Based on the documentary

Plot: Miami, Florida - 1979. Jon Roberts (Mark Wahlberg) arrives in the sun and fun of Miami Beach from New York with just $750 to his name. He goes to a nightclub where he witnesses how popular cocaine has become. Ever the hustler, Jon uses all of his money to by a pound of cocaine. Jon quickly flips the drugs inside the clubs and is soon rolling in the cash. He is stunned at how quickly and easily he can sell cocaine in Miami.

Miami local Mickey Munday (Caleb Landry Jones) flies his Aero Commander 680 aircraft to Florida, staying low to avoid being detected by radar. He has 2000 pounds of marijuana onboard that he is smuggling into the US from Mexico. He flies low along the west coast, knowing the Coast Guard is more likely to patrol the eastern shores of the state. He lands at a tiny runway in the swamps. He unloads the giant packs of marijuana into the back of a truck.

Miami drug queen pin Griselda Blanco (Salma Hayek) calls her enforcer, Rivi Ayala (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), into her bedroom where is she is lounging around smoking basuco, an unrefined cocaine paste. She gives him the location of a dealer who owes them money. She tells Rivi to follow the man until he is in a public place, then kill him to send a message to anyone who thinks they can mess with her business. Rivi nods his head and leaves, one of Blanco's other enforcers, Miguel Perez (Amaury Nolasco) goes along with Rivi.

Rivi and Miguel drive a nondescript white van, following the man and his bodyguard from a house to a liquor store at the Dadeland Mall. Rivi makes sure his Uzi is loaded, and suggests Miguel does the same. The two get out of the van. While the target and his bodyguard are at the counter purchasing some liquor, Rivi and Miguel fire the entire magazines of 20 bullets from their Uzis into the targets through the front windows of the store. Once their guns are out of ammunition, they drop their gun and calmly get back into the van and drive away.

Jon is living it up in the clubs, selling cocaine as fast as he can get his hands on it. One night, he sees a beautiful woman, a model named Toni Mooney (Leven Rambin). He treats her to some blow and she begins talking about how much she loves horses. Jon lies to her and tells her that he owns a racehorse. They go back to his place on the beach and have sex. In the morning, with Toni still asleep in his bed, Jon makes a few phone calls and buys a racehorse to make his lie a reality.

Mickey makes a delivery of the marijuana to a group of Colombians led by Rafa Salazar (Jacob Vargas), who suggests that Mickey leave the marijuana smuggling to less talented men and start bringing in cocaine for them from Colombia.  Mickey isn't sure as he's pretty content with what he's been doing. Rafa informs Mickey that the marijuana isn't moving much, but people are buying cocaine like crazy so they can pay him a lot more if he switches product. Mickey tells Rafa that he'll think about it and collects his payment.

Jon becomes frustrated with his cocaine suppliers' lack of product as he knows he can sell more than they can give him. He insists he can sell 50-100 kilos of the the stuff, no problem, but they tell him they only have 10 kilos a week for him. While Jon is picking Toni up from a photo shoot, he complains to her about his connections not being able to supply him with as much cocaine as he can sell. Toni tells Jon that she knows a guy who might be able to help - a pilot who works with some Colombians.

Toni takes Jon to go and meet Mickey at his place out in the swamps outside of Miami. Mickey makes both Toni and Jon prove that they aren't wearing a wire or any kind of recording devices. Mickey is immediately put off by Jon and his flashy car and clothes, but he agrees to introduce Jon to his Colombian employers as a favor to Toni. Mickey and Jon arrive at a house in suburban Miami. When they enter the house, there are a dozen heavily-armed Colombians waiting for them. Rafa Salazar (Jacob Vargas) comes out to greet them like they're old friends. Jon tells Rafa his predicament, which Rafa laughs about. Rafa then leads them to a backroom where he slides away a wall, revealing a hidden room stacked full of cocaine. Jon's jaw drops at the sight. Rafa tells Jon that if he comes back with money tomorrow, he will hook him up with whatever he needs.

In the morning, Jon collects all of his hidden stashes of money throughout his house. Toni is stunned that he has so much money hidden around. Once Jon has all of his cash, he drives to Rafa's stash house. When he arrives, Rafa introduces Jon to his compadre Max Mermelstein (Jason Clarke). While Rafa's workers are loading up Jon's car, Rafa explains to Jon that he has to go back to Colombia a lot for business, but that if he isn't around Jon can always go through Max for anything he needs.

Griselda Blanco orders Rivi to kill Chucho, one of her former enforcers. Rivi is a conflicted because he used to work with Chucho. Blanco tells him that if he doesn't kill Chucho, she'll have Chucho kill him. Rivi drives up alongside Chucho's car, fires several shots into the car. He misses Chucho, but hits Chucho's young son who had been in the passenger seat. Rivi speeds off, upset with himself. When he reports back to Blanco, he expects her, as a mother, to be angry about the accidental death of a child, but she seems oddly pleased by it.

Jon goes back to Rafa's for product frequently. While Jon is loading product into his car, he overhears Rafa complaining about having to explain the actions of Griselda Blanco to his bosses down in Colombia: the Ochoas. Once everything is loaded up, Rafa tells Jon that he has made him a rich man and offers him a job to help bring product into the country with Mickey. Jon says he has never done any smuggling, but Rafa tells him to go see Mickey and work with him as the guy is a genius at smuggling. Jon drives up to Lakeland, Florida, where Mickey has built a runway and an airplane hangar. Mickey shows him around the property. Jon asks if the cops ever come sniffing around, and Mickey says that he knows how to avoid heat, explaining that he flies up to damn near Georgia before coming South - nobody is expecting stuff to be coming from the north. Jon, initially thinking Mickey was just some redneck, is impressed by Mickey's ingenuity.

Mickey and Jon fly Mickey's plane down to Medellin, Colombia, landing at a makeshift airstrip in the middle of the jungle. As soon as they land, they are greeted by Rafa, who tells them that he happened to be down in Colombia doing some business and wanted to say hello to them. The three of them watch as workers begin loading the plane with packages of cocaine, several hundred kilos. While they are loading up the plane, Mickey refills the plane's fuel tank. Rafa tells Jon that if the shipment goes well and Max informs him that all of his people have received their profit, there may be some extra work with someone as enterprising as him. Jon smiles and shakes Rafa's hand before loading back up on to the plane.

The shipment goes perfectly. Jon asks Mickey if there is any way they can increase the number of shipments they can make. Mickey says that there are two ways they could do that. One way would be to hire some more pilots, but that is just asking for extra heat. Jon asks about the second way. Mickey says that he has this idea to drop the product from the plane out by the Bahamas or the Keys and bring it the rest of the way by boat since it wouldn't take as much fuel and they wouldn't have to fly all the way north before landing. Jon convinces Mickey that they should try it.

Jon presents the plan to Max, who in turn runs it by Rafa. Mickey sends a video recording down to Colombia to show them how he needs the packages prepared for such a drop. For this run it is arranged that Mickey will be the man on the boat, while one of Rafa's men down in Colombia will drop the packages by the Inugua Islands near the Bahamas. The drop goes as planned, except that the Colombians didn't follow Mickey's packaging instructions and a lot of the packages burst open as they hit the water. Mickey loads a few thousand kilos of product into a hidden compartment on his boat, then starts driving north toward Florida. Mickey is driving past Key West on his way to Tampa to bring in the shipment, when he is stopped by a US Customs boat. They ask what he's doing, and Mickey tells them he's just testing out his new boat. As the US Customs boat is driving away from Mickey, their engine breaks down. Mickey, feeling confident, offers the customs agents a tow. The customs agents ride on Mickey's boat as he tows them to Fort Myers, standing mere feet away from half a million dollars worth of cocaine.

Jon, who now has a mansion, stables full of racehorses and a collection of sports cars, gets into a heated argument with Toni while both of them are high on Jon's cocaine supply. Toni gets into one of the cars and tries driving away, but Jon gets into another car and crashes into Toni's car. They take turns crashing their cars into each other until both cars are inoperable. Jon gets out of his car and demands that Toni get out and talk to her. He apologizes to her, but sternly warns her about leaving him by mentioning that the Ochoas don't exactly like loose-ends.

Dario Sepulveda (Esai Morales), Griselda Blanco's husband, walks in on Griselda smoking basuco and having sex with another woman, high out of their minds. Dario writes Griselda a note, saying that she fears for Michael's safety they stay in Miami with her, so they have gone back to Colombia. Dario grabs their young son, Michael Corleone, and heads to the airport. Dario, with Michael in his arms, boards a plane bound for Bogota, Colombia.

When Griselda comes out of her basuco haze, she begins looking around the property for Dario and Michael, finally finding the note. She grabs a gun and begins wildly firing it around the house. Once she is out of ammunition, she takes a deep breath. She then calls some contacts in Colombia. She offers them half a million dollars to have Dario killed and Michael brought back to her in Miami.

Rafa informs Max that the Ochoas want him to kill another American who turned on them. Max tries to explain that he's just an engineer, not a killer. Rafa laughs, and tells him good luck in explaining that to the Ochoas. Stressed by the thoughts of personally killing someone, Max begins swiping cocaine from Rafa's stash house and smoking it.

In Bogota, armed gunmen invade a house and kill Dario, shooting him several times. Blood splatters all over young Michael's face and he begins crying. The gunmen give Michael some candy and carry him out of the house. Back in Miami, Griselda is reunited with Michael, who is still in shock from wiBased oin tnessing his father's murder. She tells Michael that she is the only child she has left and she won't let anyone take him away, no matter who they are.

Griselda Blanco orders Rivi and Miguel to go kill a man and his wife because they owe her $250,000 for five kilos of cocaine that were delivered to them. Rivi says that job is simple enough. On their way out of her house, she says that they should kill anyone else in the house as well.

Rivi and Miguel arrive at the house. Rivi first asks the man if he has the money, even though it's clear he doesn't. Rivi puts two bullets in the man's head. In the other room, Miguel fires an Uzi at the wife, but the several bullets to the chest don't kill her. Rivi walks into the room and shoots the woman in the head, putting her out of her misery. As they search the house for drugs or money, they discover three frightened children watching television in another room. Miguel aims his gun at them, reminding Rivi that Griselda told them to kill anyone in the house. Rivi takes the gun away from Miguel, telling him that they were hired to kill the man and his wife, not a bunch of children. Miguel says that Griselda is going to be mad. Rivi tells Miguel to let him worry about that. That night, Rivi goes home and gives his daughter a kiss on the forehead as she sleeps.

Jon and Toni are at the horse track where Jon's horse, Desperado, is the better's favorite to win the race. Jon watches with pride as his horse wins the race. He tells Toni that the horse has a serious shot at making the Kentucky Derby at this rate. Toni asks Jon if he can just work the horse racing game, and stop all the drug business. Jon laughs and tells her that the drug game is what pays for the horse racing game. Jon notices how disappointed Toni looks and tells her that maybe if Desperado wins the Derby they can talk about it again.

Mickey continues making improvements to the property in Lakeland. There are now two runways and two airplane hangars disguised as barns. He continues making upgrades to the boats and planes to make the business run ever smoother.

Griselda tells Rivi that a business rival was coming back to Miami from Colombia to steal her business. Rivi asks her what she wants him to do about it. She then shows him a vintage World War II bayonet and tells Rivi that she wants the man killed like the pig he as soon as he gets through Customs. Rivi calls the plan a suicide mission and refuses. Instead she gets Miguel to agree to do it, but she orders Rivi to drive him.

At the airport, Miguel waits with the bayonet hidden under his jacket while Rivi watches from a safe distance. When the man comes through the Customs gates, Miguel quickly charges him and stabs him several times. Airport guests stare in shock at the vicious attack. As soon as Miguel gets to back onto his feet, he is tackled by multiple airport police officers. Miguel looks to Rivi for help, but Rivi walks away from the area.

Rafa tries to convince Griselda to leave Miami, saying that the murders she keeps ordering are drawing way too much attention to their business. Griselda scoffs at his request, but Rafa insists that the Ochoas are serious and shouldn't be disrespected. He tells her that they would be fine with her conducting business in California, but that she has drawn way too much attention in Florida and needs to leave.

Rafa meets with Max and informs him that the Ochoas want Max to arrange a hit on a pilot turned government witness named Barry Seal.  Max tries to talk his way out of it, but Rafa insists that the Ochoas want an American to plan it and that Barry's continued testimony could put a wrench in things for everyone.

Griselda, having decided to leave for California soon, offers Rivi the chance to join her there. Rivi, exhausted by Griselda's unhinged methods, tells her that he plans on going to Chicago instead where his family is. Griselda tells Rivi she understands his choice as family is the most important thing in life.

Max is driving his car around and starts to suspect he is being followed. When he arrives at the stash house, Max tells Rafa that he thinks he's being followed. Rafa suggests Max is just being overly paranoid and tells him to stop smoking so much cocaine as it is clouding his usually sound judgement. Rafa looks out the window and doesn't see anything. He then looks at Max, dead serious, and tells him that if he is being followed though, to not lead them to his location.

On his drive home, Max is pulled over by several unmarked cars. The authorities announce themselves as both DEA and Miami-Dade Police. Lt. Raul Diaz (Raul Esparza) leads the bust. They search his car and find multiple guns as well as nearly half a million dollars in cash stashed throughout the vehicle.

When he hears that Max has been busted, Rafa gets ready to leave Miami and head back to Colombia. Before he leaves for the airport, Rafa gives Jon a call, telling him the situation. Jon takes garbage bags full of money from his house and buries them in the Everglades. Toni doesn't think that Max is the type to turn witness for the government, but Jon thinks it's better to be safe than sorry.

Lt. Raul Diaz informs Max of all the charges the feds and the police can charge him with, which would keep him behind bars for quite some time. Max quickly offers to help them shut down the entire operation. He tells them that he knows everything from the street level stuff all the way up to the cartel, the Ochoas and Pablo Escobar - and even Panamanian ruler Manuel Noriega. Diaz tells Max to start talking and maybe they can work something out.

Jon goes to see Mickey, and the two of them decide to lay low for a while until they where the wind is blowing on the operation following Max's arrest. The next morning, the DEA and state police show up to conduct a raid on Mickey's property. Mickey ends up in the standoff with the authorities. He uses a flare gun to blow up barrels of fuel inside on of the airplane hangars. Under the cover of the flames and explosions, Mickey escapes into the Florida swamps. Later in the day, Lt. Diaz and a group of officers bust Jon as he is leaving his house. They arrest him and take whatever money he still had stashed at his house - millions of dollars.

When DEA agents show up to raid Griselda Blanco's house, they find her in bed reading the Bible. She tries to tell them she is someone else, but they don't buy it and bring her into custody. Once she is put in handcuffs, she kicks and screams and it takes several agents to get her into a vehicle.

After hearing about the arrests going on, Rivi knows the authorities are bound to come after him sooner or later. He grabs whatever cash he can find in his house and heads to the airport. As he is going through the terminal at the Miami International Airport, an MDPD officer calls after him, saying he's under arrest. Rivi says he is mistaken and keeps walking. Suddenly, police dogs are sent after him. Rivi tries outrunning the police dogs, but catch up and attack him. The officers then catch up and handcuff him as the dogs keep him on the ground.

At a preliminary hearing, Jon is informed by a judge that they will be holding him without bail. Jon strikes a deal with the DEA, offering to help them catch Mickey if they let him post a bond to be released until trial. Angry about Mickey's fiery escape, they accept his offer. Diaz tries to convince his superiors that Roberts has no intention of turning witness like Max and is just using them, but they ignore his warning. Jon contacts Mickey and assures him that he isn't going to snitch on him, but he is trying to bide some time so he can try to get out of Miami.

Jon bids farewell to Toni, telling her that he needs to get out of the country while he can. Toni asks where he's going, and Jon tells her that he is going to head down to Colombia, saying that Rafa and his people will take care of him down there. Jon then goes to Rafa's mansion in Colombia. After a while of being a fugitive in the comfort of Rafa's mansion, the Colombian military shows up at the mansion. Rafa is killed in a shootout with the military. When Jon sees Rafa killed in front of him, he surrenders to the authorities. He is sent back to the United States to face trial.

The ever-confident Rivi is rattled when he is informed that he is facing the death penalty since they have enough evidence to convict him of at least three executions, if not more. Rivi tells them that it was all Griselda Blanco. She wanted him to kill innocent women and children and he wouldn't do it. He offers to testify against Blanco if he can avoid the death penalty.

  • Jon Roberts was released from prison in 2000. He reportedly made a living by selling out drug dealers to the DEA until his death by cancer in 2011.
  • Mickey Munday was a fugitive for six years before finally being captured. He served 10 years in prison. In 2012, he was convicted of auto-fraud conspiracy and sentenced to 12 years behind bars.
  • Rivi Ayala was convicted of three murders with the possibility of parole after 25 years for his cooperation in testifying against Griselda Blanco. However, his testimony against Blanco was thrown out when it was discovered that he had engaged in phone sex relationships with multiple secretaries from the state attorney's office from behind bars. He was denied parole in 2013.
  • Max Mermelstein's testimony helped bring down the Medellin Cartel's distributors in Miami. The cartel put a $3 million contract on his head. He was placed in the Witness Protection Program, where he remained until his death from cancer in 2008.

"Anchored by two fantastic lead performances from Tobey Maguire and Elisabeth Moss, the latest Stephen King (and Owen King) adaptation is an entertaining supernatural excursion with a strong emotional core."  - Michael Carthage, Associated Press

“I didn't love Sleeping Beauties,  but it has some interesting supernatural elements that kept me engrossed. Also working in its favor, was that it has a very unique vibe to it, despite playing with well worn genre tropes.” - Dave Cone, New York Post

"One of the better supernatural thrillers I've seen in some time. Sam Raimi's direction gives the film strong visuals and a sense of the unknown. But where the film really succeeds is the casting and how well each performers manages both the supernatural and emotional moments." - Ken Giles, Houston Chronicle

Plot: In the woods outside of Dooling, West Virginia, the mysterious Eve Black (Katherine Waterston) is walking alone when a moth lands on her arm. Dozens more moths appear. She follows the moths toward the light of a trailer in the middle of the forest. The trailer turns out to be a meth lab. Eve sets fire to the lab, resulting in an explosion that kills the two men working inside. She sits down on a log nearby as the sound of sirens approach. When the firetrucks arrive, they call the sheriff's office when they see Eve on the scene. Sheriff Lila Norcross (Elisabeth Moss) is in bed with her husband Clint Norcross (Tobey Maguire) when she gets a call from Deputy Terry Coombs (Jake Johnson), asking her to come down to the crime scene. When Lila arrives at the scene of the explosion, she finds that Terry has handcuffed Eve and put her in the back of his car. He tells Lila that she wanted to talk to the sheriff. Lila walks over to the car and asks Eve if she started the fire. Eve confesses to the crime and asks to be arrested.

Early in the morning Lila takes Eve to the local prison, the Dooling Correctional Institute for Women, to be examined by her husband Clint, who works as there as the chief psychiatrist. Lila privately tells Clint that the woman's behavior weirds her out, and they can't find identify her, but she claims her name is Eve Black. Clint gives his wife a kiss and tells her that he'll learn what he can from the examination and give her an update.

As Lila drives through town, her police radio starts blowing up about several women have been found in a comatose state with some sort of cocoon surrounding their bodies. Meanwhile, Clint is interviewing Eve, but she isn't giving him any information about herself. He then hears a commotion through the prison, as several inmates have been found that morning in the same comatose, cocooned state. Eve smiles throughout the commotion, leading Clint to believe she has something to do with it.

Lila and Clint's son, Jared (Asher Angel), is making out with his girlfriend, Mary Geary (Talitha Bateman), when they are hit with rocks thrown by Eric Blass (Ty Simpkins). Jared yells at him to stop, but Eric just laughs and keeps throwing rocks. Jared and Mary leave the area and head back to her house. They go inside and finds Mary's mother, Elaine Nutting (Judy Greer). Elaine tells them that she just got off an overnight shift at the hospital and is going to sleep, so they need to keep their volume down. Jared asks how Mary how she's doing with her parents having recently finalized their divorce. Mary says that she still loves her father, Frank, but that her mother couldn't handle his temper  and how he would yell about every little thing.

Lila arrives back at the police station, exhausted after not getting any sleep. She falls asleep on a couch in her office. Terry enters her office and finds that Lila, too, has entered a cocoon state. The phones keep on ringing at the station, overwhelming Terry. He calls his friend Frank Geary (Danny McBride), the town's animal control officer, and asks him to come down to the station to help out.

Clint drives home at the end of the day, finding that people have begun looting the local grocery store. He turns on the radio and hears a report about the mysterious illness spreading across town causing sleeping women to become fall into a comatose state and becoming cocooned in a strange material. Clint tries calling his wife, but it goes to voicemail, so he drives over to the police station. As he tries to enter the station, he is aggressively stopped by Frank who demands to know his business. Terry is drinking at his desk and has unplugged all of the station's phones. When he sees Frank grabbing Clint, he tells him to say off the sheriff's husband. Clint asks where his wife is, and Terry simply points to Lila's office. When Clint enters the office, he finds Lila cocooned. Clint tries to pull the material off her, but the material burns his hands.

Lila finds herself in an idyllic version of Dooling's main street. There are no men in sight, but there some of the town's women walking around in a confused state. Lila walks into the police station where she finds Eve Black sitting in her office. Lila asks what is going on, but Eve doesn't acknowledge her.

Clint drives back to the prison, where the inmates are increasingly panicked and demand to know what it going on. One of the inmates, Jeanette Sorley (Melissa George) pleads with Clint to give her some medication to keep her awake so that she won't be the next one sick. Clint goes to see the warden, Janice Coates (Kim Dickens). She eagerly asks if he knows anything more about what's going on than what is on the news. He looks at his still burned hands and tells her that it isn't a good idea to try to remove the cocoons. She tells him she is afraid of it happening to her since it seems to only affect women. He says that if it only affects sleeping women, her only chance is to not fall asleep.

Jared and Mary turn on the news and learn about the illness spreading through town. They check on Elaine, finding her in a cocoon. Mary worries that she will become sick like her mother if she falls asleep and begs Jared to make sure she doesn't fall asleep.

Clint goes to the cell of Eve Black and demands answers. Eve is finally willing to talk. She explains that she has been sent to prove that without women, a society of just men will devolve into war, chaos and evil. She tells Clint that his job is to protect her for a week or so. Clint asks what happens in a week. She tells him that if she remains unharmed by the evil men in town, she will cure all every woman in Dooling. Eve then tells Clint that she is tired. She closes her eyes and quickly falls asleep.

After deputizing his friend Frank, Terry has now also deputized his nephew Eric Blass and a recently fired prison guard named Don Peters (David Arquette), to help maintain order in town. The four officers walk down main street in riot gear, ordering all residents of town to return to their homes.

Clint finds Janice asleep at her desk and realizes that he is now the only left to run the prison - and protect Eve Black from harm. Clint checks on Eve in her cell, finding that she is immune to the illness as she is asleep without any cocoon developing.

In the dreamworld of Dooling, Lila finds Janice and Elaine on main street. They ask her what's going on, and as birds chirp and flowers bloom around them, Lila says that she believes they are now in a version of Dooling without men. Elaine says it is nice, but Lila and Janice quickly remind her that it isn't real. The three women begin looking around town for other survivors. On their search, they find a moth-covered, glowing tree in the exact center of town. The tree wasn't there before, so they suspect that the tree may be involved with what's keeping them there. Elaine suggests they destroy the tree. She pulls out a lighter, but Jeanette Sorley tackles her to stop her from burning the tree. Lila and Janice separate Jeanette and Elaine. Lila tells the others that no good will come from fighting with one another or destroying anything. They need to continue gathering everyone and having them go to town hall until they can figure things out. The group splits up to find other survivors.

Terry reveals to his new deputies that all of this began when Eve Black showed up in town. Frank gets riled up and says that they should go down to the prison and capture Eve. They arm themselves and take a police truck down to the prison. When they arrive, they find that they can't get into the building and Clint won't let them in. Terry fires a shotgun blast at the metal doors of the prison. The slug ricochets off of the metal, and hits Eric in the head, killing him instantly. Terry is in shock. Don tries to do CPR, but Frank pulls him off, saying that CPR isn't going to fix a bullet to the head. Frank then gets into the truck and rams the doors open with the vehicle. Frank and Don walk into the building when they hear a nearby gun blast. They turn back to find that Terry has killed himself out of grief of accidentally killing his nephew Eric. Don says that they should turn back and wait things out, but Frank insists that the answer to what's going in is inside the prison. Don says that he didn't sign up to get killed, and leaves the prison. Frank continues into the building by himself.

Jared falls asleep while watching Mary. When he wakes up she is asleep as well while a cocoon begins to form around her. He burns his hands trying to pull it off. He puts Mary into her bed and leaves the house to see the deserted streets. He calls his father Clint, who tells him to get home immediately. Instead, Jared goes to the police station and finds his mother in her cocoon.

Lila and the others have gathered every survivor they could find in the town hall meeting room. Mary wanders in and is reunited with her mother. The dozens of women turn to Lila and ask her what they should do. She says that they all need to stay calm and not do anything rash. She thinks they should all stay at town hall where they know they are safe.

Hearing the gunshots, Clint tells Eve that he needs to move her to a solitary confinement cell where she will be more safe. As Clint leads Eve through the prison corridors, they run into Frank, who aims his shotgun at Eve. Clint stands in front of Eve, blocking Frank's shot. Frank demands that he hand Eve over to him. Clint asks Frank to leave her alone as her safety is the only thing keeping his wife alive at this point. Eve, however, tells Frank that she can save his family - his wife and daughter who are both now in the dreamworld, but only if he kills her. Frank, unsure of who to believe, puts his gun down and pleads with Eve to bring his wife and daughter back. He admits that he's made mistakes as a husband and a father, but he wants them to be safe. Eve is taken aback by the heartfelt pleas from a seeming brute like Frank. Eve tells Clint and Frank that she cannot force them back, but if the women of Dooling tell her they want to come back, she will make it happen. Clint asks how, and Eve says that she needs to sleep.

All of the women of Dooling are at the town hall in the dreamworld when Eve enters. She tells them that they were brought there to prove that men are inherently violent and should be allowed to die out, that the dreamworld of Dooling around them is a place without crime or violence - like the world should be. "There are a handful of decent scares, and that's really all that should matter when it comes to a horror film. Combine that with a cast of talented young actresses, and I can think of worse ways to spend an evening at the movies." - Paul Onkean, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"Everything that does work in the film has been done in better, more interesting ways in other horror films. The film is competent, but feels redundant." - Josh Manning, NY Daily News

"Fear of the Dark features a ridiculous amount of set-up, only for the payoff to not really be that intriguing. When you spend so much time setting up the characters and the rules of a horror film, you need to give the audience a little more - and hopefully something they haven't seen before." - Scott E. Kerr, Chicago Reader

Director: Craig Gillespie
Writer: Andrew Doster
Cast: Chloe Grace Moretz, Anya Taylor-Joy, Katherine Langford, Peyton Roi List, Keri Russell, Peter Sarsgaard, Sydney Sweeney, Maisie Williams, Cassady McClincy, Stephanie Sigman, Justin Hartley, Georgina Haig

Plot: The film begins on a seemingly happy summer evening when two loving parents, Nathan Christensen (Justin Hartley) and his wife Cassie (Georgina Haig) celebrate their young daughter Ally's birthday. At the top of the table are two presents that Ally hasn't opened yet. Mom opens the fridge and takes a wonderful birthday cake and puts it on the table right in front of Ally cheering happily. As long as the mother cuts the cake, the father sings the birthday wishes in a playful way. When the girl is about to taste the cake there is a blackout in the house and the father takes a torch from the drawer and goes down to the cellar to check the electricity meter while Ally, who has always had a certain fear of the dark, decides to follow him. and wait for him at the top of the stairs leading to the cellar. At one point a noise scares the child and tells her father to be careful with a frightened voice. The father reassures her by lighting the cellar with his torch and turns to his daughter with a smile. At that moment a black figure takes him from behind and violently stabs him in the stomach, killing him. The girl screams terrified by the terrible vision and runs quickly into the kitchen screaming and stumbles on the now dying corpse of her mother who is lying on the ground and has a deep wound in her chest. The little girl hugs her mother and gets dirty with her blood. The mother with the last strength she has and with the blood coming out of her mouth whispers to her daughter that she cannot stay there with her and that she has to escape from there. So Ally runs off to the street crying.

15 years later Ally (Chloe Grace Moretz) is in the office of Dr. Caroline Jones (Keri Russell), a very famous and well-known psychologist in the city. Ally has an unlit cigarette in her mouth and listens to Dr. Jones speak in a friendly way. Ally was very upset by the story that involved her as a child and for this reason she has always been helped by various doctors and psychologists. Ally always insisted on blaming the Boogeyman for the murder of her parents, despite the police claiming that it was a robbery attempt that ended in tragedy. Dr. Jones proposes that the girl be part of a special program where there are other young people like her who have various problems and where many others have managed to heal and have great improvements. This program takes place at St. Jermaine Hospital in an old hospital wing. However, the girl refuses the offer despite the doctor's efforts to persuade her and leaves for her apartment throwing the unlit cigarette on the floor. Caroline Jones is sad about the attitude The next night Ally goes to sleep, the lamp is on on the bedside table and an unlit torch is hidden under the pillow. At some point in the night she has a terrible nightmare in which the light in her room starts to go out intermittently and then she is kidnapped and taken to a dark, dirty and gloomy place by a dark figure. Eventually she is brutally killed in the dark. Ally wakes up screaming and dripping with sweat and crosses her legs crying. Even though it is still night, she decides to call Dr. Jones to try out this experimental program. Arriving on the scene, Dr. Jones very kindly sets the rules of the program and takes the girl's cell phone. Dr. Jones shows Ally the room and introduces her to the psychiatrist, Dr. Allen (Peter Sarsgaard) who seems to have a detached demeanor and creates some anxiety for the girl.

At this point the girl makes the acquaintance of the nurse Natalie Santana (Stephanie Sigman) and then is left at the beginning of the corridor and starts walking shyly in the corridor heading towards her room trying not to meet the eyes of any of the other patients, though he can't help but take a quick look at the other rooms. For example, he sees a girl frantically cleaning her chair and another girl softly dancing and humming the song "If I die young .." in front of a closet full of comics. Ally comes to her room snorting, almost regretting going to such a place. Soon after she hears a fight in the hallway, which seems almost out of jealousy, and looks out and sees two other patients, Danielle (Peyton Roi List) and Krysten (Anya Taylor-Joy). The dispute ends abruptly when Krysten jokes about Danielle's body. Danielle then puts her hands on her chest and walks away without saying a word and as she passes Ally's room she makes an unpleasant gesture towards her. Ally doesn't react anyway. Ally then starts arranging the clothes inside the closet but a black shadow inside scares her and she starts to back away and almost falls to the ground. At that moment two other girls arrive in the room and are very nice to Ally. The first is talkative Tracy (Maisie Williams) who quickly turns out to be obsessively germophobic and recounts the kind of weird ambivalent relationship Danielle and Krysten have. The other girl in the room is sweet young Kara (Cassady McClincy) who shows up with a The Walking Dead comic and a music CD from the TV series Glee in hand. Kara says she's always afraid the light will go out. Kara immediately invites Ally to her room to show off her huge collection of nerdy comics and items. As they enter that room they meet the gaze of Valerie (Sydney Sweeney) who is sitting in a chair in the hallway and reading a magazine. Ally greets her but the other girl doesn't respond and just nods. Kara reveals that Valerie suffered trauma as a child and hasn't spoken since. After Kara shows Ally her entire collection of comics and nerdy items, Ally returns to her room. Then she returns to her room, lies down thinking about her two new bizarre friends and starts smiling at their weirdness. At some point, however, Ally starts staring at the closet, keeps looking at it, and can't take it away. The closet continues to give her a sense of anxiety and so she decides to remove one of the closet doors to keep it always open. In the afternoon Ally is called by excited Kara to attend the first group session. Ally is not particularly happy with this but is taken by both Kara and Tracy by the hand and accompanied where group therapy is done. Ally takes a look at the whole group. Among them is also Jessica (Katherine Langford), who had not been able to meet Ally in the morning because she was in the infirmary. In fact, Ally quickly notes that Jessica had her arms covered in various bandages. Jessica, after shaking Ally's hand, tells the whole group and Dr. Jones that when she cuts her arms she feels good because she often loses touch with reality and these cuts highlight the suffering within herself. and when he does, she feels alive. At this point Krysten intervenes by making a harsh comment first against Jessica, then towards Valerie and finally turns to Ally asking politely but with an ironic smile what ailment she suffers from. Ally, with difficulty, reveals that she is afraid of the Boogeyman, arousing laughter from Krysten and Danielle who begin to tease and take her. Kara tries to defend Ally, but is also mocked for her love of comics and quickly leaves the discussion. When the two girls are stopped by Dr. Jones, Ally escapes to her room and starts packing to leave and soon realizes that the closet door she had removed is back in place. At this point she is joined by Dr. Jones who tells her a story about her mother suffering from schizophrenia. She says that the disease can be hereditary and that she too can get sick in the future and she is very afraid of it and convinces Ally to stay and continue her journey together.

During dinner, Ally sits at Kara and Tracy's table. The two girls tell Ally some dynamics within the group. For example, they tell of Danielle's eating disorders and her having a succubus love towards Krysten and Jessica's moody days where sometimes she is kind and other times she is almost worse than Krysten. For a moment, Ally seems to see a shadow in the corridor. Meanwhile, Krysten stared at their table all through dinner. A certain Krysten throws a piece of bread in the basket and then walks over to Ally's table looking Ally in the eyes. She says the group doesn't need weak people, pointing with her index finger at Kara and Tracy and inviting her to get the balls out and not run away when someone teases her about her fear. After dinner we see a nurse who quietly tells Kara that her package has arrived and says she left it in the library downstairs and secretly gives her the key to open the elevator. Kara jokingly tells the nurse not to turn off the light and goes down without being seen by anyone. Kara arrives at the library and opens the package. Inside are two rare Spider-Man comics and an Iron-Man collectible. While she is admiring the object she hears noises and begins to be afraid of being discovered. At this point the girl collects the comics and goes to the elevator to return to the upper floor. While he is in the hall, suddenly a hoarse and disturbing voice begins to whisper the first words of the song "If I die young". Kara starts to get scared and starts asking if anyone is there. Shortly after, when the girl has almost reached the elevator, the corridor light goes out and Kara is plunged into darkness. Kara is terrified and freezes in fear. Behind her, a dark shadow approaches her quickly until it hits her hard in the chest and belly. Upstairs, we see Nurse Natalie Santana doing a crossword puzzle when at one point she sees the elevator go up and at one point the doors open. Then he sees Kara's body cut in half and Natalie screams. The next day, Dr. Allen and Dr. Jones tell the other visibly shaken girls that Kara's death was an unfortunate accident. They say that when Kara's power went out due to a breakdown, she panicked and the elevator crushed her and cut her in half. The nurse who sent her down was also said to have been fired. Tracy is the one who has the worst reaction after the doctors' words, she has an anxiety crisis where she screams that the chair she's sitting on is not hers and it's full of germs and throws it far into the room and then runs to sit down a corner with her hands on her head saying that Kara was her best friend and that the improvements she had had came only thanks to her. Tracy is particularly reassured by Dr. Jones and Ally. This time, however, Krysten, understanding the situation, says nothing wrong. At this point, after Tracy has calmed down, Allen asks Dr. Jones to follow her to the office. He says this program was a bad idea from the start and that the hospital board has cut the funds and will end it soon. Dr. Jones objects and says she will do anything to continue the program even at cost to sleep there to better follow the boys and replace the newly fired nurse. Then he leaves the office slamming the door. At this point we see Ally taking a shower and when she goes out she sees a bloody towel putting on her bathrobe. Then he notices that the blood comes out of another shower, flowing on the floor mixed with the water. At the same time, we see that Tracy is in her room, not feeling well and is cleaning her from top to bottom as she continues talking to herself without stopping. Meanwhile, Ally very slowly approaches the shower from where the blood flows and opens the door. Inside is Jessica doing several superficial cuts in her arms with a nail and Ally pauses to watch the scene for a few seconds. The blood falls to the ground and Jessica seems satisfied with her work. After a few seconds Jessica notices Ally's presence in front of her and sends her away saying not to meddle and that she is only doing what makes her feel good.

The scene returns to Tracy's room. She takes a packet of chips from the closet and puts one in her mouth. But we see that in the box there were not only chips but also various cockroaches and other insects and Tracy eats one by accident. The girl notices what she has done she is completely terrified she cries and tries to spit trying to throw up. So she tries to find water in your room, but all the bottles she usually uses are strangely empty and she's totally panicked. We see that in a corner of the room there is a figure passing a bottle with a yellowish liquid to the crying girl and she starts drinking it. Meanwhile, Ally is returning to her room. Valerie runs up to her very agitated to get her attention and then Krysten's screams are heard calling out the name "Tracy!" Ally runs there with Dr. Jones and the other girls and we see that Tracy is dead. She has blood in her mouth. Ally notices the presence of the yellowish liquid bottle and realizes that Tracy has ingested some kind of acid. Dr. Jones says to call someone right away, but Natalie says that for some unknown reason the floor is isolated, there is no power, and the phones don't work. The doctor asks Natalie to go down and restore the electrical system. Natalie, a little reluctant and frightened, comes down the stairs. Later the girls gathered in the dining room, quite frightened and nervous. Ally goes on to say that the Boogeyman who haunts her is responsible and these words make Krysten particularly angry and Danielle reassures her. Ally says this creature knows everyone's fears and uses them to her advantage. Valerie is sitting next to Ally and seems to believe what she says. Meanwhile, Jessica walks away from the others saying she has to go to the bathroom. The camera shows that she is holding the nail she had previously injured herself with. Time passes, there is no news from Natalie, and the power has not restored. Dr. Jones says she has to go check it out and tells the girls to stay there and not move. Dr. Jones takes the emergency stairs and goes down. Ally tries in vain to convince her to stay there because if she goes there alone the Boogeyman will hurt her. Arriving in the basement, he starts wandering around the floor and calls Nathalie's name until he hears noises. Suddenly she is taken from behind and a black figure implants two syringes in her neck and falls to the ground with the foam coming out of her mouth. Meanwhile upstairs we see Jessica in her bed waking up bound and gagged with various larvae on her arms coming out of her wounds. The girl is agitated but none of the others seem to hear her. At this point the black figure approaches her and puts a long-bladed knife in her hand and she begins to sink the knife into the flesh to drive away the larvae. Meanwhile, for the first time, we see the face of the evil figure, he has red eyes and a big mouth with long, sharp teeth with a deformed face. The claws of the hands are curved.

Meanwhile, Ally notices that Jessica has never come back and starts looking for her. At one point he finds her dead and then starts screaming and running in the corridors attracting the attention of the other two girls who were flirting in the bathroom where the showers are. Ally tells the three girls that Jessica is dead but once they return to the room they can't find anyone, the room is empty and clean. Ally is confused that she can't find anyone while Krysten and Danielle start yelling at her saying that there is no supernatural creature and that she is just crazy. Ally tries to convince them to find a way to escape while Krysten decides to lock herself in the room and wait for the morning shift. Danielle is undecided what to do, but ultimately decides to stay in Krysten's room. Krysten starts packing as Danielle asks where they will go once they get out of there. Krysten says he teased her and outside the hospital he has no intention of being with her and pushes her out of the room. Meanwhile, Ally with a fire extinguisher has opened the door of Dr. Jones's office to find a key to get out of there until she finds a folder of a boy obsessed with Boogeyman and who has committed several murders in another different institution. from a few years earlier. It was written that he had had an episode of dissociation from reality. The file also reveals that the doctor who was treating him was Dr. Allen. In the office, the girl also finds a torch and a lighter and puts them in her pocket. Valerie is with Ally but suddenly she seems to disappear into thin air. Meanwhile, Krysten has a fit of rage and throws everything up in the air and punches the wall of her room causing a deep wound in his hand. The girl runs to the infirmary and bandages her hand before returning to the room. At this point there is a tape recorder above his bed where you can listen to private interviews in a session with Dr. Allen. In the recording Krysten gives the impression that she is much more fragile than she proves to be in everyday life. The girl looks around worried that someone might hear her in that situation. The Boogeyman comes out from under the bed and after injuring her Achilles tendon and hitting her on the ground, kills her. Meanwhile, Valerie is stuck in a chair and in danger of being suffocated. Ally tries to free her. Valerie wants to tell Ally where the key is, but she can't speak and suffocates. Then, Ally leaves and hears some grunts and weird noises coming from the dining room and slowly approaches those noises. She finds Danielle stuck on a kitchen table with tubes down her throat with an unknown substance running down her throat. Abby tries to save her but Danielle dies in excruciating pain. At that point the killer tries to attack Ally by surprise but she manages to escape just in time. Abby comes out of the kitchen crying and sees that the basement exit is open and Abby runs down. As he runs and looks back, he meets someone and falls to the ground. There is Dr. Jones sitting on the floor looking completely confused and hallucinating. The woman says completely nonsense things. Next to her is Natalie's horribly disfigured body. Abby tries to reassure the doctor but the woman is too confused and tries to cling to Abby by scaring her and the girl runs away leaving her there. Meanwhile the killer, after killing Dr. Jones, follows her by crawling with his claws on the walls causing frightening screeches. They arrived in a room where there are also flammable containers. When the monster approaches her, Ally lights the lighter and throws it into the containers. At this point, an explosion occurs involving the killer as Abby manages to escape until she meets Dr. Allen who tries to stop the girl by telling her to calm down because the police are on their way. The girl continues to look in the direction of the explosion saying that the Boogeyman exists and that he has killed everyone. The doctor tries to reassure her and make her understand that she has everything in her head and that the Boogeyman does not exist and that instead it was she who killed everyone. The girl cries and falls to the ground on her knees saying that it is not true and that it could not be her. Meanwhile he sees that the monster is slowly approaching behind the doctor. The doctor continues to reassure her and also holds a syringe in her hand to sedate Abby as she continues to look behind the doctor screaming. This time, however, the monster seems to have suddenly disappeared and for a moment the girl thinks she is really crazy and that she had really turned into a killer. Suddenly the monster falls from above and starts hitting the doctor's head repeatedly causing him to fall to the ground while the girl escapes to the upper floor where she meets the cops who have arrived. They see the girl visibly altered and try to figure out what happened after they found all the bodies. Abby is confused and seems to become the prime suspect in everything that happened despite her continuing to scream that it was the monster who committed the massacre. The film ends in another house where parents and children watch a comedy movie and a dark figure in the shadow of the room staring at them. Suddenly the light goes out and a moment later a scream is heard.

She attacks the monster and it appears she's successful before the monster counter her attacks and starts pushing her back, the fight goes for a while and destroying the city, thankfully the citizens -most of the citizen- had been evacuated from the location.

Between the fight, Alina can see some family running away near the fight, so she tries to push the monster back and roll to the side so she can run away but the monster grab her leg and cut it off.

Joel look at it in horror, the robot try to crawl away, blood pouring from its leg, Joel run to the control room where Alina is laying, her leg was cut off, He bangs the door but were taken away by the staff.

in the end, just like Marshall, her head was cut off but this time the monster chew her head off. Joel feel to his knees, he's full of anger and demand to be put on the robot.

The leader smiles and let him, he talks to himself "My son is growing up"

He lay in the capsule and his consciousness was transfers to the robot and he was launched.

The robot pop up from the underground, there is some smoke coming out of the robot, the leader who is watching from the base is smiling and say "Show them what A.C.E can do!"

The monster tries to escape, the robot's eyes are glowing and from it shoots laser beam and evaporate the monster, the laser is so strong it went through the atmosphere and can be seen from Jupiter.

The robot fell on its knee and the leader smiles and clap.

"This is exactly the type of film that can thrive on a small screen format like LRF NOW, but would flounder on the big screen. There is no big screen audience for anime fans, but the fans will get a version for LRF at long last, and I doubt it will disappoint them."

The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 18 Round 6)

We're now past the halfway point of Season 18, and this sixth round certainly added some wrinkles to the season so far. Here's the latest edition of The Roundup....

3. Julianne Moore
I liked seeing Moore make her directorial debut. I could be wrong, but I believe this would make her just the second performer to make their feature film directorial debut with an LRF production. She would join Tom Cruise, who directed the final(?) entry in the Splinter Cell franchise, Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

2. Caesar
This was a top of the line production from top to bottom. A-List stars, A-List director, massive budget, epic story, two of the best writers LRF has to offer, etc. There was no way it couldn't work, and it didn't disappoint.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio
Is there any actor with a better batting average in LRF that Leonardo DiCaprio? Prior to Caesar, he had starred in two movies for the studio: Blackwater and Calamity. Both movies were hits at the box office and adored by critics. DiCaprio won the Best Actor GRA for both film, and I frankly wouldn't be surprised if he ends up 3-for-3 after this season thanks to his performance in Caesar.

3. The Journey
I had trouble connecting with this one. How old are these characters supposed to be? They all look 16, but obviously some fairly adult stuff goes on during the plot. I also had an issue with the star, but more on that later.

2. Tumor
I appreciated the movie more than I enjoyed it. It's competently acted/directed/written, but I feel like I've seen it all before. It was like deja vu all over again.

1. Tom Holland
I'm pretty sure I've gone over all this before, so I'll keep it brief this time around... I don't like Tom Holland. I don't think he's a particularly believable performer (and I think he's the worst Spider-Man ever to grace the big screen). The Journey was certainly not the film to turn around my opinion, where he played an annoying boy band pop singer.
