The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 17 Round 6)

We've no eclipsed the halfway point of the season. The box office picture is becoming clearer, but the awards race not so much. Here's the latest edition of The Roundup....

3. Peter and the Shadow Thieves
Let me get this right out of the way: I did not like this film. However, I do like to see older films finally getting sequels after a long time away. So that's a positive, but you'll get more on this film below.

2. The Smoke in the Red Country
This one felt like an 80s or 90s action movie that could have starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Steven Seagal or Chuck Norris back in the day, and I do mean that as a compliment. The plot didn't really make much sense or much of an impact, but sometimes you just want to watch an old school hero take out countless bad guys.

1. Gerard Butler
How did it take this long for Gerard Butler to appear in an LRF production? He's one of the few action stars out there making R-rated action films, so we definitely need some more of him.

3. The Smoke in the Red Country
Overall, I appreciated the film, but it certainly isn't without its problems. The geography and time frame of the film makes no sense, with Butler apparently able to go halfway around the world in the blink of an eye.

2. Peter and the Shadow Thieves

This one was way too damn long. I didn't like the first film, Peter and the Starcatchers, either, but at least it was shorter and kept things simpler. This film was all over the place with characters coming and going, and nary a one getting any character development.

1. Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812
This is a film that did not seem to know what genre it wanted to be. It was marketed as a musical drama, but the type of melodrama on display was often comedic. Historical/Musical may have been more appropriate in my opinion. On top of that, the casting was pretty suspect. Selena Gomez and Justin Timberlake as Russians? Come on. Leto was believable in his role, but he was surrounded by less serious actors, making him stick out a bit.
