-of-mouth as they did not have huge marketing budgets.
"The film took Broadway's queue and went with a darker, more serious and morose version of the classic musical, which works well for the most part, but it's really Billy Magnussen's charming, charismatic lead performance that ties everything together." - Brian Edelstein, Time Out
"Personally, I'm not a big fan of the taking of a more scaled-down and dark approach to this particular material. It resulted in an odd tonality for me as an audience member, especially the scenes toward the end of the movie." - Charles Triano, Los Angeles Times
"Director Damien Chazelle and writer Chad Taylor have assembled quite the ensemble cast for this production. Chazelle obviously knows his way around a musical, which certainly helps when bringing this tale to life. It somehow manages to feel authentic and theatrical at the same time, which I found impressive." - Charles Yost, Oregonian
Rated PG-13 for some violence and sexuality
