Reaction: Well, this one avoided losing even more money thanks to the film's low budget - and low marketing budget in accordance. It appears that people were not particularly eager to relive this fairly recent tragedy on the big screen.
"I have to give Director Korine and Writer Conn at least some credit for attempting to turn in a human portrait of the figures behind the true tragic events. Their attempt, however, does not leave much of a mark. It's neither entertaining nor insightful. At the end of the day this is a movie that probably should not have been made as it lacked the careful touch required to make a film about such a tricky and sensitive subject." - Michael Wilmington, Rolling Stone
"Columbine is a film that has nothing working in its favor. The film not only feels exploitative, but it also doesn't appear to know anything about its subject matter. With how little attention to detail there is, writer Alex Conn could have easily written something unrelated to the Columbine massacre rather than drag the families of those involved through something so half-hearted. I see no artistic reason for this film being specifically about the Columbine massacre, only exploitative reasons." - Charles Yost, Oregonian
"Why did the filmmakers choose to make this film? They don't seem particularly committed to telling this story with accuracy. Sometimes us critics complain about true story films feeling like a Wikipedia summary, but that would have been welcome in this case. By the time the end credits rolled, I had no sense of the characters or their glossed over actions." - Dave Manning, The Ridgefield Press
Rated R for language, violence and drug use - all involving minors
