Reaction: As legendary of a guitarist as Eric Clapton is, it appears that a biopic of his life just wasn't a huge draw at the box office. The film featured a few relatively expensive actors that definitely brought the costs up a bit more than expected on the project, but there's really not much that can be done to avoid that (and who knows if it would have even made as much as it did without those stars).
"It takes some time to get used to the rhythm of the story, but the film is anchored by a dynamite performance from Robert Pattinson as the troubled rock star, along with some impressive and understated supporting performances from the likes of Andrew Garfield and Lily James." - Rick Green, The New Yorker
"Pattinson and Garfield are great as Clapton and Harrison, with their chemistry making you buy their friendship absolutely. In fact, those two are so good together that the film struggles a bit in the scenes where they're apart." - Scott E. Kerr, Chicago Reader
"I was honestly surprised at how much time the filmmakers chose to spend on Clapton's childhood in the film. Robert Pattinson doesn't show up as the Eric Clapton we get for the rest of the film until a quarter of the way through the film, which seems like a long time to wait for the draw of the film to arrive. For me, that definitely negatively affected the flow of the film." - Charles Triano, Los Angeles Times
