Plot: In the woods outside of Dooling, West Virginia, the mysterious Eve Black (Katherine Waterston) is walking alone when a moth lands on her arm. Dozens more moths appear. She follows the moths toward the light of a trailer in the middle of the forest. The trailer turns out to be a meth lab. Eve sets fire to the lab, resulting in an explosion that kills the two men working inside. She sits down on a log nearby as the sound of sirens approach. When the firetrucks arrive, they call the sheriff's office when they see Eve on the scene. Sheriff Lila Norcross (Elisabeth Moss) is in bed with her husband Clint Norcross (Tobey Maguire) when she gets a call from Deputy Terry Coombs (Jake Johnson), asking her to come down to the crime scene. When Lila arrives at the scene of the explosion, she finds that Terry has handcuffed Eve and put her in the back of his car. He tells Lila that she wanted to talk to the sheriff. Lila walks over to the car and asks Eve if she started the fire. Eve confesses to the crime and asks to be arrested.

Early in the morning Lila takes Eve to the local prison, the Dooling Correctional Institute for Women, to be examined by her husband Clint, who works as there as the chief psychiatrist. Lila privately tells Clint that the woman's behavior weirds her out, and they can't find identify her, but she claims her name is Eve Black. Clint gives his wife a kiss and tells her that he'll learn what he can from the examination and give her an update.

As Lila drives through town, her police radio starts blowing up about several women have been found in a comatose state with some sort of cocoon surrounding their bodies. Meanwhile, Clint is interviewing Eve, but she isn't giving him any information about herself. He then hears a commotion through the prison, as several inmates have been found that morning in the same comatose, cocooned state. Eve smiles throughout the commotion, leading Clint to believe she has something to do with it.

Lila and Clint's son, Jared (Asher Angel), is making out with his girlfriend, Mary Geary (Talitha Bateman), when they are hit with rocks thrown by Eric Blass (Ty Simpkins). Jared yells at him to stop, but Eric just laughs and keeps throwing rocks. Jared and Mary leave the area and head back to her house. They go inside and finds Mary's mother, Elaine Nutting (Judy Greer). Elaine tells them that she just got off an overnight shift at the hospital and is going to sleep, so they need to keep their volume down. Jared asks how Mary how she's doing with her parents having recently finalized their divorce. Mary says that she still loves her father, Frank, but that her mother couldn't handle his temper  and how he would yell about every little thing.

Lila arrives back at the police station, exhausted after not getting any sleep. She falls asleep on a couch in her office. Terry enters her office and finds that Lila, too, has entered a cocoon state. The phones keep on ringing at the station, overwhelming Terry. He calls his friend Frank Geary (Danny McBride), the town's animal control officer, and asks him to come down to the station to help out.

Clint drives home at the end of the day, finding that people have begun looting the local grocery store. He turns on the radio and hears a report about the mysterious illness spreading across town causing sleeping women to become fall into a comatose state and becoming cocooned in a strange material. Clint tries calling his wife, but it goes to voicemail, so he drives over to the police station. As he tries to enter the station, he is aggressively stopped by Frank who demands to know his business. Terry is drinking at his desk and has unplugged all of the station's phones. When he sees Frank grabbing Clint, he tells him to say off the sheriff's husband. Clint asks where his wife is, and Terry simply points to Lila's office. When Clint enters the office, he finds Lila cocooned. Clint tries to pull the material off her, but the material burns his hands.

Lila finds herself in an idyllic version of Dooling's main street. There are no men in sight, but there some of the town's women walking around in a confused state. Lila walks into the police station where she finds Eve Black sitting in her office. Lila asks what is going on, but Eve doesn't acknowledge her.

Clint drives back to the prison, where the inmates are increasingly panicked and demand to know what it going on. One of the inmates, Jeanette Sorley (Melissa George) pleads with Clint to give her some medication to keep her awake so that she won't be the next one sick. Clint goes to see the warden, Janice Coates (Kim Dickens). She eagerly asks if he knows anything more about what's going on than what is on the news. He looks at his still burned hands and tells her that it isn't a good idea to try to remove the cocoons. She tells him she is afraid of it happening to her since it seems to only affect women. He says that if it only affects sleeping women, her only chance is to not fall asleep.

Jared and Mary turn on the news and learn about the illness spreading through town. They check on Elaine, finding her in a cocoon. Mary worries that she will become sick like her mother if she falls asleep and begs Jared to make sure she doesn't fall asleep.

Clint goes to the cell of Eve Black and demands answers. Eve is finally willing to talk. She explains that she has been sent to prove that without women, a society of just men will devolve into war, chaos and evil. She tells Clint that his job is to protect her for a week or so. Clint asks what happens in a week. She tells him that if she remains unharmed by the evil men in town, she will cure all every woman in Dooling. Eve then tells Clint that she is tired. She closes her eyes and quickly falls asleep.

After deputizing his friend Frank, Terry has now also deputized his nephew Eric Blass and a recently fired prison guard named Don Peters (David Arquette), to help maintain order in town. The four officers walk down main street in riot gear, ordering all residents of town to return to their homes.

Clint finds Janice asleep at her desk and realizes that he is now the only left to run the prison - and protect Eve Black from harm. Clint checks on Eve in her cell, finding that she is immune to the illness as she is asleep without any cocoon developing.

In the dreamworld of Dooling, Lila finds Janice and Elaine on main street. They ask her what's going on, and as birds chirp and flowers bloom around them, Lila says that she believes they are now in a version of Dooling without men. Elaine says it is nice, but Lila and Janice quickly remind her that it isn't real. The three women begin looking around town for other survivors. On their search, they find a moth-covered, glowing tree in the exact center of town. The tree wasn't there before, so they suspect that the tree may be involved with what's keeping them there. Elaine suggests they destroy the tree. She pulls out a lighter, but Jeanette Sorley tackles her to stop her from burning the tree. Lila and Janice separate Jeanette and Elaine. Lila tells the others that no good will come from fighting with one another or destroying anything. They need to continue gathering everyone and having them go to town hall until they can figure things out. The group splits up to find other survivors.

Terry reveals to his new deputies that all of this began when Eve Black showed up in town. Frank gets riled up and says that they should go down to the prison and capture Eve. They arm themselves and take a police truck down to the prison. When they arrive, they find that they can't get into the building and Clint won't let them in. Terry fires a shotgun blast at the metal doors of the prison. The slug ricochets off of the metal, and hits Eric in the head, killing him instantly. Terry is in shock. Don tries to do CPR, but Frank pulls him off, saying that CPR isn't going to fix a bullet to the head. Frank then gets into the truck and rams the doors open with the vehicle. Frank and Don walk into the building when they hear a nearby gun blast. They turn back to find that Terry has killed himself out of grief of accidentally killing his nephew Eric. Don says that they should turn back and wait things out, but Frank insists that the answer to what's going in is inside the prison. Don says that he didn't sign up to get killed, and leaves the prison. Frank continues into the building by himself.

Jared falls asleep while watching Mary. When he wakes up she is asleep as well while a cocoon begins to form around her. He burns his hands trying to pull it off. He puts Mary into her bed and leaves the house to see the deserted streets. He calls his father Clint, who tells him to get home immediately. Instead, Jared goes to the police station and finds his mother in her cocoon.

Lila and the others have gathered every survivor they could find in the town hall meeting room. Mary wanders in and is reunited with her mother. The dozens of women turn to Lila and ask her what they should do. She says that they all need to stay calm and not do anything rash. She thinks they should all stay at town hall where they know they are safe.

Hearing the gunshots, Clint tells Eve that he needs to move her to a solitary confinement cell where she will be more safe. As Clint leads Eve through the prison corridors, they run into Frank, who aims his shotgun at Eve. Clint stands in front of Eve, blocking Frank's shot. Frank demands that he hand Eve over to him. Clint asks Frank to leave her alone as her safety is the only thing keeping his wife alive at this point. Eve, however, tells Frank that she can save his family - his wife and daughter who are both now in the dreamworld, but only if he kills her. Frank, unsure of who to believe, puts his gun down and pleads with Eve to bring his wife and daughter back. He admits that he's made mistakes as a husband and a father, but he wants them to be safe. Eve is taken aback by the heartfelt pleas from a seeming brute like Frank. Eve tells Clint and Frank that she cannot force them back, but if the women of Dooling tell her they want to come back, she will make it happen. Clint asks how, and Eve says that she needs to sleep.

All of the women of Dooling are at the town hall in the dreamworld when Eve enters. She tells them that they were brought there to prove that men are inherently violent and should be allowed to die out, that the dreamworld of Dooling around them is a place without crime or violence - like the world should be. Lila tells Eve that they all want to go back home to their families. Eve asks if everyone indeed wants to go back to their world, and they all raise their hand in agreement with Lila. Eve, resigned, snaps her fingers.

All over Dooling, the women of town wake up from their deep slumbers. Eve's sleeping body turns into a swarm of moths that fly out of the prison. Frank arrives at his ex-wife's house. He gives Elaine and his daughter Mary a hug. He tells Elaine that he plans on winning back her trust and love. Janice wakes up and Don asks for a second chance working at the prison. Jared excitedly hugs his mother she awakens from her sleep. Soon after Clint arrives and shares an embrace with his family.
