Reaction: As a small drama, this film did have much of a chance for big box office. That said, it did lose a little more money than the studio likes on such a small drama.

"Despite clear designs on being an intricate character study, it never really feels like we know the characters. Their goals and motivations never seem quite clear enough to work and let the audience into the story. The cast does what they can with their roles, but the story and script by Meirad Tako really doesn't allow for much exploration." - Gregory Fletcher, Los Angeles Times-Journal

"This film felt rushed. We don’t really get much in the form of why these events play out. If it were a little longer it would have felt more complete. The payoff of Alfred being there for his son in his (maybe) final moments was earned, however Nick being stabbed by his cousin, that we don’t get much on felt weird. I don’t know, maybe it was just me, but I didn’t really like this film." -Francis McLaughlin, The Guardian

"Hope, Sadness and Anger feels more like an idea for a film than a story that has been fully fleshed out at times. The characters played by Pearce and Blanchett were interesting, even if they acted a little too obtuse for much of the running time. I liked the film enough to recommend it, but I know not everyone will enjoy it." - Frank Estelle, Boca Breeze

Rated R for some violence and thematic material
