Reaction: The new film from director Guillermo del Toro had the studio accountants crossing their fingers while the numbers were coming in. The risky film wasn't a big hit, but it at least managed to turn a small profit.
"While I applaud the effort to build a dynamic world from scratch, I found it hard to remain engaged with the story. Guillermo Del Toro and Jacob Jones once again created an interesting and stylish universe, but there's something about the social commentary metaphor that took me out of the fantasy setting." - Albert Perry, Orange County Register
"The world-building and direction from Guillermo del Toro are very impressive. However, the all the alien political intrigue and allegory felt heavy-handed and overly complex. All the politics of the planet keep us really learning about the characters of the world. If this is meant to be the first of a series, which it seems to be, hopefully the politics are over and we can learn more about the rest of the Kazaria because the politics are probably the least interesting aspect so far." - Glenn Howard, Total Film
"I keep coming back to the same question about Kazaria: Why would I care about the politics of some alien world without caring about the characters first? That's the big flaw in the script of Kazaria. Writer Jacob Jones and director Guillermo del Toro expect us to care about the outcome of an election in a world we don't know, populated by people we haven't been given the chance to care about yet." - Paul Onkean, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Rated PG-13 for some thematic material
