Plot: Alfred (Guy Pearce) woke up on his desk after his boss slam his desk, his boss told him that this is his 4th time to sleep on the job, he tried to give an explanation and his boss shut it down and warn him if he does it one more time he'll get fired and then the boss go away.
Alfred sigh and pinch his arm hoping everything is just a dream but it wasn't. Time goes by and it's time to go home, he called his wife Barbara (Cate Blanchett) that he will be late again.
At home Barbara cried after hearing that Alfred will be late again, it's been 3 months Alfred would not go home and spent his day out side doing his "Job", she's stressed out, she starts asking herself is something wrong with her? Did she do something wrong? What else can she do?. She's been loyal to him whatever he did, she's been patience when everything go down hill, and not going home and probably cheating is the pay for it? She cries her heart out.
Nick (Sunny Suljic) Alfred and Barbara's only son is playing his handphone when Barbara cried, he immediately throws his phone to the side and rush to his mom. He asked her what happened as soon as he arrive but his Barbara just silence, Nick's expression changed, he asked if it was his father but Barbara still doesn't answer, he get up and punch the wall in anger.
He also starts to question, he question his father's decision why did he do this? Are their patience not enough? His foolishness made them crawl in to this mess, massive debt, unfulfilled needs, what else?. He wants many thing as he is a teenager but he also been patience, what else?
Back to Alfred, he's in clothing store buying his wife a new clothes, he hopes she likes it and with a big smile he hop back to the car, the clock is 8 am right now, he hasn't been home, he thought he'll be finish soon and call Barbara but he wasn't able to finish it so he just can't come home.
He arrived and knocked, nobody answered so he open it with his own keys, it's empty the house is empty, he thinks that they might have gone out, so he put the clothes on the table and write a sweet later for his wife and then he showers so he can going back to work.
In the other hand, Barbara and Nick arrived at Barbara's sister's house, she was clearly shocked they arrive at 3 o'clock in the dead night without calling or anything and Barbara just came with cries and Nick besides her.
Her sister tells her to sit and asked what happened, Her sister let them to stay for a couple of days and she told them that she will asked Alfred what the hell is going on.
Nick went to school with his cousin because he stayed in his house last night, his cousin heard the story and tell everyone about it so nick was getting bullied for the Son Of Cheater, Nick prefer to be silence and wear his headphone to block the crap that they said to him.
A couple of day past. Alfred is worried about his family, they haven't went home, his call wasn't answered and he starts to freak out but calms himself for he is now at work and as an insurance agent he has to meet up with a client in a cafe so he needs to calm down.
He waits for a couple of minute, unaware that, his wife and her sister was coincidentally there, the sister was hoping to cheer her sister up but they saw Alfred meet up with a woman and thought he was cheating on her.
Barbara can't hold herself and she ran out, her sister come to Alfred and was surprise that in front of them was a bunch paper about insurance, Alfred was also surprise to see her and immediately asked if she knows where Barbara is and she just smiled and assure him everything is going to be okay, cause she know that everything must be a misunderstanding.
At school, it has been 3 days since the bullying and finally he punch his cousin in the face for a couple of time before the teachers came and separate them, they were being punish and are not allowing to coming back to school for a week.
Nick thought everything will be done but on the way home, his cousin's friend drag him to an alley and beat him, Nick tried to fight back and almost able to pushed back until hid cousin take a knife out and stab him right in the head, everyone was shocked and trembled, Nick falls immediately and his cousin and his friend ran away.
Alfred now meet Barbara in her sister's house and explain everything, he just working harder to pay off the debt and everything, he wants to fulfill what they wanted cause he love them sl much, Barbara can do nothing but say sorry for her negative thoughts.
Their emotional moment was disturbed by their nephew come home with blood on his hand, they were shocked especially his mom, she asked what happened, and is he okay. He tells them that it was not his blood but Nick's.
Nick lays there, motionless his vision is blurring the last thing he can see is a blur vision of his dad running towards him.
