Plot: The film begins with the camera showing a large building that looks like a research station or something. The story begins in the evening with a man kissing a woman in front of a closet in a kind of storage room telling the woman that everything will be fine and be quiet. He has a white coat with the name Dr. Stack written on the plate (Sean Bean) while she is Dr. Ellis (Neve Campbell). The two leave the room and head in the opposite direction greeting each other with a smile. A guard sees the scene on the monitor of the security cameras and laughs to himself thinking that they had had sex in the storage room . In the meantime, Dr. Stack puts some cotton in his ears. The pclosetlace doesn't seem to have many people inside because of the late hour. The woman walks gently to the entrance and talks to some guards who were there. They reciprocate by greeting the woman. At one point she distracts the men by taking them to another room saying that she had brought some treats as Dr. Stack enters a completely white room where there is a sleeping girl. The man strokes her hair for a moment and takes her in his arms and wraps her in a blanket. Then leave the room by walking quickly along the corridors, being careful not to be seen. At one point, near the exit, he found himself face to face with another researcher who had finished working late. Stack begs him not to say anything, that that was the right thing to do, but the other doctor sounds the alarm before Stack can push him to hit the wall. When the alarm starts ringing, Dr. Ellis tries to keep the guards busy for as long as possible by locking the room door while the guards order them to move or they would shoot. Shortly thereafter, a pistol shot hits the woman in the leg. She falls to the ground and remains on her knees screaming with all the breath in Stack's body to run away. Unfortunately other guards had joined the doctor and were aiming with the pistols. Dr. Stack looks around thinking about what to do. Suddenly the girl woke up and yawning. The girl stared at the doctor for a moment and then turns her head to see all the guards with guns pointed at her direction. The girl has a confused face, does not understand the situation and began to cry and scream incessantly. The scream is terrifying, men begin to plug their ears while the various windows and bulbs begin to explode creating great confusion and Stack manages to escape while Dr. Ellis rejoices. Shortly afterwards a young black man dressed elegantly with a tattoo on his neck approaches the woman saying that the escape will not have much luck and that soon they will find the fugitives. Meanwhile, the injured Dr. Ellis, still on his knees, spits in the man's face. The man laughs amused and cleans himself with the handkerchief in his pocket. At this point he puts the handkerchief in his pocket, points the gun towards the woman's forehead and shoots killing her. The camera shows the blood that creates a swimming pool on the floor. So he calls someone to clean up that mess.
20 Years Later:
Two men wearing biohazard plastic coveralls who work as cleaners in a house that is a crime scene after the police have left the scene. One of the men, Elvis (Tom Holland), continuously vomits in a bucket and it is understood that he is probably new and has no experience in the job while Leonard (Diego Luna) calmly uses a handful of paper towels to dry a large pool of blood congested on the floor. At that moment Jess (Molly Gordon), Elvis' girl, arrives, dressed extravagantly with high heels and bright colors. She says she went there to bring lunch to her boyfriend, making him ashamed in front of his experienced colleague. Leonard's cell phone rings and Elvis answers the phone for Leonard and makes him talk because Leonard's gloves are all stained with blood. While listening to the details of their next cleaning job, Elvis makes the mistake of looking at the crime scene for a moment and almost fainted and drops the phone to the ground in the middle of the blood while Jess screams and laughs amused showing a sense of a bit macabre humor. Leonard kneels calmly and bends his ear near the phone on the floor to finish receiving the address for the next job. He finishes talking and announces to Elvis that he will be at lunchtime while Jess snorts because the lunch he had prepared for Elvis would not have been eaten. The two men are responsible for cleaning up after murders, deaths and other generally unpleasant events and we observe Leonard who collects the last remains in a bucket.
After the trip by car Elvis is standing on the edge of a small lake in a wooded area. The wind blows and the boy sways slightly in the breeze with his eyes closed. Leonard approaches him and tells him that they have found the body of an old man and they will have to clean that place and thanks him for temporarily replacing his colleague who injured his ankle despite not being a suitable job for him. Elvis tells Leonard that he is a friend of the family and that he has helped them in the past by giving them money when his parents were out of work and he had to repay somehow. Then Elvis asks Leonard what happened to the old man. Leonard says the police only found half of the body as it is located in a remote area with wild animals around and probably wolves or some other animal will have scattered the remains.
While cleaning the little house by the lake, the two men find a sort of trap door. Elvis, driven by curiosity, opens it despite Leonard inviting him not to do it and they go down the stairs to reach a real underground level. These rooms are dark, moldy and a little sinister and when they break through an apparently sealed door they discover a laboratory. Shelves and tables are full of strange objects in jars and expired or spoiled canned food, and the walls are covered with curious drawings and images. In the room there is a bathtub filled with a white liquid with machinery with cables coming in. Leonard receives a phone call and tells the boy not to touch anything because he would then speak to the police after. Elvis, meanwhile, is intrigued by the situation and starts walking around the room.
While walking, accidentally touches an old tape recorder in which he hears the voice of a man telling someone to calm down before suddenly hearing screams and disturbing voices until he hears silence and an unknown word uttered by the man. Meanwhile Leonard leaves the house and answers the phone. It is the hospital, the doctor tells him that he must go to the hospital as soon as possible because the tests he has been waiting for have arrived. Leonard strongly insists on knowing the results immediately. Given the insistence, the doctor regretfully reports that there is no good news. Leonard is informed that he has cancer in an advanced and very aggressive state and seems incurable. When he hears those words Leonard ends the call while the doctor is still talking and then leans against the machine and starts to breathe long sighs with closed eyes. Then he opens the door and takes some pads that are in a small bag in his glove compartment. Elvis,in the meantime, realizes that when he heard the strange word, an imperceptible movement occurred in the white liquid. Therefore Elvis calls Leonard several times as he approaches the tub with a little fear. Suddenly a young naked woman (Daisy Ridley) emerges, tearing forcefully the tube that entered his mouth before passing out and collapsing on the edge of the tub. Elvis approaches with a fearful step calling the girl in a low voice and while she is about to touch her to see if she is well, the girl's eyes open. Meanwhile Leonard goes down to the basement, walks through the door and is surprised to find the scene where a naked girl holds Elvis by the neck. Leonard tries to calm her by introducing himself and explaining why they are there. Meanwhile, the girl looks around with a mixture of fear and anger. At this point Leonard takes an old sweater that was in the room asking him if he recognizes him and asks to leave his friend. At this point she frees Elvis who falls to the ground, takes the colored sweater and sits in a corner holding it tight. Elvis has a frightened and confused face while Leonard seems to be more determined and calm. Shortly after, holding the sweater in her hand, the girl seems to be hungry and starts opening some cans of food while listening to the two boys talking. Leonard goes by car to get some bottles of water and something to eat and behind him we see something strange in the trees. Meanwhile, Elvis throws clothes at the girl keeping distance. There are several boxes in the room with the name "Tail" and the girl looks up when Elvis names that name. Elvis tries to insert a cassette into the old tape recorder and the voice tells of experiments, which he also discovered that the girl also has a kind of sisters, but she is the only one who has completely evolved. In the meantime,Leonard is going down the stairs and has an episode in which he feels bad and is likely to pass out, but soon after he feels better and curses God in a low voice for his illness. When the girl hears the voice in the tape recordere she is saddened visibly and runs away hiding under an old bed. The boy follows her and tries to joke but the girl does not seem to be able to speak but at some point she begins to sing a beautiful melody. At this point the boy lies down on the ground smiling and begins to look at the girl intoning the same melody and telling her not to worry and that they won't hurt her. So he tries to ask how long the girl has been there. Suddenly the girl snaps and takes Elvis's face in her hands and shows her memories to Elvis. A little confused images of the girl's life follow each other. You can see images of a laboratory in which they experiment, of the escape from that laboratory, Dr. Stack who jokes and plays with her, the one who prepares the tub full of that white liquid, she who hears the voices that call her and runs away into the woods before being blocked by the doctor and taking her home and immobilizing him in a bed and cutting something with a knife while screaming. Finally another scene in which she is immersed in the white liquid after being sedated while the doctor says that she knows that they are calling her but she must not go because there are also people in the outside world who want to hurt her. After the girl removes her hands from Elvis' face, the boy runs away to the other room while the girl follows him and indicates a kind of safe before starting to play comically with a gas mask found on a shelf. Elvis opens the safe and sees a jar with a tail cut inside it and Elvis almost falls to the ground in fright. The girl is amused by the boy's reaction. At that moment Leonard also arrives with the supplies found in the car. He also says that for some reason the phone line is out of order. While Elvis goes upstairs to pee, Leonard seems to be having another malaise for a few moments. Leonard puts his hand on the wall and begins to cough loudly and spits blood on a handkerchief, but after a while he recovers. The girl watches the scene carefully. In the meantime, something seems to be approaching outside the home. Elvis comes back down. Elvis and Leonard sit on the floor and talking asking questions about the girl (for example how old she is, whose tail it is ...) as they watch her play with the bottle of water and eagerly eat the sandwiches that Leonard had recovered. In a quiet moment, Leonard reveals to the boy that he has very aggressive lung cancer and is unlikely to recover. At that moment the girl starts looking around and starts to get nervous when strange beeps are heard outside the hut and footsteps are heard. The girl closes the door and takes refuge under the table and soon someone tries to break the door while Elvis tries to keep it closed, helped by Leonard who has another cough and a blood attack before passing out shortly after. Meanwhile, Elvis is also about to lose consciousness because a type of gas is dispersed in the room. At this point the girl approaches him transmitting other memories of how they lived in the woods and how they hid. Also watch a scene where one night in the woods was called by a strange girl-like creature with hair and a hairy face with a long tail before being blocked by Stack. Then you see the Dr.Stack who says she is special and who knows how to do things that are impossible for humans and you see her keep in her hand the flowers by now wilted before magically resuming their bright colors and then you see her move her tail while reading a book.
Meanwhile men in gas mask suits break through the door and enter the room while Elvis falls unconscious. Then we see a mix of doctors and soldiers and a doctor called Peterson (Rufus Sewell) interrogates near the cabin Elvis (while Leonard is still unconscious) asking where the girl was. He says their tools say "Tail" is there but they can't find it. Elvis doesn't respond and says he won't say anything despite being beaten in the meantime. His face is swollen and a streak of blood falls from his nose. He is also blindfolded. Shortly afterwards a woman, Tanya (Sylvia Hoeks) observes the situation with sunglasses by tapping the long nails on the dashboard. She snorts from inside the black van where she is sitting and continues to look at the clock. At one point he takes off his sunglasses showing his glacial gaze and orders some men to take her there. A hooded girl (who we intend to be Elvis' girl) is led next to Elvis. Elvis is desperate to hear his girlfriend so scared but says he doesn't know where the creature can be. Tanya approaches with her emerald green dress and tells the two boys that they are therefore useless and immediately kills poor Jess with a stab in the abdomen while she lowers the bandage from Elvis' eyes. Jess collapses to the ground as the blood begins to come out very loudly while Elvis is desperate and screams about what happened. Peterson takes it out on Tanya saying it wasn't necessary. Tanya turns around and tells the man he knows how the Dahlia organization works and if he wants to end up being killed too, just say so. Right now the woman receives a phone call telling her there are problems in Hollow Creek and leaves Peterson there to get there. Paterson tells the upset boy that Tanya lost her entire family in Russia when she was a child due to an unspecified creature and from that day she has only a spirit of revenge inside her. At that moment Leonard also begins to regain consciousness. Meanwhile, several men are looking for "Tail" at home. At the same time, externally, Peterson says to Elvis that she may seem like a kind and defenseless girl, but that she has unimaginable powers. With these words in the background we see "Tail" emerge silently from the tub full of white liquid where she had been hiding all that time with a decidedly angry face and look. At that moment you can see the scar where he had a tail in the past. Then she wipes her lips with her tongue and gives an evil smile. She comes out of the water quickly hitting a soldier who was patrolling that room. She quickly takes the head of an enemy making it almost detach from the body and immediately kills another one with a bite in the throat. Some soldiers shoot but she is very fast, she seems an infallible hunter. Like a terrible predator, she wanders around the house and kills all the soldiers one after the other with violence.
Leonard slowly started to wake up. Meanwhile Peterson and the other soldiers outside the house are slowly surrounded by a series of creatures (those who try to attract Tail in flashbacks) and take them by surprise by mutilating them and killing them all with bites and scratches before fleeing into the forest while the two boys are still in their hooded chairs without seeing what was going on hearing only sounds of death and terror. "Tail" leaves the house with his face and mouth dirty with the blood of the soldiers. Then she looks for a moment at the sun she hasn't seen in a long time. Then the girl approaching Leonard and puts his hands on her chest for a few moments (healing him from cancer). The girl releases them and then as she is about to go to the forest Elvis tries to stop her by taking her by the arm. The girl turns around growling but Elvis points to Jess's body lying on the ground asking please with tears with his eyes. The girl changes expression and returns with her sweet and gentle face and approaches Jess. The girl begins to touch Jess in various places until Jess's girlfriend starts making faint sounds. At this point she runs into the forest while the two men approach Jess. Some time later the two boys and Jess celebrate after new tests have found that the cancer has completely disappeared while Tail is seen rolling in the grass with the other creatures hopping around her.
A boat with some fishermen is in the middle of the sea on a rainy night that is trying to pull the net up from the water. When they manage to pull the net inside the boat they see that there is something strange between the fish. A fisherman goes to get an ax thinking it was a shark or some kind of giant squid. The strange creature rips the fishing net and pounces on the man who falls to the ground being seriously injured by a bite in the stomach losing a lot of blood. Between darkness and rain, it is not clear what is happening and the animal manages to escape from the incredulous sailors somewhere in the ship. Meanwhile, Captain Bowman is struggling to seek radio medical assistance due to bad weather conditions. After a great flash in the sky there is a moment of calm and silence and the fishermen hear a strange sound like a lament coming from a box on the bottom of the ship and a trail of blood. A sailor named Alexander approaches slowly with a harpoon in his hand. As he is opening it and looking inward, he sees a woman with a fish tail instead of her legs (Hannah John-Kamen) for a moment before seeing a helicopter that arrives in the sky and some men fall in a certain way. The men appear to be military and take away the injured man and the box after looking inside. The operations were commanded by Morris (Sterling K. Brown), a man with a tattoo on his neck and sunglasses, although it was night and rain. The captain tries to object because he understands that there is something strange but is threatened by Morris. Then the helicopter restarts. By helicopter, we also see Tanya next to Morris. The two exchange a smile saying that this capture will serve to find her and capture Her.
The scene moves to a rock in the middle of the sea where we see the queen of mermaids (Olivia) watching a splendid sunset with a severe and thoughtful gaze. Another siren emerges from the water (Rebecca Rittenhouse). Then in the distance we see that he approaches his queen and says something to her. The queen slams her hand into the water and makes a terrifying scream that raises a flock of seagulls. Then they both descend into the sea depths.
The midcredits begin. As the names flow, in the background there is the view seen by the queen who is swimming and descending into the depths of the sea overcoming various sea creatures in speed and agility until the midcredits end. The queen swims quickly with an angry face until she reaches a series of caves and tunnels. At one point she and the other mermaid are surrounded by a large group of horrible threatening sea creatures with sharp teeth and long sharp claws. The blonde-haired mermaid hides behind the queen when these amphibian-like monsters approach. The queen looks up looking at all the creatures that now seem to listen to her. Slowly, the atmosphere begins to change with those creatures that begin to color their bodies in a bright green way as a sign of submission by illuminating the tunnels. The queen looks at the scene with a satisfied air.
