In this edition of Interview, Last Resort Films president Phil Dolan sits down for an interview with writer Alex Conn (The Vegan Movie 2: Tariq Goes to Sarah Lawrence, Columbine) to discuss his films this season and his next directorial effort.
PD: Why do you think The Vegan Movie 2 failed to achieve the same success of the first film?
AC: I think the first Vegan Movie was an anomaly. I think it was just a great one off film and it didn't need a sequel.
PD: Not to put you on the defensive, but why did you decide to attempt a film about the Columbine High School massacre?
AC: I decided to do a film on the Columbine massacre because there was no film that was about it in a real way. I thought it could make a good movie and also teach people about Dylan and Eric. It definitely failed though and I'm honestly sorry for the film.
PD: You've referred to your next film, Watch Hill, as your masterpiece. Why such confidence in that particular project?
AC: Watch Hill is just a story that just came together. I wrote the first draft incredibly quickly. I used Tarantino’s technique which us he doesn't know the ending while writing. I tried that technique and the story very quickly came together. I also think from a specifically genre standpoint I think it's a thriller at it's heart but I think there's a lot of heart in the film. I don't know I'm just really proud of it and I think audiences will like it. I also really love the cast in the film and Soderbergh who's a great filmmaker is directing.
PD: Next season you will direct your fourth film for the studio. Without going too much into specifics, can you tell us why you decided to direct that particular script?
AC: The film is called Chris Travis and Juliet. I wrote it alongside Haunted and a little after Watch Hill. I was sick and I just wrote two movies. It's a personal film and that's why I directed it. All of my films I direct are personal even Virgin Suicides. But it's not like any of my other films I directed. It has some genre elements and it's also not a teen film. There's no teenagers in the film actually. That is all I will say.
