John then yells at everyone in the car disrespecting his art and then calls out Jennifer being a fashion designer which is not a real art in his mind. He then yells at Millie (Kaitlyn Dever) their daughter for reading comic books in the car saying it is a distortion of the art of literature.

The family arrives at the house and Millie is texting her friends about how much she hates it. Millie is kind of emo and wears dark nail polish and is very rebellious and when the night falls she sneaks out to go to the beach and smokes weed. There is a lighthouse near and there is a man controlling the lighthouse. At the same time John is in his room writing and texting a girl on Tinder while doing cocaine.

John is going to a read through of a novel he wrote. He meets a woman at the book signing and the two talk, the woman flirts until she whispers something in his ear, John’s face lights up. They head to her house to have sex and do cocaine. Before they have sex John goes to sleep and wakes up later on the street. He then gets an Uber home from a man in a mask who takes him home. John tries to talk to him but he refuses to talk. He gets home at 11pm. Jennifer asks John where he has been and he said that he was invited to an after party at dinner and he is very tired. John heads to bed as a disgruntled Jennifer looks on.

Millie is going to her first day of her new school. She looks at people but no-one seems to pay her any notice. We see a flashback of her in her old school, happy and joking with her friends. Back in the present, she goes through every class being shy and quiet. At the end of the day she meets a boy that she likes named William (Ross Lynch). William is an actor in the school’s theater department. He invites Millie into a meeting and Millie auditions for the high school play after a nervous start she brings the audition home strong and gets the female lead. Millie comes home and tells her parents she got the role of Fantine. Her parents congratulate her and the family look closer then ever.

Jennifer is at a meeting at her office, she notices a man named Peter (Jason Clarke). Peter is a very suave and he invites Jennifer out to drinks even though he sees her wedding ring.

The theater department has their first meeting. The play is Les Miserables. Millie is Fantine which is a smaller part but is the role all the girls in the theater wanted. William has Jean Valjean who is the main character in the story. A group of girls from the theater department call Millie ugly and William defends her and kisses her. Millie blushes at this and also is surprised. The rehearsals start heating up. Millie starts impressing more and more people with her acting ability.

At the same time Jennifer and Peter start having sex in her enclosed office. While having sex, Jennifer and Peter start having conversations and Peter suggests that Jennifer dump John.

The next day Jennifer kicks John out of the house and reveals to the kids that they are getting a divorce. Millie asks why her parents got a divorce and she reveals that he cheated on her. Millie is shocked at this as she can’t believe her father would do such a thing. She hugs her mom and tells her it will be alright.

The next day is the beginning of tech week and Millie is invited to a party after theater. At the party she is pressured by William to try some hallucinogenic drugs. While on hallucinogen, Millie is raped by a guy at the party. William sees this and pulls him off of Millie. William pulls out a knife and stabs him. Millie is freaking out as William is calming her down. He tells her they need to get rid of the body. William and Millie take the body to the beach, pour gasoline on it and set it alight.

The theatre show is on and John, Peter and the entire family come see it. It has a standing ovation in the intermission. Backstage William brings up a plan to kill John. Millie is initially shaken by the idea but goes along with it as she despises him for cheating and will do whatever William says. John is talking with Jennifer and asks if they can talk tonight. Jennifer invites him over for a chat.

Millie, William and Peter meet up at Williams’ house. Peter grabs his mask which is revealed that he is the person that was in the Uber ride with John. Peter looks at William who now has a gun and nods. Millie waits in the car for them and gets ready to go.

They then go to John’s house Peter and William get out of the car and tell Millie to wait there. The two men sneak around the house until they find John. John is shocked to see the man with the mask is here and tries to say something but is stabbed over and over again. Jennifer walks out with two glasses of wine and sees what has happened, she drops the wine and screams. Millie jumps out of the car and looks through the window. Peter tells William to kill her quickly, get her to shut up. He aims the gun at her and pulls the trigger. Peter goes over to Jennifer’s body and hugs her telling her that he is sorry and truly loved her, he just couldn’t go to jail. Millie storms in the house with tears in her eyes, she snatches the gun off of William and shoots William and Peter and proceeds to blow her own brains out.
