Reaction: Very solid numbers for a moderately budgeted R-Rated film. The curiosity factor of putting Mel Gibson in his first comic book role surely had to help the box office, plus he's still a pretty decent draw in overseas markets where audiences tend to care less about a star's personal life.
"Mel Gibson plays the role of Frank Castle like only he can. It's a tour de force of aggression, anger, grief and sorrow. Action films are rarely in the running for acting awards, but Gibson showed that he needs to be seriously considered for Best Actor come GRA season." - Glenn Howard, Total Film
"Despite strong performances from the likes of Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, I can't help but feel like this story was too derivative of other films and stories. I was hoping for more than just another revenge film. It's good at what it does, I was just expecting more given the pedigree of those involved." - Matthew Ellis, USA Today
"This adaptation is clearly the most inventive and emotionally satisfying big screen (or small screen) take on The Punisher yet. Gibson doesn't pull any punches in this one, giving a brutal and gut-wrenching performance. He is aided by a strong script by Dwight Gallo, steady directing from S. Craig Zahler, and an entertaining and talented supporting cast." - Dave Manning, The Ridgefield Press
