The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 18 Round 5)

We are now at the halfway point of Season 18. Hopefully the second half is a little more fruitful. Here's The Roundup....

3. Production Design
Halfway through Season 18 and we already have some great posters. I just have to marvel at how far the posters have come along over all these seasons. Nice work, studio.

2. Worried Mind

I really liked Worried Mind. Robert Pattinson turned out to be pretty good casting as Clapton. He pulled off the anguished romantic part, but also has enough mystique to to play a rock star. Really, the casting was solid across the board, but what else is new from a Chad Taylor-penned project.

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Walter McKnight's sophomore effort turned out to be a solid one. I thought that mixing in a bit of the TV mythos and characters with the plot of the original film worked well, and the ending is clearly setting up a sequel, which I will be interested in viewing.

3. Profits
I feel like I'm harping on this a lot this season, but it's going to be hard for the studio to finish the season in the black if there are too many more rounds where only one film makes a profit.

2. The Youngest Hart
I had trouble with this film. First, the villainous mother played by Reese Witherspoon was too evil, too insane, too EVERYTHING. It pushed beyond the limits of believability. Although I suppose action as vile as Claudia's make her a reasonable candidate for the Best Villain GRA (and I don't see a front-runner yet...). Then there was the ending. Was that a criminal trial or a civil trial. It didn't make any sense, frankly. All that said though, I think Jacob Jones is a good writer. He's technically proficient and USUALLY writes likable characters, I just think he needs to find more projects that are more worth telling. The Youngest Hart, as a basic plot, could have worked with a little more time spent on revisions to soften some of the more jarring moments. I encourage Jacob to continue writing. This season may not feature his best output, but I still see a lot of potential for him to grow as a writer.

1. Box Office
Midway through Season 18 and LRF is on pace for its worst season box office in its history - by far. The only seemingly sure things left on the schedule for the studio are Green Arrow 3 and Teen Titans, but neither of those seem like the season saving hits that Green Lantern Corps and Namor the Sub-Mariner were last season.
