Reaction: Baseball films, and really sports films in general, have always struggled at the foreign box office. Unfortunately, this one also struggled at the domestic box office. By featuring fictional leagues and teams, the film also could not depend on MLB fans to show up to see their favorite logos on the big screen.
"Alex Wolff might be the least believable professional sports star in the history of film. The scrawny hipster is never believable as a flame-throwing ace. This casting choice really hurt any chance the film had at credibility, over-shadowing the elements that worked. Plenty of elements worked (namely the writing and direction), but I always kept coming back to how poor of a fit Wolff is in the lead role. That fatal flaw earns the film a mild negative score from myself." - Shawn Moseby, Fresno Bee
"I'm sure many will have issues with how the film portrays America's past-time, and I honestly don't blame them. That said, if you take that away, I found the story well-structured and the characters very likable, with Noah Centineo making for an especially enjoyable foe for the film." - Chris Price, Boston Herald
"Corndog is being marketed as a rom-com, but the romance is not very prominent. Meanwhile it is also a baseball movie with a pretty loosey-goosey approach to the game. So essentially you end up with a sports rom-com, lacking in both genres, that is going to have trouble appealing to those genre fanbases. Even well-crafted films are not going to work if they don't have their audience in mind." - Stephen Bonds, San Francisco Chronicle
Rated PG-13 for language and some sensuality
