Resume: Tye Sheridan

Tye Sheridan is finally making his return to Last Resort Films with him starring in Black Hole, his first film for the studio since Season 8. For this edition of Resume, we will take a look at the filmography of Black Hole star....

Season 4
Home Again
Director: Destin Daniel Cretton
Writer: Chad Taylor

Budget: $26,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $28,869,096
Foreign Box Office: $22,896,404
Total Profit: $6,118,180

The first LRF project for Tye Sheridan was a supporting role in Home Again, which will forever be a trivia answer as Chad Taylor's first film with the studio. In the film, Sheridan played a friend of the one of the main characters, played by Timothee Chalamet. The film performed well with critics and managed to scrape a profit together.

Season 6
Deprogramming
Director: Antonio Campos
Writer: Lon Charles

Budget: $19,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $39,997,252
Foreign Box Office: $25,717,029
Total Profit: $17,859,770

Next up for Sheridan was a co-starring role in Deprogramming, about a young man who is abducted from a cult and deprogrammed by Casey Affleck's character. Tye received rave reviews for his performance, garnering his only GRA nomination (for Best Supporting Actor) for his performance.

Season 7
Ranger
Director: Scott Cooper
Writer: John Malone

Budget: $45,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $66,228,624
Foreign Box Office: $45,723,077
Total Profit: $3,281,229

Just one season later, Tye Sheridan joined John Malone regular Alden Ehrenreich in his western about the Texas Rangers. Sheridan played a country bumpkin who joins the Rangers. The film is still one of the highest grossing westerns produced by the studio.

Season 8
Queen Mary
Director: Eli Roth
Writer: Alex Conn

Budget: $25,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $19,901,855
Foreign Box Office: $24,225,979
Total Profit: -$10,999,968

Next for Sheridan was a leading role in the horror project Queen Mary. The cast was stacked with popular and talented young actors playing a group making a YouTube video about a haunted boat. Even with all the talent involved, Queen Mary ended up a critical and financial flop.

Up Next: After Black Hole, Tye Sheridan's schedule is mostly clear, although he does have one upcoming horror project he is in talks to star in.

Review:
  • Highest Grossing Film: Ranger ($111,951,701)
  • Most Profitable Film: Deprogramming ($17,859,770)
  • Most Awarded Film: Deprogramming (6 nominations)
  • Best Reviewed Film: Deprogramming (Metascore: 82)

Release: The Life After

The Life After
Genre: Sci-Fi/Horror
Director: Robbert Eggers
Writer: Meirad Tako
Producer: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Denzel Washington, Adrien Brody, Alicia Vikander, Whoopi Goodberg

Budget: $32,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $14,006,769
Foreign Box Office: $31,997,382
Total Profit: -$21,866,111

Reaction: After a strong Round 9, this round is off to a rough start. It looks like Denzel Washington's name recognition has not translated to success at LRF so far (more on that in the next Box Office Breakdown).

"Meirad is the ruler of the weird, The Life After is no exception. While not a great film, I can commend Meirad on the crazy, weird angle that he has taken with the sci-fi genre, who would’ve thought humans would be used as plants, food and pets for aliens. A bit choppy and the pacing if well off, but the mind blowing, weirdness of it all almost erases that. Not a great film and not a terrible film, if you’ve enjoyed Meirad’s other ventures into the weird you will enjoy this one." - J. Darrell Ellington, Behind the Camera

"The Life After is more strange than scary and more confusing than unique or original. There are some strong visuals thanks to Meirad Tako's imagination and director Robert Eggers' eye behind the camera, but the plot doesn't make enough sense for the visuals to matter." - George Ryan, Philadelphia Inquirer

"Of the cast, only Adrien Brody seems to understand the strangeness of the story. Denzel Washington feels too stoic, Vikander too blank, and Whoopi was just Whoopi. The casting isn't the only problem though, with the story not making much sense. For most of its running time, it is just strange - but not in an entertaining way. The ending almost makes up for everything before it though. If the first half of the film was more like the second, the filmmakers might have had something fun on their hands." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press

The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 22 Round 9)

There is now just one round and three films left of the roller coaster that has been Season 21. Here's The Roundup....

3. Box Office
After last round's piss-poor box office, the studio is obviously going to be thrilled about this round's outcome. Next round is looking pretty solid as well with the fourth Batman film from APJ finishing off the season.

2. Fantastic Four: Doom
The action was a bit light, but the film was still a fun time at the movies. Kudos to Orlando Bloom's fun villainous performance, which was easily the highlight of the film (probably followed in second place by the introduction of SHIELD to the LRF Marvel Universe through Joe Mazzello's character).

1. Caesar Part II
Was there any other option than putting Caesar Part II as #1 here? It's another nearly perfectly executed epic from Malone and Taylor that resulted in not only stellar reviews but equally stellar box office. I can't wait to see what Chad and John cook up for the conclusion of their trilogy.

3. Hair
Hair was fine overall as an adaptation of a famous musical with a pretty and young cast, but it was far from I've come to expect from writer Lon Charles.

2. Fantastic Four: Doom
Like Hair, F4: Doom was not a bad film. I'm just hoping there is more action for the characters in the future. Since I feel like we've only gotten a couple big action scenes between the two F4 films.

Fantastic Four: Doom
Genre: Action/Superhero/Sci-Fi
Director: Gareth Edwards
Writer: Mark Newton
Based on Marvel Comics characters
Cast: John Krasinski, Sarah Gadon, Jason Segel, Jack Reynor, Orlando Bloom, Sarah Snook, Joe Mazzello, Laura Berlin, Aksel Hennie, Dan Bakkedahl, Robert Patrick

Budget: $180,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $301,387,041
Foreign Box Office: $426,557,476
Total Profit: $234,008,559

Reaction: The first Fantastic Four film was already a hit, and this sequel managed to improve upon the box office numbers a bit in every possible category, so there is certainly nothing to complain about.

"While still lacking in the action department much like the first film, this sequel was at least a lot more fun thanks to the team having their powers throughout and thanks to Orlando Bloom's performance as Doctor Doom. Hopefully an inevitable third film will offer more action and more for its characters to do now that all four heroes and their arch nemesis are all sufficiently set up in the Marvel Universe." - Roger Taggart, Chicago Tribune

"Fantastic Four: Doom is a minor improvement on its predecessor. It has a little bit more action although that could still be improved. Bloom gets to do a lot of scenery-chewing as Doom and Segel works well as the emotional core of the film, but the other cast members get stiffed a bit in the screen time and development departments - especially Reynor's Human Torch, who gets very little to do here. I liked the film, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping for something grander." - Brenton Smalls, Playboy

"Audiences expect big action sequences from superhero films these days, and that is simply something that has been lacking in these Fantastic Four films. Writer Mark Newton showed recently with Ghost Rider that he definitely knows how to write a thrilling action sequence, so I was disappointed that most of the action here felt generic and light-weight." - Cal Crowe, Washington Globe

Rated PG-13 for superhero violence

For this edition of Comic to Film, we will take a look at the cast to the anticipated sequel to The Fantastic Four from Season 16. The latest Marvel Universe production, Fantastic Four: Doom brings back director Gareth Edwards (Halo 5, The Fantastic Four) and writer Mark Newton (Gears of War, Ghost Rider).
