The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 22 Round 6)

In a round with three good films, you better prepare for some nit-picking and creative things to be annoyed by. Here's The Roundup....

3. Gracie
Gracie felt a lot smaller than Roy Horne's usual films, even the small ones like Cecil. That said, it works thanks to the strength of Sydney Sweeney's performance. Despite how heavy the subject matter is, I found myself wanting more and found myself surprisingly invested in the characters.

2. Soundtracks
This season is looking like it will have a lot of contenders for the Best Soundtrack GRA, if for no other reason than the number of soundtracks. Gone are the days of barely having enough eligible films to warrant the award. Not only have there been some real good ones so far (including in this round), but there are bound to be a few more before season's end.

1. Elektra
I really enjoyed Elektra. In fact, I'd put in the top 5 Marvel Universe films so far. It may not quite be to the level as something like Dwight Gallo's Punisher film, but it's pretty close in my book. The casting throughout is spot-on (as usual for a Dwight Gallo-penned film). The action feels fresh and exciting, and unlike the general sanitized violence usually found in superhero tales. Not only does it make for a great Elektra story, but it also provides a solid introduction of Daredevil into the LRF Marvel Universe. I hope Gallo, Snyder and Boutella (and possibly Heughan) all return for another Elektra story.

3. Timothee Chalamet
I'm not a fan of his, but I will admit that Chalamet actually gave one of his better performances in The Betrothed. I must say though that for such a young actor, he is already gathering a spotty box office record (especially within LRF). He's nowhere near Michael B. Jordan territory, but he may want to be careful which projects he picks in the near future (more The Betrothed and Dune, less The Host and Don't Look Up).

2. Box Office
I imagine the studio is thanking their lucky stars they have Batman, Caesar and the Fantastic Four at the end of the season to make the box office more respectable. This round did only okay at the box office, and if the second half of the season matched the first the studio would be on pace for under $5 billion in total box office (which would put it last place in the history of the studio - even worse than Season 18).

1. The Betrothed
The Betrothed is not a "bad" film. But it is certainly more than a little frustrating, because it could have been really good (maybe even borderline great). The film is unnecessarily big, not in terms of scale and grandeur, but in being too long and packed with too many characters that don't move the story forward. At least a handful of characters could have been cut without missing anything and the film would have benefited from it. The ambition from Scorsese and Collins is impressive, but they probably should have reined it in a bit more for the audience's sake.
